“Movie Knight”
Taking place on a Hollywood film set, a director struggles to film a climactic final showdown between a knight and a fierce dragon. On-set antics ensue between the bonehead actor, hot-tempered director, and animatronic dragon puppet.

A work of blood, sweat, tears, anger, worry, expense, and exhaustion, the production of this float really checked all the boxes. Be that as it may, this project was my dream come true. For much of my life, I had always wanted to build my own controllable puppet, with inspiration drawn from movie creatures made by Stan Winston Studio and theme park animatronics made by Disney. With Snowdown providing a catalyst towards this lifelong desire, I decided to go for it.

The production of this dragon began two years ago. Originally, the float was meant for last year’s Snowdown, until it was cancelled. But as soon as Snowdown was announced for this year, work on the float resumed.

The story, as mentioned above, molded the design. An articulating dragon puppet needed to be constructed. It did not need to be hyper-realistic as many movie props are not and gain help in post-production. This puppet only needed a head and neck as something for a knight actor to interact with. The creature was planned and designed in CAD over 10 days. With only a month to produce the float from start to finish, I knew January would be busy. After a final design was settled, I began buying supplies and building the dragon.

The project began with a Styrofoam block. This block was expertly carved into a terrifying head by my sister, Annie. The inspiration behind the design was the dragon beneath the castle in Disneyland Paris. This is a slender yet angular dragon. One with an ominous presence like no other. After the head was sculpted, I sculpted the jaw. I had never sculpted foam before, but as challenging as it was, I rather enjoyed it. Next up was casting the head to create a sturdier final product. The Styrofoam was covered with plaster bandages, creating a negative mold. That mold was filled with a lightweight, yet very strong foam, like Nerf material. With the “skeleton” of the head complete, it was then covered with cloth using pins and spray glue.

With the head complete, a sturdy base and control arm had to be assembled to operate the movements of the head. Due to my budget, the arm had to be entirely wood, making it heavy, but I made do. The neck assembly consisted of a 16ft boom arm which pivoted on a solid wooden base. At the end of the boom arm, a hand-made u-joint allowed the head to move in all directions. A mechanism for the jaw was attached to this u-joint. The entire dragon was controlled by steel cables and pulleys with controls built on the back of the boom pole to be operated by puppeteers. This aspect of the build took many sleepless nights of trial and error to get the dragon to move correctly while maintaining structural stability and ease of operation.

As soon as the neck was complete, the head could be mounted with all effect mechanisms installed, such as the gas lines for fire and the smoke machine. With everything installed, the dragon was fully covered in a “skin” and mounted to a trailer for the parade.

Now the story I just told was insanely oversimplified, but you get the idea. What this story fails to tell is of the immense stress, weathered hands, zero sleep, bitter cold, design challenges, and logistical nightmares associated with this project.

But even with all that, I do not regret this project and I'm so happy to have done it! I learned so much and can now say that a lifelong dream is complete. And given another opportunity, I would do it all again.

To everyone who supported me by keeping up with my progress or coming to see the parade, thank you! To the Culhanes for generously lending me their flatbed trailer, thank you! To Emily for writing such a cool script, thank you! To my brother (Nicholaus) and his family for helping bring the head to life and act in the parade, thank you! To my sister, Annie, for her creative help and wonderful sculpting skills, thank you! To my amazing parents (Martha) for dropping everything to help me finish the float in time and making sure it turned out as I wanted, a huge thank you! To my friends, Garrett and Holden, for making time in their busy schedules to be part of this dream and providing such appreciated talent, thank you! To my girlfriend, Marissa, for keeping me standing through all my mental breakdowns, doubts, sleep deprived nights, and concerns, thank you!

Thank you everyone for being a part of this dream of mine! I very much hope it brought you joy and wonder. Until next time!

SWCYC 2021 was a major success!

The theme this year was Genesis, rather fitting after taking the conference online last year. Genesis marked 10 years of SWCYC - Southwest Catholic Youth Conference and a return to an in-person conference.

As always, it's a joy getting to work with LifeGuard and grow my storytelling skills through more complex projects.
A huge thank you to Holden Grace for his work on the short!
