The National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMΣT) in has long been a beacon for provocative and boundary-pushing art, but their current exhibition series, “What if Women Ruled the World?” takes this ethos to a new level. Until November 2024, the museum is showcasing a cycle of exhibitions exclusively dedicated to women artists or those who identify as female. Among the standout artists featured in Part II of this series is .emmerich whose immersive and sensual work invites viewers into a world of vibrant color and complex identity. For her debut in Greece, Emmerich has created a new large-scale, site-specific mural titled “Epicurean Eden,” which dominates the museum’s ground floor foyer and mezzanine. The installation is a multi-layered masterpiece, consisting of several murals, a large frieze on the balcony of the mezzanine, and monumental columns adorned with Emmerich’s signature imagery.

07/04/2024

For its 26th edition from 4 to 7 April at the Grand Palais Éphémère, the regional and cosmopolitan art fair 2024 was truly in Olympic form. Focused as always on discovery, it welcomed a very select group of exhibitors with a stronger international presence that comprised 136 hand-picked modern and contemporary art galleries from 25 countries. This edition explored two themes: Fragile Utopias. A Focus on the French Scene and Art & Craft, led respectively by guest curators Éric de Chassey and Nicolas Trembley. The Promises sector for young galleries and Solo Show revealed new talents and featured historical figures who deserved to be rediscovered.

136 galleries were selected for the 2024 edition from a total of 291 applicants. With 42 new arrivals compared to 2023, the 2024 selection was marked by the very first participation of several trendsetting European contemporary art galleries: Esther Schipper (Berlin, Paris), Peter Kilchmann (Zurich, Paris), Meessen De Clercq (Brussels), Michel Rein (Paris, Brussels), and Richard Saltoun (London, Rome). They were joined by Poggi, Frank Elbaz, and leading galleries, such as Continua, Lelong & Co, Almine Rech, and Perrotin, who returned that year. 60% of the exhibiting galleries were French, which meant Art Paris could showcase the entire scope of the French gallery ecosystem, from the prominent modern and contemporary art galleries in Paris to galleries across France, while providing support to young galleries. The remaining 40% comprised a selection of foreign galleries that was boosted by the arrival of New York gallery Bienvenu Steinberg & J, Circle Art Agency from Kenya, Etemad from Iran, or London-based Soho R***e. Modern art, which represented 20% of the selection, was characterized by numerous exhibits focusing on surrealism that marked the movement’s 100th anniversary in 2024. First-time exhibitors Antoine Laurentin (Paris, Brussels), Boquet (Paris), and Czech gallery Cermak Eisenkraft provided a breath of fresh air. media partner

The exhibition Steven Shearer: Sleep, Death’s Own Brothertakes as its point of departure Sleep II (2015), a monumental collage made up of thousands of found images—all of them JPEGs sourced online—depicting people asleep. A breathtaking tour de force balancing color, scale, structure, and subject matter, the sprawling mosaic shows a wide variety of somnolent states, from the peaceful and the comedic to the ecstatic and downright morbid. Titled after a line from Hesiod’s eighth-century BC epic poem Theogony (“Harmful Night, veiled in dusky fog, carries in her arms Sleep, Death’s own brother”), the exhibition revolves around this uneasy proximity (“brotherhood”) between death and sleep, a recurring trope in Shearer’s art. Built around the George Economou Collection’s substantial holdings of Steven Shearer’s work in painting and printed matter, Sleep, Death’s Own Brotherproposes an in-depth look at the oeuvre of this Vancouver-based artist from the transgressive thematic perspective of the lifeless body, which is sometimes truly, sometimes only seemingly dead.

While McGlynn’s paintings clearly engage with the language of abstraction, they operate under the assertion that abstraction is an exhausted idiom. McGlynn’s paintings do not proport to find undiscovered territories to stake as their own, rather they function (metaphorically speaking) with the understanding that the entire globe of abstraction has been mapped and assume no new ground lies yet unturned. In this assumption, McGlynn’s paintings shift their aim away from pursuing originality and redirect it to playing withing the idiom of abstraction itself. Formalism frequently charts its course towards reductivism as evident in The Bauhaus or the works of Mondrian and seeks to distill things to their essence. By contrast, McGlynn is not interested in abstraction as a means to an end, he is more interested in abstraction as a common vehicle or container. He invites the resonance of the already known which lies in the familiarity of the form itself. McGlynn seeks commonality in his palette as well, his colors are selected from what he would assert is a shared enculturated experience with color and the possible associative memories

is a multi-talented artist, psychotherapist, and author based in Copenhagen, whose creative expression revolves around one-liners carefully painted on the covers of imaginary self-help books. With his works, he delves into life’s heaviest issues and interweaves biting satire and humor into his book titles. Deckmann’s forte lies in his ability to harness the potency of language, distilling complex emotions, thoughts, and desires into uncomplicated phrases that have a therapeutic impact. Despite oscillating between the hilarious and the profound, the faded colors and vintage texture of the 70s self-help guides that inspired his work take readers on an introspective journey. Johan Deckmann’s art is in fact a powerful meditation on the nature of existence and the ways in which we navigate the complexities of the human experience. His pieces blend text and image to encourage us to ponder the meaning of life, the power of language, and the intricacies of the human psyche. By engaging with his art, we are reminded to cultivate mindfulness, self-reflection, and self-awareness in our pursuit of a more meaningful and fulfilling life. Deckmann’s art is much more than just a collection of clever phrases on vintage book covers, it is a philosophical exploration of the human condition and the ways in which we make sense of the world around us. Through his art, Deckmann invites us to reflect on the meaning of life, the nature of existence, and the role of language in shaping our perceptions of reality.

A new series of large scale sculptures by titled ‘Seven Sins’ will be presented at the in / For this body of work Bessems translated the seven deadly sins that originate from Christian theology into seven respective sculptures that are complimented by sound fragments, drawings and performances. As with previous sculptures, Bessems explores the magnitude and intensity of experiencing things in our inner lives. With this particular exhibition we see how his larger than live figures grapple with pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and sloth. 2023 years after the world’s most famous crucifixion, these vices still overshadow the more secular phase of our civilization. Like a present-day delegate of Hyronymus Bosch, Bessems aestheticises our tendency towards depravity and illicit behaviour.

solo exhibition Alabanzas (to Praise) will open tomorrow 7th Feb at in corresponding with . The exhibition includes a selection of pictorial and sculptural pieces, along with his most recent work; an assemblage of 8 sacks and 3 golden spheres presented in the final gallery of Galeria Hilario Galguera. Alabanzas brings to conversation the essence of our human condition; recognizing our terrestrial bond and at the same time, acknowledging a sacred part of us. The artworks present an energy of their own, a gravitational force that communicates with the viewer, evoking the unbreakable bond we have with our environment. The journey through the exhibition begins with an organic atmosphere, worshiping and paying tribute to nature, while the golden pieces stand out, acknowledging the spirituality that has accompanied us since ancient times, in a quasi-religious manifestation.

More than seventy years after the creation of the first pieces that open the exhibition , Warhol's works still meet the public's taste and favor, proving themselves to be often topical and capable of conveying immediate visual messages about today's society.
The Milan exhibition aims to document this compelling journey: from objects symbolic of mass consumerism, to portraits of the 1960s star system;
from the Ladies & Gentlemen series of the 1970s dedicated to drag queens, transvestites, symbols of marginalization par excellence and considered on par with stars such as Marilyn, to the 1980s in which his relationship with the sacred became predominant: a practicing Catholic, he had actually been pervaded by it all his life.

For more than two decades, work has been characterized by his distinctive capture of emotion, and use of focus and color, so that poetic sensuality seeps through his work. He moved into film after Wong Kar-wai asked him to join the crew in Argentina in 1997 during the filming of Happy Together, starring Leslie Cheung and Tony Leung. Happy Together not only earned Wong the Best Director award at the 50th Cannes Film Festival, but also put Shya in the spotlight. He is a Master when it comes to capturing or amplifying particular human emotions and atmospheres. He pictures the tactile tension that exists between lovers: togetherness, intimacy or the hint of the erotic about to unfold. Or he frames the extreme opposite: the deep longing for love and connection, loneliness and isolation. Either way, there often is a sense of time being suspended. The Hong Kong-born photographer and director talks about his latest exhibitions, his newly launched NFT project as well as his evolutions within both film and photography.

A recurring question underscores the multifaceted practice of Arthur Jafa: how can visual media and objects transmit the equivalent power, beauty, and alienation that is embedded within Black music in the United States. An investigation also recalled by the title of the exhibition, RHAMESJAFACOSEYJAFADRAYTON, which mentions the names of three electric guitar players: Arthur Rhames (1957-1989), Pete Cosey (1943-2012), Ronny Drayton (1953-2020).
\
Arthur Jafa's dynamic practice comprises films, artefacts, and happenings, which tackle Black culture and experience in the US with unprecedented intensity and complexity. With a career spanning three decades, his multidisciplinary works challenge and question prevailing cultural assumptions about identity and race through his immersive and experimental cinematic experiences.
RHAMESJAFACOSEYJAFADRAYTON focuses on Arthur Jafa's latest video work AGHDRA (2021). AGHDRA (85 min.) wraps the visitor in computer-generated imagery of opulent and mesmerizing black waves, which evolve constantly under an eternal sunset. A state-of-the-art sound system makes it possible to not only hear the immersive installation's sound, but to experience it physically through vibrations. The sound simultaneously supports and interrupts this stream of consciousness viewer response. Lyrics from mostly Black popular songs like Love don't live here, live here no more (Rose Royce, Love don't live here anymore, 1978) amplify an evoked apocalyptic scenario. Demanding multisensory engagement, AGHDRA is contextualized through a series of wallpapers and prints, reflecting Arthur Jafa's ongoing research into Blackness.

Towards the End of an Astonishing Beauty: An Elegy to Sag Harbor, and Thus America at New York / Since the 1980s, Fischl has produced narratives that speak to the façade of happiness latent within the middle-class American dream and the masks one must wear to survive in contemporary society. Now, these guises take center stage as Fischl explores costumes as a site of self-projection and what these choices of dress reveal about our present moment. The exhibition will feature seven new paintings by the artist. In this new body of work, the annual Halloween parade in Fischl’s home of Sag Harbor, known as the “Ragamuffin Parade,” sets the scene for explorations into themes of exhaustion, isolation, disappointment, and passivity.
On view until October 29, 2022

Promised Land / third solo show with Los Angeles-based artist In this show, Martinez considers his life and his city at an inflection point, himself a new father looking to the future and pondering how his family will fit into the changing landscape of Los Angeles, while at the same time reflecting on the city as it was when he was a child growing up in Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley. The show is populated with a prodigious array of new large-scale abstracted landscape paintings, accented by a neon on Plexiglas sign piece – the works collectively meditating on the passage of time and its impact on the lived environment, and by consequence its impact on communities of people.

The late , a German duo who worked together taking photographs of semi-antiquated industrial structures, ranging from water towers to grain elevators to chemical factories, is now the focus of a major retrospective at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art Their black-and-white photographs, as somber as the fabrications they were capturing on film, depict the moment when modernist industrial types would fall prey to a new way of thinking and making. These pieces, often repeated in similar examples photogra[hed in different places, were arranged in impartial grids of imagery. Called “typologies” by the artists, the images can relate closely to each other as a group, but inevitably, differences exist and create variations that both make use of the type of structure they belong to and the variances within the series.

redefines the traditional practice of weaving, experimenting with intricate new techniques while exploring the medium’s potential for self-expression. Through the spectrum of works originating from the loom, Jung investigates the way people continuously negotiate space within and between themselves. Jung tests the limitations of the traditional grid format, breaking the convention and in this process giving the works an almost kinetic potential. Although fixed, Jung’s forms are never static as their voids and translucencies encourage optical movement through and around them.

works with a number of materials from lead, clay and water to stone. Using graphite frottages from stones and pavements and engraved volcanic rocks from El Pedregal, her paintings are abstract topographies and mappings. Stone is a fundamental material in her practice; linked to memory and durability, it can also be transformed and eroded. The crosshatch patterns in her paintings derive from the lines made in stone cutting, emphasising the transformation of stone from raw material to art object. Described as ‘grayscale tone poems’, Krauze alters and arranges stones to make miniature landscapes, complete in themselves but still referencing their origins.

On the occasion of recent show at in - Claire Atherton, representative of the Fondation Chantal Akerman, long-time collaborator and film editor of discussed with our the filmmaker’s artistic vocabulary and the ways she so masterfully achieved to engage the viewer with her stories and her perception of reality.
/
The distinctiveness of the visual language of Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman is very well-known to everyone who has already been acquainted with her video works. The uniqueness and individuality of her narratives on a par with her special connection with space, time, identity and memory unfold an exceptional and rare cinematic style. Investigating the use of space and its properties through the creation of installations, Akerman succeeded in constantly evolving her material, rediscovering and transforming different elements of it. Two video installations –From the Other Side (2002) and Je tu il elle, l’installation (2007)– have been recently presented at Marian Goodman Gallery in Paris (“Chantal Akerman, From the Other Side” 9 December 2021 – 5 February 2022) + two rare screenings –Je tu il elle (1974) and De l’Autre Côté (2002)– at the cinema Luminor – Hôtel de Ville in Paris coinciding with the gallery show.
