celebrates 10 years!

If you’re not yet familiar with Big Jelly, it’s time to get in the know. When it first opened back in 2014, Big Jelly Studios blazed a trail as Ramsgate’s first fully fledged commercial recording studio. Since then it has welcomed musicians from all over the world and has also worked with a steady stream of local acts including Adrian Sherwood, Black Gold Buffalo and Adam Coney.

In our summer issue we chatted to the owners, Mike Collins and Al Harle, about how they transformed a former Methodist chapel into this much beloved and respected recording studio.

Monkton Nature Reserve is working to bring the next generation closer to nature 🌿

This oasis of calm is just a short drive from Ramsgate. For more than 200 years the site was a chalk quarry, but since becoming a charity in 1982 and gaining Local Nature Reserve status, it is now a destination for nature enthusiasts.

The reserve is dedicated to conservation and education and has recently launched its Conservation Station, a project for schools and the community. For day visitors, the main attraction is the large outdoor space. Woodland trails take visitors through the butterfly meadow (25 species of butterfly have been recorded here) and around the Dragonfly Pond, where you might be able to see a crested newt!

You can read more about Monkton Nature Reserve in our summer issue . Go their website to find out more about upcoming events, including The Dome & Sculpture Trail on 20th July.

There are always opportunities to join this group of artists and makers. The 2025 diary is now open - Contact gallery lead Sarah Gibbon.

Also, on 20th July (12 til 3), there is an opportunity to be one of the first to buy a signed copy of Nick Evans’ upcoming book – A Salute to Margate’s Winter Gardens - and to chat with this popular local author in this much-loved community gallery.

This summer we go underground at the Ramsgate Tunnels.

The Ramsgate Tunnels are a 5.2km semi-circular network dug beneath northern Ramsgate, opened in 1939 and built to shelter up to 60,000 people during WW2.

In our summer issue writer, Lisa Frolova, chats to some of the volunteers at the Tunnels, including Brian Woodland, who was a child during WW2 and has vivid memories of the years of air raid sirens and nights spent in the tunnels. Read the full article to learn more about this fascinating local history and make sure to book a tour with one of the local tour guides.

This summer marks the 10th anniversary of the Tunnels reopening to the public so check their website for lots of exciting upcoming events, including a 1970s disco!

Roll out the red carpet! 🎥🎞️🎬

Ramsgate International Film Festival is back for its eighth year. This six day event invites both local and international filmmakers to showcase their work in venues across Ramsgate and Broadstairs.

This year the newly opened Ramsgate Community Cinema, run by Kent Film Foundation, will act as the central hub for the festival, with daily screenings and events.

In our summer issue we speak to the team behind the festival. Festival Director, Sylvie Bolioli says ‘We are very people-oriented. When independent film-makers manage to make a film, it’s already a big thing, so, when we have them here, we try to treat them as best we can. It’s about supporting the upcoming and aspiring film-makers as much as the established ones’. The RIFF, is a festival with community at its heart and we can’t wait to attend, what is sure to be, an inspiring week of events and screenings. Read the full interview with the RIFF team in our summer issue.

We hope you’ve all been enjoying reading our summer issue! Many of you have said how much you love the illustrated cover, illustrated by local artist Lyndon Hayes. We love it too!

The summer issue features an interview with the celebrated illustrator
,finding out about how his move to Ramsgate has inspired his work.

Lyndon’s illustrations have been featured in many publications, including English Heritage, The Guardian/ Observer, New York Magazine and, recently, on the cover of The Financial Times. He also has a popular YouTube channel that acts as an educational tool to wannabe illustrators.

His new Ramsgate based project, Faded Seaside Glamour, will be showing at Hold, Queen Street in August. In his own words, the works will ‘focus on what the tourists don’t see. I love the period of inactivity over the winter months in seaside towns, where the real and more honest side of the landscape is bare for all to see’. We can’t wait to see this!

Meet the Musician:
Starling ✨

We caught up with Ramsgate-based singer-songwriter, podcaster and mentoring guru before she heads off on her European tour.

Starling moved to Ramsgate in 2020 after finding her dream home with space for a dance studio and to be closer to nature. She counts the late Vivienne Westwood as one of her fans and was invited to sing at Vivienne’s Christmas party! She has written lyrics and provided vocals for Massive Attack and has had one of her songs featured on Love Island.

As well as performing, she is also a mentor for those in the creative industry, helping others to find their self-worth and increase their net worth. Her five year plan? ‘I would like to be a household name, as a brand that represents possibility for creatives and women who have ever doubted themselves, to know they are valuable and they can have what they so deeply want’.

Art, Aperitivo & Gelato

On 25 May, Turner Contemporary reopens with an exhibition dedicated to pioneering artist Ed Clark (1926-2019), uniting paintings and works on paper from the 1940s to 2000s. The exhibition features artworks loaned by prestigious international galleries, many of which have not been seen in the UK before.

Meanwhile, Louie on Sea have teamed up with Audio Gold to host Terraza which consists of late-night sunset sessions on the Gallery’s terrace. Come along for music, cocktails and good vibes every Saturday from 5pm-sunset.

And, if that wasn’t enough, Lulu’s Gelato are bringing you their freshly made Guernsey milk gelato to The Turner Contemporary. Since passing on the baton to Bombo Donuts at The Old Kent Market, Lou & Markus have been busy renovating their new shop, set to open in the Old Town this summer. In the meantime, you can get your fix of their fabulous gelato from Little Lulu, their delightful new gelato bike, which will be on the Terrace from Saturday 25th May and they will be scooping gelato there all summer long.

In our summer issue we go behind the scenes at the new Stage Door Arts Academy.

Behind the shutters of the old WHSmith Heidi Moran and Genevieve Pepper, alongside volunteers, are transforming the space into the new home for the Stage Door Arts Academy.

The academy allows both children and adults, all skills and backgrounds to be part of musical theatre and performance arts productions, from hobbyists to those wanting to pursue a career in theatre.

The transformation of the new space is already well underway. The vast, once-empty stockroom has been miraculously transformed into a speakeasy, with a bar and a small stage for cabaret acts. The ground floor will eventually become the location for the cafe, workshop and large theatre space. The hope is that the new space will entice the whole community to get involved in affordable and welcoming classes, workshops and entertainment.

Exciting times! Follow for more announcements and to find out how you can help.
