Synecdoche

Synecdoche Synecdoche is a national literary arts journal and small press based at Brown University in Providence, RI.

In an age increasingly defined by technological wizardry, the ability of the artist to mold his/her world is consistently put into question. Our lives are shaped by social media; our language is fragmented into Tweets and status updates. Consequently, “art” is often locked away within the boundaries of “genre,” “form,” and “medium.” Perhaps, though, the definition of artistic creation need not be

compartmentalized. In fact, art, in its quest to probe both the dark and hopeful complexities of its particular culture, has the ability to shatter these very structures in which it is held captive. We live in a time overflowing with data; artists now have the ability to dig through archives that have only recently become available in an attempt to better understand the present. Synecdoche seeks work from unknown, emerging, and established writers and artists that strives to bridge the chasms between past & present, sight & sound, personal & universal, work that experiments with the possibilities of blurring its own genres. Printed biannually, Synecdoche endeavors to be both a product of creative collaboration and a documentation of the artistic process at work.
