Considerado um dos primeiros discos independentes gravados no Brasil, Satwa (1973) é um símbolo da contracultura dos anos 70, muito pouco conhecido na época, mas aclamado décadas depois de seu lançamento. Fruto da parceria entre Lula Cortês e Lailson de Holanda, dois pernambucanos que intuitivamente misturaram a sonoridade nordestina e oriental, compondo um disco totalmente instrumental com a presença de um tricórdio marroquino, recém adquirido por Lula (e que muito tempo depois descobriram tratar-se de um gimbri) e a viola de 12 cordas brasileira, tocada por Lailson. Gravado durante 10 dias nos Estúdios da Rozenblit, em Recife, o álbum é resultado de constantes improvisações, marcadas por uma espontaneidade ímpar e ressaltando no título das faixas as influências e rebeldia em pleno auge da ditadura militar.
Emendando uma música na outra, a dupla inovou ao experimentar timbres distintos e criar com naturalidade o que mais tarde ficou conhecido como folk psicodélico brasileiro. Esse disco foi precursor de um importante movimento da música pernambucana, que seguiu com o álbum No Sub Reino dos Metazoários, de Marconi Notaro, e com o primeiro lançamento da banda Ave Sangria. Mas foi em 1975 que essas inspirações tiveram seu auge com o icônico disco duplo Paêbiru, parceria de Lula com o paraibano Zé Ramalho. Na década de 80, Lula Cortês ainda completou uma trilogia de parcerias com o álbum Bom Shankar Bolenajh (1988), dessa vez com Jarbas Mariz, em mais um trabalho totalmente instrumental.
