‘Good Christian men, rejoice’ arr. Philip Ledger is a joyful setting, which is full of life and character. The composer regarded this carol as one of his best arrangements. You can hear the piece performed by the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, in Carols from King’s 2023, first broadcast on BBC Two on Christmas Eve at 18.40. Ledger’s stunning carol also featured in A Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols, as well as Carols from King’s, in 2012. Listen: https://bit.ly/3GPTqqz

‘A Spotless Rose’ by Sir Philip Ledger (Encore Publications, 2002) is a beautiful carol which is full of word painting. It has an antiphonal opening and a sense of purity in the music. The choral work will be performed by the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, in A Festival of Nine Lesson & Carols on Christmas Eve 2023. Like the blooming petals of rose, beauty is revealed in the carol when some tight, clustered chords ‘unfold’ note-by-note to reach a key change and complete the transformation. Dedicated to Stephen Cleobury and the Choir at King’s, Ledger’s short piece has been performed six times during the famous Christmas Eve service since 2002. By comparison, Howells’s setting has been given 15 performances in the period from 1929 to 2018. You can read the book, ‘Christmas Eve at King’s: 100 Years of Nine Lessons & Carols’ by Timothy Rogers (ISBN 978-1-5272-4725-3) or listen to a recording of ‘A Spotless Rose’ made by the Choir of St John’s, Cambridge: https://bit.ly/3Rdc54q

Bryan Kelly’s ‘Lest We Forget’ is a compelling orchestral work which takes a musical journey from conflict and unrest to reconciliation and peace. It divides into two short movements: 1. Omens of War: https://bit.ly/466QUGP and 2. Epitaph for Peace: https://bit.ly/3u8FODR. The second movement has been transcribed for organ. All versions are published by Encore Publications.

New Publication: DUET, ARIA, AND FUGHETTA ON ‘BRADFORD’ by Sarah MacDonald for chamber organ (Encore Publications). This piece is a conscious Baroque pastiche. The hymn tune, ‘Bradford’, can be heard clearly through all three movements, and the music provides an excellent voluntary for Tudor Evensongs, when it can be difficult to find a work by a female composer.
