Always remember that there is no liberty that we can summon into existence, whether by force of logic, determination, or will that the powerful will not try to suppress, erode, or remove. All our victories are temporary unless we continue to fight for them. Because there is no point at which the powerful suddenly yield and say 'This is enough.' There is no mark of wealth which, once attained, the wealthy rest and say 'I am satisfied.' So for those of us who are not born to power or wealth, it is not enough to match their logic, determination, or will: we must exceed them in every measure, and never, ever, let up.
To summon into being a better world, sometimes we must imagine a worse one. This is because exploring the limits of human despair offers us the opportunity to propose the conditions in which courage becomes manifest. While those moments may horrify us, they also inspire us--and inspiration is a precious resource. Inspiration, more than hope, is the resource that fuels revolutions. It is our counter to their wealth, their power.
This is why we write. We write because imagination is the wellspring from which inspiration is drawn. We write because our ability to change the world we live in requires it.
