A Global Experience w/ Mike Mannix on KSQD A Global Experience| KSQD 90.7 FM | Santa Cruz, CA. | Stream at KSQD.org | Mondays | 10PM - midnight

Two hours of not so strictly psychedelic music that crosses genres, spans the globe, and reaches across eras. Like many of the other programs on WXNA, most of the music will be played from vinyl. As a result, some occasional pops and crackles are to be expected. Labels and bands looking to send material for airplay- please message Psych Out for more information.

Tonight. 10pm west coast time. On KSQD 90.7 FM Community Radio
90.7 FM and ksqd.org

I’ve been slacking on the social media, but along with a slight shift in formatting is coming a recommitment to keep up with social media.

Listener response has been positive to the more eclectic sounds of the program, so I’ll be doubling down on that feedback and shifting the program in that direction.

Tune in and enjoy the ride!

Episode 4 is up on Mixcloud. Take a listen as we roll through some Turkish funk and psych, some Italian grooves, and laid back Japanese rock jams from the early 70s. The second hour hits the outer spaceways with a mighty dose of spiritual jazz and concludes with a blast of Bolivian and Peruvian prog.

Just a sampling of the international programming we have here at KSQD 90.7 FM Community Radio in Santa Cruz!

Episode 3 of ‘A Global Experience’ on KSQD 90.7 FM Community Radio is up on the Mixcloud. The second hour digs deep into some pedal steel guitar from 1980s Africa … a glorious era for juju music and its use of pedal steel.

“FUSION. THE LOST ART”

The song the caller is asking about is Casiopea’s “Space Road” - a track from their 1979 self titled debut. The song almost didn’t make the cut for this episode. Certainly glad it did. A true Santa Cruz moment.

On the deck today is the newly issued collection from The Woods, a sort of post-punk art rock group from 80s NYC. Some Velvet Underground vibes in there too. The group included Linda Smith, one for the pioneers of 90s lo-fi home studio recording.

I had the honor of writing the liner notes and learning about the band’s history. I was nervous, because I went way over the word count. Well, that ended up being a good thing, because they turned the liners into a zine, which is included with the album. Bookended with a couple show flyers. Pretty damn cool.

I get to sub in again this evening on KSQD and make my case for why I should have a show. The schedule is tight, and it looks like world music may be my entry way to getting back on the air on a regular basis. I feel like I’m relatively prepared. If you like what you hear, let them know at [email protected]

The gameplan tonight is to start off in Brazil and somehow make my way to Pakistan and India. How will it happen? Tune in tonight to a Global Experience and find out. 10-midnight on and ksqd.org

Hitting the airwaves again tonight at 10pm for two hours of global music. This time it’s a focus on global psych, with half the show rooted in the 60s and 70s, and the the second half in the more contemporary era.

Gonna be back on the airwaves this week, filling in for Denise and her ‘Oblique Strategies’ program on KSQD 90.7 FM Community Radio in Santa Cruz, CA. Keeping true to her format, you can expect two hours of ambient, new age, space rock, electronic, and related sounds. From across the eras and the genres. 10pm to midnight, left coast time. Sunday, September 3rd. If that’s past your bedtime, yes, there is an archive.

For those unfamiliar, Oblique Strategies is a card-based method for promoting creativity, jointly created by Brian Eno andPeter Schmidt - back in 1975. The original iteration of Denise’s radio show, named after the card set, dates back to 1978. She’s a real OG.

I am extremely happy that the Psych Out! time slot will now fall into the hands of Paul B and The Smell Of Incense. I’ve gotten to know Paul over the past few years, and there is no one better suited to fill the Wednesday night airwaves with heady sounds and astral travels. ✌🏼✌🏼

Catch him this evening from 7-9 pm central time on WXNA and wxnafm.org.

Well, friends. After 337 episodes the end has come. The family is moving to Santa Cruz, CA next month, and this week's episode will be the last for Psych Out!.

I choked up a bit last week while on air. I suspect it will happen again this week. Luckily, I have brought in a guest to distract myself a bit. Michael Hix from Nashville Ambient Ensemble will be playing some of his guitar compositions live here in the studio. Psych Out! Session Thirteen.

WXNA is an experience I will carry with me for the rest of my days. Thank you, everyone, for your friendship and support Thanks to the OG board members for taking a chance on me and my vision.

I'll hopefully land at the community station out in Santa Cruz. It won't be Psych Out!, but it won't stray too far from the theme.

Tune in tonight. 7-9 PM central time. 101.5 FM and wxnafm.org

Two episodes left. Tonight is Episode 336.

Here’s a couple flyers I used early on, back in 2016. The first was for Episode 2. The Timothy Leary one was a flyer I posted around town. At the record stores. At shows. All over telephone poles. That’s also when the show was 5-7 pm. I LOVED that slot. I got bumped to 9-11 pm, but it was still a good time …. because it was a great crew: Paul Glavin, Bob Irwin, and Gina Frary Bacon.

In 2018 I ended up in the current 7-9 pm slot. And I’ll admit, probably a bit more appropriate than 5-7.

Throughout the years I brought local artists in to play live in the studio. These sessions were a highlight for me. And tonight I’ll share some of those moments. You’ll hear some Groundkeepers (Lou Turner w/ Trevor Nikrant) Joseph Allred, Luke Schneider, Holy Mountain Top Removers, John Condit and the Inscape, Rich Ruth w/ Spencer Cullum · Official Music …. all recorded live at WXNA. A night of Psych Out! Sessions.

And next week there will be one more Psych Out! Session w/ Michael Hix of Nashville Ambient Ensemble.

Tune in. 7-9 pm central time. 101.5 FM and wxnafm.org.

There are four episodes of Psych Out! on WXNA remaining. For the most part they’ll be explorations of some of my favorite songs and jams, a sort of “greatest hits” kinda thing.

Tonight will also feature new music from fellow California bound Nashvillians, Ttotals. Also, an homage to one of the under-sung architects of hard rock, the recently departed Tony McPhee of the Groundhogs.

It’s episode 334. Wednesday night. 7-9’PM central time. WXNA | 101.5 FM | wxnafm.org

Centripetal Sundays are back for two more shows, including this week’s edition, which features the mighty duo of Lou Turner and Trevor Nikrant, as well has Josh Halper and Parker James, who killed it back in April on vibes w/ Synchronicity Ensemble. Also playing is Brainweight Caleb in collaboration with guitarist Matthew Campbell.

These showcases are free, both as exploratory opportunities for the artists, as well as admission.

Music starts up around 5:30 and will wrap up around 8:00. Please tip generously. Vinyl Tap Nashville.

My days in Nashville are officially numbered. I’m not the type to have some big going away get together or anything, but if you get a chance, stop by Sunday for high-fives, handshakes, and hugs. It would be good to see you. ✌🏼

Taking my last turn in the rotation tonight. 🙁

It has been fun to explore everything from the band’s MIDI days to their bluegrass roots. The pedal steel moments, the collaborations, and the side projects. Tonight, it’s a mish mash of loose ends that features Ornette Coleman, David Murray, and Sammy Hagar. Yes, Sammy Hagar.

Tonight 8 PM central time on . 101.5 FM and wxnafm.org.

Episode 333 will have special guests Rich Ruth and Spencer Cullum in studio to talk music and play some tunes.

Both of these guys have new albums out, and Rich Ruth is playing Basement East this Saturday.

It’s Psych Out Session #12. Tune in 7-9 PM central time on WXNA and 101.5 FM on the dial.
