After the Pause After the Pause is a literary journal featuring poetry and flash fiction from diverse, fresh voices. The pause is what life throws at us.

After the Pause is an online literary journal, based in the Midwest and published quarterly, that features poetry and flash fiction. The magazine is named thus because we feel that art and writing are things that are born from life experience: the terrible, the traumatic, the happy, the wondrous. From the worst tragedy to the most blissful joy, we think art is an incredible byproduct of everything

that happens. Art is what follows the pause. For true life to begin, pauses must occur: shifts in the balance, happenings that throw kinks into the cogs. We believe that everyone has a voice worthy of being heard and everyone has something worth saying. We welcome diversity of every variety from all cultures, backgrounds, ages, beliefs, opinions, etc. Our mission is truth and beauty and the way those concepts develop each other as they intertwine. We want freshness, engagement, vitality. We want words and stories that are real, gritty, outlandish, linguistically beautiful, meaningful, etc. Above all we want things that provoke thought. Honestly, we just welcome words because we think there are voices yet to be discovered and old voices already discovered who we have yet to learn more about. We want work from brand new writers to long time veterans and anyone in between. We love ideas and invention, taking risks with form, being experimental. We especially love short, punchy poems. We are excited to read your work in all its raw zest and enchantment. Hit us up with any questions, comments, concerns, and submissions here: [email protected]

ANNOUNCEMENT: After the Pause will publish one final issue in March 2022 and then will be shutting down. The submission deadline for our final issue is January 31st at midnight EST. Anything received after the deadline will not be considered for publication.

This was a terribly difficult decision as I always hoped to run the journal indefinitely. But it’s always been a one-man show and I just can’t give it the time and attention it deserves anymore. Calling it quits before the journal’s quality suffers seems the best option left right now.

Through the journal’s eight years of existence and 25+ quarterly issues, I’m incredibly proud of the work we have published. Few things in life have been as impactful as the authors I’ve met along the way.

It’s crazy to think of everything that’s occurred since I launched After the Pause in 2014. Since that first issue, I graduated college, moved to Minnesota then back to Indiana, went to grad school, switched careers, got married, bought a first home, got a puppy.

I published a few things of my own too in those past eight years. All to say the journal is an inextricable part of my life. The kind of thing that is a pure joy to look back on. A privilege every step of the way.

Rest assured the site will remain live along with all the brilliant work in our past issues. Those issues will be archived on our site as long as the internet exists. And who knows, maybe After the Pause will someday publish again. I won’t rule it out entirely.

But for now, send in your best work by January 31st. Our final issue is going to be something special. And again, thank you to
everyone who has played a role in After the Pause’s success. The journal would be nothing without the fantastic work that hundreds of authors trusted me with over the years. You made this whole thing special.
