I couldn’t figure out how to turn this into a written piece, so I just shared it like this. Recorded a short podcast episode (with transcript available in the post) about how difficult it is for me to reconnect online after long absences (of which I’ve had to take a few). This one is a touch more vulnerable than I’ve done lately.

Episode 200 is around the corner. Yes, I’m fudging the numbers and counting re-releases. This project has been a labor of love from the very beginning. The “space” has exploded in subsequent years, as a robust counterpublic arose to respond to white evangelical activities causing harm, and various communities were formed, etc. I hope you check out the episode. The work continues and continues to change, just as we all do.

Up for paid subscribers on Substack: I wrote about the He Gets Us ad campaign, which utterly misses the point. In the “colorblind” era of American Christianity (when I was raised), the phrase “it’s a sin problem not a skin problem” was a term used to deflect racially focused conversation & action. This ad campaign is also deflection.

My guest today is Becca Andrews. Becca is a journalist at Reckon News, and author of the new book No Choice: The Destruction of Roe v. Wade and the Fight to Protect a Fundamental American Right. She has been reporting on reproductive rights and justice, as well as related topics such as purity culture, for several years and her work has also appeared at Mother Jones, Jezebel, and Teen Vogue, among others.

Content note: I want to note that this episode deals directly with abortion and other aspects of reproductive care. For people in my age cohort—Elder Millennials and younger who grew up in conservative white evangelicalism, abortion was absolutely vilified, as were the people who needed them. This conversation starts there, and then looks at the history of reproductive care in the United States from the 19th century through today.

I mention this near the end of my conversation with Becca, but I also want to mention it at the top - her book tells the stories of people in need of reproductive health care—including abortion—with tenderness and compassion. They are told in their contexts within the book; we do not appropriate them for this conversation. I highly recommend that you go out and purchase this book to read them for yourself.
