On today's release, I thought I'd share some thoughts about this EP, and what's to come.
"Above" is the first official release by Etherine since 2003’s release "Gleam". After that release, I focused on other material that fluctuated through different moods and spaces but never quite came back to what Etherine was meant to be.
I started working on new material in 2009-2010 after the release of the album "When I Fall" by my project The Wretch . That album saw that project take a turn towards a more hybrid rock/electronic mood that was an angrier sibling of various demos I had done for Etherine but never did anything with. After that album was completed, I began writing things that clearly were pointing back to Etherine. That’s where "Steel" happened.
"Steel" was the first real AHA moment for me in the evolution of the project, but it proved difficult to follow up. At that point my job and my life made a move to New Jersey necessary and a studio shift happened as well. Weehawken, NJ would see one song written - "Eclipse".
And then musical life went on hold. We relocated further into the wilds of New Jersey, and I set to work learning how to be a father. To this day, that’s my proudest accomplishment. But as a husband, and a father, a rich emotional and creative life is essential to my being, and I fought to find the balance again.
In 2018 after multiple iterations of studio arrangements, I found a workflow that really worked for me. And It’s been bearing fruit - "Above" and "Moment" were completely done in my new studio in the last 6 months, with limited work in an actual computer. Traditional hardware synthesis, arrangement, and live improvisation led to these songs, and finessed to finality in software. The hybrid approach I’d been longing to build finally made sense.
"Remembering" is the one outlier, as that was a series of field recordings of piano improvisations done on my wife’s family heirloom piano in our living room. Recorded, brought in and arranged on the computer and presented here, it’s the rawest of them all.
What’s to come? Another EP is coming this summer - with a similar plot. Old songs telling the same tale of movement from many views of my life. New songs with new inspirations and collaborations. Moods and atmospheres and melodies that I love spending time in, and am happy to share with the world.
