Nothing lifts the spirits more than the sound of birdsong in the spring. In our Bird Watch feature, our local wildlife expert Keith Ross writes about the welcome return of swifts at the end of April. ‘Every year I look forward to the return of swifts to Ramsgate. Although similar in shape to swallows and house martins, the swift belongs to a completely different family of bird, and amazingly is more closely related to the hummingbird. Flying swifts appear as black silhouettes, with long, pointed wings and a short forked tail. But they are in fact brown in colour, with a white throat. They arrive in the UK towards the end of April or early May, but spend their winters in Africa, migrating over 3,000 miles twice a year’. Keith also talks about the unfortunate decline of these birds over the past twenty years, with swifts now added to the Red List of birds at risk. Josh Flowers to play at Ramsgate Music Hall

Brilliant, local singer-songwriter Josh Flowers is set to perform a special show at Ramsgate Music Hall this Friday in an event not to be missed. Celebrating the launch of his upcoming album Mellow Drama, his music follows the strangeness of people and the beauty of everyday things. Poetic songs that often feel bittersweet; Flower's soft, lyrically-driven sounds blur the boundaries of human understanding and highlight what it is to feel.
