This Saturday night Papa and Panfa will be hanging out with the Official Friends and homies at the glorious Carwyn Cellars!

There will be epic bottles shared, Panfa awkwardly trying to figure out who you are and Papa grinning ear to ear while carrying around magnums.

Word on the street is some of Australia's best brewers will be joining us!

The boys will also be at Gabs for both sessions Friday, so look out for them, they'll most likely be hanging out at the Larry stand with our boy or cuddling and many more!!!

It's no secret, we've been busy and it's been tough balancing things out this summer! So we wanted to say sorry in the only way we know how...with a HUGE episode covering LAGER!

Allow us to Reintroduce Ourselves.

Here at the Steppies we’ve gone through a long period of change and like a batch of golden wild ale, we’ve percolated in our fod-ray for the summer period, developing and evolving into something special.

Through 2022 we’re going back to our roots. We’re going to keep a lot of your favourites; Sip Skip Cellar, Papa retracting dumb things he said, Panfa mispronouncing anything to do with Belgium ales and Time in Barrel. But the Podcast is going to flow more. Think episodes with less segments and more story telling.

There are great podcasts out there covering beer news and origin stories (who they are we have no idea. But love that for them). While we might still touch on these things, we are focussing on the deep dives, having fun with it, maybe saying some stuff we shouldn’t and most of all making sure you get the Steppies laughs, insights and stories you’ve loved.

So buckle up. Carb is at +4.0 volumes of CO2 right now and Steppies 2022 about to buss all over your linen closet.

The weight of expectation can be a powerful force in how we experience a beer. Someone explains how expensive/rare/exclusive their bottleshare contribution is and sets an air of expectation that can often lead to disappointment or the collective circle jerk of celebrating something that is honestly just fine...but for the name it carries. Reality is often disappointing.

Speaking of expectation, what weight does that bring to our first experience of the mixed culture program? Better known for big hyped up hazies and what should be considered Australia's best barrel aged stouts, it's a little difficult to know what will come from this foray into the fod-rays.
If JC's love of the original hypey boi the BBA stout is on display with the Fray series, then the first of the mixed culture beers, a 4% biere de coupage, shows the value Neddo places on restraint and poise. Perfectly balanced, as all things should be, this nimble young beer throws layers of sherbet, lemon, spring hay and honeysuckle. There's restraint and finesse, but then it's just all so simple and enjoyable.

There's an almost whimsical note to it, like the screams of 1,000 haze bros souls withering as the dawning realisation hits them. This wasn't brewed for me. This isn't going to be on my top 2021 untapped wrap up. I still think saisons are dead. But this new wave of beers in Australia that focus on drinkability and nuance are just the start and at the end of it all, we shall look out upon a grateful beer scene.

Iterations is a great introduction to their mixed culture program. Just because Deeds is written on the label, does not mean this cannot be a restrained, simple and vibrant young thing. We don't need to come out of the gates brash and aggressive, though their heavily fruited follow ups may well give it a fair Levi Funk-eque shake.

Expectation is inevitable. Now we would like this in 500ml cans all summer long please.

It's become a Christmas tradition on Steppies to save the best for last each Christmas. We spend the year gorging ourselves on the most delectable brewers, personalities and beverages this great country has to offer. But once our little tums are full and we've settled onto the couch for a little nap, Uncle Noel approved, there's always that lingering thought...  Maybe there's a little room. Maybe I'll head over to the table once more. There's always room for pud. Or a little barelywine.

Teaming up with for Sip Skip Cellar was always a no brainer to us. They’re great at highlighting lesser know producers, certified grog and silent grog assassins of note.

is one of these great little highlights from Ryan’s recommendations so far. With the success experienced by bigger names like Hop Nation with their Rattenhund and Hawkers recently with their Lucky 13 offering, there have been some cracking pilsners released of late, and from a myriad of styles too.

Foreigner’s Czech Pils is no exception. Infinitely crushable, well made with no bulls**t. Hell...the Pilly Panfa himself bought a case.

So next time you’re looking in a fridge, be like The Great Beyond crew. Reach for something new, something from a lesser known producer and spread the good word of certified grog.

One of the best things about this whole crazy Steppies thing is the people you meet along the way.

First watching chugging sub 3 second pig cans, his wild mane swinging in the wind, nitro foam laced through his moustache, it was love at first sight. Just a moment in time, where you sit back and nod to each other "yeah that's h***y hey".

Fast forward to now and that man is not only a great fiend and homie of the show, but at the helm of .brewingco whete he is honing his craft as head brewer, after first cutting his teeth with Black Hops.

It's often underestimated and misunderstood the time and effort that goes into helping launch a new brewery/brewpub. Being a one man band, having the pressure of owners and your own vision perhaps not aligning, the pressure of running production and growing a brand. Then jamming going through all that with covid going on all at the same time.

What we see in Easy Times and Curran's beer is a brewer who despite all that pressure finds a way to keep pushing, learning, refining process and striving for the balance of pushing creatively while producing quality, super drinkable grog. You'll often see through his stories a new process, book or product. Something. Anything. To keep on pushing.

If you see Easy Times in your local fridge. Get them. They feel together. Like a brewer who's been honing his craft and is comfortable with the brewhouse, in sync with his process. Almost like that scene in the Matrix where Trinity and Neo are like shooting around each other and make eye contact. "I know Neo. I know."

And he's just getting started. Love you king.
