Latinos are THE LARGEST group admitted to the UC system for the second year in a row. 😎🎓💪🏽

All nine UC undergrad campuses rank among the nation’s top 40 public universities, and top 100 of all schools.

The University of California system includes: UCLA and UC Berkeley, the #1 and #2 public universities in the nation, followed by UC Santa Barbara at #6, UC Irvine and UC San Diego tied for #8, then UC Davis, UC Riverside, UC Merced, and UC Santa Cruz.

2021 was the most diverse class ever admitted, with Latinos making up 37%, followed by Asian Americans at 34%, white students at 20%, and Black non-Latino students at 5%, according to AP.

Dodgers’ pitcher Joe Kelly swapped his jersey for a mariachi’s jacket… THEN HE WORE IT TO THE WHITE HOUSE. 😎

The jacket belonged to Grover Castro Tiburcio, trumpeter for Los Angeles’ Mariachi Garibaldi, who were invited to play the national anthem at Dodger stadium — as well as provide live music to the players during their warm up.

Larissa Leon spent 163 hours hand-crafting this incredible prom dress entirely from duct tape for the Duck Brand Scholarship Competition.

“The gown was designed to honor my culture, helping me pay homage to my roots,” says Larissa, who lives in Washington and is of Mexican descent.

The high school senior took inspiration from her years as a Folklorico dancer, “wanting her dress to be colorful and full of movement.”

The dress required 47 rolls of duct tape.

Larissa and other finalists are waiting on scholarship winners to be announced next month. One look at this dress, and it’s easy to see there really is no contest.

Cadet Itzel Sinaí Chan Topete has just become the first Mexicana in history to ever graduate from the U.S. Air Force Academy. 🇲🇽

Itzel, a native of Zapopan, Jalisco, graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering, earning a spot on the Dean's and Commandant's Honors List, as well as representing the Academy in national competitions.

“Ensign Topete is an impressive young officer who will be an outstanding leader in the Mexican Navy," said U.S. General Glen D. VanHerck, commander of the North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command.

"Her success is a great example of the importance of promoting leadership opportunities for all, regardless of gender, rank or function.”

She started working in the fields when she was just 12 years old. This Saturday, she walks across the graduation stage.

In junior high, Jennifer Rocha worked overnight planting strawberries in the fields with her parents. Work hard in school mija, they told her, so you won't have to work your whole life in the fields like us.

She did. Jennifer is graduating with a degree in Sociology with an emphasis in Law and Society from UC San Diego. She follows in the footsteps of her older sisters, each of whom has their own higher education degrees (yep, plural).

The first generation Mexican-American decided to take her graduation pictures in the fields where she worked alongside her parents all throughout junior high and high school, honoring their hard work and sacrifice.

"Gracias a mis padres, soy chingona con diploma."

Their pride in her is matched only by her pride in them, and in her roots.

Jennifer hopes her pictures inspire other immigrant families: hard work pays off.

UPDATE: Dress code DOES NOT mention or prohibit flags. 🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽

A student wore a Mexican flag to graduation, so the principal called the police and is refusing to give him his diploma until he "apologizes."

Ever Lopez, a student at Asheboro High School in North Carolina draped the Mexican flag across his shoulders as he walked up to receive his diploma, a nod to his culture and the sacrifices of his parents, both immigrants.

When Ever reached the podium, the principal, Dr. Penny Crooks, tried to take the flag from his shoulders. Ever refused to remove the flag, took his empty diploma holder and walked back to his seat to cheers from the crowd.

According to Ever's cousin, Adolfo, after the ceremony, Principal Crooks not only refused to give Ever his diploma, she called the police to es**rt Ever and his family off the premises.

Crooks told Ever's mother that she would give Ever his diploma if he "apologized" to her.

The school issued a statement to address the incident, saying that Ever violated their dress code, however the graduation dress code was released and DOES NOT mention or prohibit flags.

According to the school's statement, the Mexican flag "diminished" the event by detracting from the "solemnity" and "dignity" of the ceremony.

There are tens of millions of Latinos in this country, immigrants and the children and grandchildren of immigrants, and we are proud of our heritage and of the bravery of our parents and the sacrifices they made for us.

Ever, you have nothing to apologize for. The principal and school district should apologize. Immediately.
