Sal Stewart spoke after the Cincinnati Reds’ fifth straight loss on Monday night.

“We just missed out on maybe one of those big hits,” Stewart said. “It’s a rough patch right now, but at the end of the day, we’ve got to stick together.”

On whether it feels like every 50-50 break or coin flip is going against the Reds right now:

“Yeah, it’s tough,” Stewart said. “They say when it rains, it pours, but this is what we get paid to do. We’ve got to go out there and win games. It feels tough right now. It feels like we’re kind of treading through quicksand a little bit. I feel like we’re right there in these games, but they’re just not going our way. We’ve just got to stay the course, and I still feel like we’re in a good spot.”

Cincinnati Reds manager Terry Francona addressed the Padres’ three straight successful sacrifice bunts in the seventh inning, pointing to a mix of aggressiveness and rushed ex*****on by Cincinnati’s defense.

“On the first one, we were trying to be ultra-aggressive,” Francona said. “Sal (Stewart) got very aggressive there, and I don’t even know if Tejay (Antone) makes that play anyway based on where the bunt was.”

Francona defended Stewart’s decision on the second bunt attempt, where the rookie tried to make a barehanded play.

“I thought that was his only play,” Francona said. “If he makes it cleanly, I think he has a chance to get him out. That was the right play. It was just hit firmly and didn’t work out.”

On the third bunt, Francona felt the moment may have sped up on Antone.

“I think it just sped up on Tejay a little bit,” Francona said.
