Today we had very intense day with Pitching of 20 new documentary film projects by Georgian, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Finish students from both BA and MA levels. Diversity of topics and fascinating characters promise a unique insight into many underrepresented themes with a creative angle. Lots of thoughtful discussions with the help of our Jury members.

Filmmaker in Focus:


Today our focus is on the incredible filmmaker Maka Gogaladze! Since 2010, Maka has been working as a photographer. In 2014-2016, Gogaladze received a master’s degree in Multimedia Journalism and Media Management from the Caucasus School of Journalism and Media Management at the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs (GIPA), where she became deeply interested in documentaries. In 2016 Gogaladze co-founded FORMO Production Company and started working on her first long-term documentary project: Ever Since I Know Myself.

Q: Tell us a bit about yourself - all the basics!
A: I was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, USSR in 1983 as a daughter of a teacher of Mathematics and Engineer, more importantly as a sister of Irma. Back then my parents and grandparents used to go to work and try their best to build a house where I would have a room of my own. Then something unexpected happened – the Soviet Union collapsed and in the 90's the hardest times of the late history of Georgia started. Major part of my childhood I was waiting for our piece of bread (there was nationwide shortages of food) in the queue in front of the bread-shop, for electricity to do the homework and for summer holidays to take a slow train to Surami, countryside where my grandparents lived Starting to build my own future, I applied at the Tbilisi State Medical University and became a pediatrician. Once I had a degree and was ready to start my own room, I quitted my first profession and started practicing photography.

Q: How did you become interested in film?
A: In 2016 I completed a master’s degree in Multimedia Journalism and Media Management from the Caucasus School of Journalism and Media Management at the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs (GIPA), where I became deeply interested in documentaries. Photography for me is the process of following and grabbing the moment. As for filmmaking, it provides the time and space for reflection in process. Apparently it was my essential need, since I am not a goal-driven one.

Q: What advice would you give to your younger self?
A: You are born alone, you die alone. And it’s okay!

Apply for the CinéDOC-Tbilisi Online Film Mentoring & Support Programme 2023!

We are glad to announce that the CinéDOC-Tbilisi Film Mentoring Programme will again include a Film Support Programme designed especially for films with socially relevant topics. Documentary filmmakers from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan may apply.

The Film Mentoring Programme gives you the chance to work on your project with mentors from the European documentary film industry.

The Film Support Programme awards financial support for:

Up to 12 selected documentary film projects that cover socially relevant topics and inspire debates on different forms of civic engagement

📍 Awards of up to EUR 10 000 per project for a documentary film longer than 45 minutes

📍 Awards of up to EUR 5000 for a documentary shorter than 45 minutes

🗒The program starts on the 31 of March (tbc) and lasts until the end of June 2023

🔴Deadline of applications: 27 February 2023 – 21:00 o’clock / Tbilisi time

Members of newly established documentary film associations, such as DOCA · Documentary Association Georgia and «QazDoc» Documentary Creators Public Association (Kazakhstan) are encouraged to apply!

Pitching of fascinating stories by GIPA's Georgian, Armenian, Azerbaijani, German, Dutch and Finish students was later followed by screening of interactive projects and documentary films focused on Gender, Identity and Borders. Winners of Documentary Pitch, Interactive Projects & Documentary Film competitions will be revealed on Sunday at 19:00 at Frontline Georgia. We thank all the filmmakers, journalists and panel for their inspiring work.
