Shoot Benchrest Like a World Champion
Top Five Benchrest Tips and Tricks for Equipment Set-up

1. A towel and leather snake filled with sand will keep ejected brass from rolling off the bench. When brass falls onto the concrete under the bench it always seems to land mouth-side down and peens over the opening. And if you’re counting your empty shells at the end of the match you can go crazy trying to find that lost piece, and it may even drive you to put a 6th shot on your record because of it!
2. Since 2005 I’ve shot benchrest with a co-axial front rest. The joystick was a gamechanger for me because I struggled squeezing the rear bag for windage and elevation.
3. Line up your stock so it’s square in the front bag. You want the rifle to track straight in the bags. Mark the position of your front rest on the concrete bench for easy set-up throughout the day. Markers fade from an outdoor bench top so the range owner won’t hate you for it (they will hunt you down for hammering divots in the concrete, so use superfeet to keep the rest from sliding around). Pro tip – wipe the dust off the bench and superfeet with a damp towel and the rest will stick even better to the bench top.
4. Make sure the stock doesn’t ride up on the front stop, and make sure the front stop is tight (check it every so often – bolts loosen over time). Really make sure the stop never touches the barrel. That, or the stock riding on the metal edge of the front rest, will result in vertical flyers so wild you won’t believe your own eyes. Can happen on a range where you're shooting uphill. Been there, not fun.
5. Use an adjustable ammo caddy to stage your shells close to the rifle action’s loading port. This will let you focus on wind conditions rather than groping for cartridges. Ammo can be set into the caddy base up or down, your preference. But don’t change your shooting position just to reach for your shells in a loading block that always seems to be slightly out of reach on the bench.

Have fun shooting precision rifle – like a world champion!

Would You Shoot That Condition?
We make the nicest friends at a benchrest shoot – here I’m at the St. Louis Nationals in 2017, waiting for a match to start. The banter on the line is friendly and light. A shooter asks, “Would you shoot that condition?” and two of us answer “Yeah!!!” Fun times. Memories at the range.

Oh No! – Four+1 Groups – Don’t Do This!
(Why I didn’t do better at the NBRSA Group Nationals....)
Here are three tips to avoid the dreaded Four+1 group.

1) Strong Crosswinds along the full length of the field are difficult because light tails are already fully strung-out in a moderate wind. I likely missed a change from a zero-value tailwind at the far end of the range to a full-value crosswind. A strong crosswind along the full length of the range can easily move your bullet to the far edge of the target – each shot past the target border adds a minute-of-angle penalty, or 2 inches to a 200-yard target. Yikes!

2) Switches or Reversals can wreck the best targets. Watch the mid-field flags turn orange for a split second – I froze the video so you could see the change. Although a single flag switch in mild winds won’t affect the bullet much, a reversal in strong winds will cause a train wreck. The second target is an example of how a switch to a right wind will blow the bullet high and to the left on target.

3) Letups are a Shooter’s Best Friend – just make sure to get your shots downrange before the winds pick up again. Don’t spend precious time confirming shots on the sighter. The third target is an example of just that – dinking around on the sighter caused me to lose the last shot when the wind picked up.

Watch World Champion and American Benchrest Hall of Fame member Wayne Campbell dominate the Unlimited weight class at the 2022 Short-Range Group Nationals, held at the Bench Rest Rifle Club in St. Louis Missouri.

Wayne's target shows how tough the conditions were. Wayne won the Unlimited class and went on to win the 2022 National 4-gun Championship trophy, which is an aggregate of all targets shot during the week in Sporter, Light, Heavy (5-shot targets) and Unlimited (10-shot target) classes.

Congratulations to Wayne and all the other winners!

How would your target measure up at the Super Shoot?

You asked me to show you targets and I listened!

This is at the iconic Kelbly’s benchrest range at the SuperShoot. These are 200 yard groups - some big and some small. These groups prove it’s not that easy to shoot small groups in benchrest!

After forty-eight years, this was the last time ever the Super Shoot will be held at Kelbly’s.

– Super Shoot XLVIII was won with a 0.2513 moa aggregate!

NBRSA Nationals – Let’s Watch!

Hi, my name is Vera Carter and in this video you’ll see the top pros shoot at the National Benchrest Rifle Shooters Association (NBRSA) Short-Range Group Nationals in St. Louis, Missouri. This nail-biting match was held in 2017. The competition then was just as tight as it will be at the Nats in 2022!

These are professional world-class shooters on a safe and closed range, with Range Safety Officers overseeing all matches - for educational purposes with the goal of helping competitive shooters achieve their goals at the target shooting range. All safety precautions and measures were taken during the shoot. This video content is allowed per TikTok Community Guidelines.

I’m a world champion and you’ll also watch me shooting free recoil in the video, but the highlight comes at the end when another shooter reveals his screamer group – it’s under ÂŒ inch MOA at 200 yards – watch closely to see the group size!

Apologies for text overlays in the video, but I’m working to satisfy the TikTok algorithm so I can continue to post amazing videos where I show you all about the great sport of precision rifle shooting from the bench!

Watch to see if I blink : )

Hey everyone. In this video, I show you what I see through my benchrest scope, and how I read mirage!

Those striped boards on either side of the target are there to read the mirage (they’re called mirage boards). But you can see mirage on any vertical line, like at the top of the target, or across the bars holding the target frame.

Do you see that ripple slowly moving to the right?

Zero wind: will cause a boil, like heat waves rippling upwards.

Light breeze: mirage will look like a gentle sine wave moving in the direction of the wind.

Moderate wind: frequency of the sine wave will increase.

Strong wind: mirage will completely disappear (good idea to stop shooting).

Wind switch: mirage will change direction in real time – there’s no delay, unlike flags which take time to turn

That’s a quick look at mirage.

Did you see it?
