The event begins with the Positive Movement Drum Line (put down the guns, pick up a drum) leading a procession of community members and participants from the corner of 25th and Jackson into the pavilion. We encourage attendees to bring large photos of their loved ones lost to gun violence in Philadelphia.

Avis Balkcom-Williams, Pianist who will participate in Wake Up, Rise Up, LIVE 4 Peace 2024 on the Hypeman's stage hosted by Mikal Keller.

Avis began her musical training at the age of five years old in Bridgeport, Connecticut under the tutelage of the neighborhood piano teacher who just happened to be her mother, Mrs. Odessa Ridley Balkcom. Avis also participated in bands and orchestras, playing the flute and saxophone which earned her an opportunity to perform as first flutist with the Bridgeport Symphony Youth Orchestra in London, England while she was in middle school.

In middle school, Avis began to study piano and flute with local teachers that could prepare her for college. Several years later, Avis was accepted into Howard University where she earned her B. Mus. Ed. in instrumental music with saxophone as her main instrument. She was studying saxophone under Dr. Reginald Jackson while keeping her piano skills honed with the help of Mr. Thomas Kerr, Mr. Thomas Flagg,and Mr. Shelton Becton. After several years in the banking field, Avis returned to Howard to earn her M.Mus degree in piano performance. Dr. Raymond Jackson became her primary piano teacher. Avis has also completed a year of doctoral studies in the Doctor of Musical Arts program at the University of MD College Park.

Avis' career includes teaching instrumental music in DC and Prince George's County Public Schools. At DC´s West Elementary School she revived a defunct band program which evolved into a 75 piece marching unit which performed regularly around town. The annual highlight was the Cherry Blossom Parade.

Presently Mrs. Balkcom is teaching piano students at her own Mostly Piano Music Studio. She serves as director and accompanist of the Gospel Choir and Men's Choir at Clinton United Methodist Church. She is also a Montgomery County Public School substitute teacher who especially loves to fill in for music and Spanish classes.

Avis lives in Maryland with her husband, Macon Williams who is also a musician. Collectively they have five adult children and nine grandchildren which include a set of identical twin girls.

“WAKE UP RISE UP” message from Ms Classic Universe.
It was in the nineties when I first met the late Dr. Renee Reynolds Lawson. I was teaching at her Alma Mater, Olney high school in Philly when I invited her to perform for my music classes.
At that time she was a background vocalist for McFadden & Whitehead TSOP “Ain’t No Stopping Us Now”.

Unfortunately on May 11, 2004, John Whitehead was fatally shot, possibly in a case of mistaken identity, while fixing a car outside his home in Philadelphia.

Renee was one of the first entertainers who joined Wake Up Rise Up. She passed on December 12, 2021 a few months after the first WURU worldwide event.
When she competed in Vegas and won the title of Ms.Classic Universe for 2021-2022, her platform was about Domestic Violence.
