Modern In Denver Modern In Denver is Colorado's leading design magazine celebrating commercial and residential archite Meet Modern In Denver Magazine. And just what is modern?

We celebrate modern design and living in Denver, Colorado. But we balk at the walls of limitation that a title constructs! We’re much more than a magazine. MID is also a platform for discussing and exploring outside-the-box ways of living that are inspired by modern design and practices. Well, we heard an ugly rumor that modern design connotes a cold and sterile environment. That particular brand

of modern certainly may exist. But we’re friends with the type that greets you at the door with your house slippers and an honest mix of materials and methods. Modern can be comfortable, and we’re here to show you how. We think good design can be an integral part of real life right here in Denver. In fact, we’ve seen it. And we want to tell you about it. We find it important to connect the designs we feature to the particulars of our place, our community, and the people in it. This makes it real, practical and possible for great modern design to become part of your life. We know you’re a discerning crowd. That’s why we’re committed to printing more than just pretty pictures. We bring you interesting, intelligent articles crammed full of qualified resources. We show you how real people create and live in honest-to-goodness modern places around the corner and maybe even right next door. We spotlight architects, designers, artists and entrepreneurs right here in our own backyard. But it’s a big planet! MID also introduces our local audience to a worldview of design, architecture and lifestyle that we hope will influence and enrich our evolving community. We profile international designs and designers for your inspiration. We report on the latest products and methods introduced at trade shows around the world. And the best part? You can join, contribute, get involved, network, learn, create, and discuss. It’s a platform. It’s a new community. It’s MODERN IN DENVER. ENJOY.

Amid a grove of mature Engelmann spruce trees in the Colorado Rockies, a modern alpine residence designed by Basalt-based CCY Architects reveals itself as a series of cohesive structures that both celebrate and preserve the land. The site–a remote stretch of rugged wilderness with stunning views of the San Juan Mountains–served as a base camp for a Bay Area family for more than two decades before they embarked on a build.

CCY Architects' sensitive design of a new mixed-use development in the Telluride Historic District brings affordable market-rate housing together with ground-level commercial space—all anchored by the Transfer Warehouse, a 120-year-old structure designated for use as an arts center. The development responds to surrounding structures, using brick and cedar to align with Telluride’s historic facades, as well as modern details and finishes that give a contemporary presence.
This project was given an Award of Merit at this year's Design + Honor Awards.

From the street, John and Shari Matusiak’s home looks like a cube—a sugar cube, some in the neighborhood have said. Metal and stucco in subdued shades adorn the exterior, while a cedar-clad strip that incorporates the front door and a timber privacy fence add thoughtful pops of warmth. “We thought we were living in Miami or Palm Springs when we designed this,” John jokes. He isn’t wrong, the home does look like it belongs to a famed modern enclave. Yet it belongs to Denver’s Bonnie Brae neighborhood. “One thing we often ask ourselves as architects is, ‘How do you make a place?’” says Tomecek Studio Architecture principal Brad Tomecek, who was immediately intrigued by a Denver family’s request for a modest refuge near the peak of Echo Mountain. “With just the smallest intervention, you can create meaning.” Check out our fall cover story to learn more about how Tomecek designers took inspiration from this site, where a rocky hogback emerges from the earth with an 80-foot drop to one side.

Kari Whitman’s interior design clients often get more than they ask for. “If somebody doesn’t have an affinity for the earth the way I do, it doesn’t matter,” Whitman says. “Everything in their house will be very sustainable and earth friendly.” Her work on an ADU in Boulder exemplifies this approach. The brief was “modern cabin”—relaxed, not overdone, and emphasizing the wooded surroundings. The result is a multi sensory retreat in the very best way, with recycled IndoTeak flooring used in a herringbone pattern on both the walls and ceiling, enveloping guests in the beauty of the natural material and its signature aroma. It’s peak aspen season in the Rockies, and we can’t imagine a better place to relish in the golden hues than this sensitively restored landscape by Design Workshop. Principal landscape architect Mike Albert says of the project at the base of Hayden Mountain: “When we embark on a design project in a wild setting, we’re not focusing on what to add but how to edit what’s already there. In our opinion, the forest was this site’s number one asset.” 🍁🍂 Read more in our fall issue.

Congratulations to Sopher Sparn Architects for the AIA Colorado Award of Excellence in Sustainability for their Great Dharma Chan Monastery in Boulder. The centerpiece of the 25,000-square-foot Buddhist temple and monastery is the Dharma building, housing a meditation hall, education space, and dining center. Exposed wood beams and a CLT deck are meant to evoke a forest canopy under which practitioners of Chan Buddhism can meditate, attend classes, and share meals together, while the roof structure of the Great Hall appears to float over a band of clerestory windows supported by hybrid steel and wood columns located on the exterior of the building. Outside, the Zen Garden welcomes visitors with a moongate, a circular opening that acts as a pedestrian passageway that leads from the residences to the meditation wall.

NEW ISSUE OUT! We Coloradans not only desire a connection to nature, we prioritize it. It’s the primary reason why many of us have decided to call the Rocky Mountains home. Nature enhances concentration, creativity, and lifts our spirits. In our fall issue, we take a look at a number of nature-conscious design projects, from everyday product designs to architectural interventions that seek to sensitively coexist with the places they’re built, like our cover story about a mountain refuge by Tomecek Studio Architecture.

Find your copy of the magazine in your mailbox or on newsstands, or head to our website to read online. Happy fall! 🍂🍁

Passive at 8,000 feet! Nestled into a rocky hillside in Nederland, this Passivehouse designed by Shape Architecture is PHIUS certified to withstand its location’s alpine conditions, keeping cool in summer and nice and toasty in winter. As Shape explains, half of the home is oriented to the south to optimize passive solar gain, while the primary suite and living room are angled 45 degrees to the west to capture the dramatic views. With a thickly insulated roof and walls and triple-pane, high-performance windows (to name just a few of its Passivehouse systems), this home is a year-round sanctuary of calm.

“When I’m working for myself, I try out new ideas, take risks, and play,” says interior architect Julie Doman, who recently completed a full renovation of a 1950s ranch house for her and her family in the Hilltop neighborhood. “I wanted everything to be comfortable, welcoming, and warm.” Once half-residence, half-doctor's office, the home is now a cohesive expression of sophistication and ease. “The first thing we noticed about this lot was that it sat on a precipice,” says principal Mike Piché, describing the site where Studio B Architecture + Interiors designed a cantilevered glass home and gabled barn in rural Salida. The riverside residence was designed for empty-nesters looking for a serene space that would quietly embed them in the environment, upholding Salida’s natural beauty without interrupting it. When it came time to choose a view from the breathtaking vistas in every direction, the answer for Studio B was simple: Don’t.

Designed by Studio Gang and managed by Aparium Hotel Group, Populus’s architecture is inspired by the Aspen tree (or Populus Tremuloides), a fitting motif for a building whose carbon footprint will be offset through forest and agricultural collaborations that will sequester more carbon than the building emits. Real estate developer Urban Villages is pleased to announce that Populus, the first carbon positive hotel in the United States, has topped out—a milestone that marks the completion of vertical structure for the 13-story, 265-room hotel that will open in Denver in spring 2024.

Elevate By Design was inspired by the Parker Hotel in Palm Springs when they set out to design a xeriscape for a property in Denver’s Hilltop neighborhood. They mulched with crushed granite and placed red yucca, rabbitbrush, and blue oat grass to imbue a California hillside vibe. “This is so unlike anything else in the neighborhood and garnered a lot of attention,” says principal Paul Wrona.

Tucked in a secluded court and perched high above the golf course in Cherry Creek’s DCC neighborhood, a muted 1984 contemporary home was in desperate need of an update, but the location was unmatched. After talking with several firms, the new owners selected Boulder-based HMH Architecture + Interiors (AIA CO Firm of the Year) to transform the drab dwelling into an expansive-view sanctuary. An open floor plan with sight lines from the outdoor patio through the main communal spaces allows family and guests to congregate and enjoy spectacular views from any room. A private panorama indeed.

Denver is the birthplace of the xeriscape, at least in name. In the 1980s, the Denver Water Board created the term--a neologism of “xeric,” Greek for dry, and “landscape”--as a way to encourage city residents to use less water in their yards by choosing plants that would easily thrive in the region’s natural aridity and increasingly severe drought cycles. “It just always felt right to us,” says Ransom Beegles, principal at R Design Landscape Architecture. “We were doing suburban projects in northern Colorado and driving through beautiful preserved prairie to get to job sites. Once we arrived, we’d meet with clients who were paying a lot of money irrigating unused lawn, so we started asking ourselves: Why are we doing this?”

When’s the last time you noticed a light switch? Chances are you don’t remember—but if it was one from Buster + Punch, you wouldn’t forget. With their lines of smoked bronze toggles, brass skull furniture k***s, and other home fixtures and furnishings, it’s no wonder the London-based interior products brand proudly proclaims “We are metal” on their product homepage. We recently caught up with founder Massimo Buster Minale to talk about his background as an architect and motorbike builder, the decision to start Buster + Punch in his Shoreditch garage, and what keeps the company freshly inspired ten years into operation.
