ICAS is bringing attention to the murder of animal rights activist Mike Hill as part of our Global Day of Remembrance campaign*

Another Global Day of Remembrance from the Institute for Critical Animal Studies. The tragic story of animal rights activist Mike Hill, just 18 years old when he died, being deliberately run over and killed by personnel from the animal exploitation industry who was NEVER charged despite committing MURDER is not an isolated incident. Other examples of these types of cases include animal rights activists Jill Phipps and Regan Russell, the latter of whom was only killed just last summer.

Veganism is sometimes accused of being ableist by pointing to the fact that 'not everyone can be vegan, due to disability or chronic diseases'.
This holds a misunderstanding of the very definition of veganisme, which includes the phrase 'as far as is possible and practicable'.

By calling veganism ableist, they are also erasing the existence of disabled vegans and chronically ill vegans.
Yes, we exist. And we are doing our best to avoid the use and abuse of animals, as far as is possible and practicable in our lives. And that is possible to a very large extent.

Is it possible for us to stop using ableist slurs like “ret*rd”, “stupid” and “dumb”? We stop using them. Is it possible to adopt a plant-based diet as to not violate nonhuman autonomy? We do it. It’s especially not an excuse to tokenise BIPOC (who are more likely to be vegan in the United States), disabled human people (lots of disabled vegans who want other humans to stop tokenising them), poor people (poor vegans are angry when they see themselves used as speciesist “hot-takes”), homeless people (vegan homeless folks are literally too busy being homeless to tell speciesists to be quiet), and ironically, lions (another marginalised group speciesists tokenise who must eat other animals’ flesh, and are facing extinction).⁣

There is no ethical exploitation of anyone’s body under any system.

“Ampun Bang Jago” = “Sorry, bro arrogant”, in Indonesian.

This is the video of the Indonesian rap Khing Hnin Wai is dancing to while the Myanmar coup is seemingly taking place in the background. Coincidentally this track is a political satire against oppression, arrogant bros, cops and military, and was already a viral ‘riot song’ after the Omnibus Law protests in Indonesia in 2020.

The track and chorus is: ‘Ampun Bang Jago’ = ‘Sorry, bro arrogant’.

“When you are debating with a jackass, meet a deadlock and then stop the argument by saying “Ampun Bang Jago” = Sorry, Bro Arrogant. (I am not as skilled as you are) . It shows you are fed up.”

The most known text associated with the terms - which is available below for free download as a PDF or for Kindle - is probably Xenofeminism by Helen Hester of the Laboria Cuboniks collective. Here's is some info on the short and superb book!
