Beer Travelist Drink Well. Travel Far. Good beer is for everyone, all the time, everywhere. Freelance journalist Brian Spencer is the founder of Beer Travelist.

Based in Singapore, Beer Travelist is an award-winning online magazine that takes traveling (and local) beer enthusiasts down beer trails around the world, with a focus on Asia Pacific's emerging craft beer culture. At Beer Travelist, we help you find that good stuff, share stories about the people making and selling it, and hopefully spark inspiration to hit the road in search of your own beer tr

avel nirvana. After all, in many ways the beer trail is a perfect gateway into a given city’s best bits–its friendliest people, its coolest bars, and sometimes even its tastiest food. With a particular focus on the Asia-Pacific region, where in recent years craft beer has gone gangbusters, we spotlight compelling beer bars, take deep dives into new and notable breweries, suggest itineraries for hitting the highlights of a given city’s beer scene, and much more. We frame our stories through travel and maintain a dedicated focus on informed, honest, and independent narrative journalism. We follow business news and developments in the beer industry, but rarely cover them here. Following more than a decade in Brooklyn, NY, and a few short stints in Bangkok, he relocated to Singapore in 2012. He has written beer and travel stories for myriad publications, including BBC Travel, BeerAdvocate Magazine, CNN Travel, Lonely Planet, The New York Times, and Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia.

Hi there.

Brian Spencer here, founder of this fine publication, to share a bit of personal news (below), which may help explain the dearth of new stories lately.

In mid-November I joined Ren Min as Brand Director. For those of you unfamiliar with the story, Ren Min grew out of 3rd Culture Brewing Co, which began as a taproom in Maxwell Food Centre, one of Singapore's best hawker centres. Eventually 3rd Culture opened a second hawker bar.

Founder Manbeer Singh decided to retire the 3rd Culture brand and reintroduce as Ren Min to coincide with the launch of "our" own brewery here in Singapore. Construction is underway, with production starting around June/July.

We're contract brewing until then, and our hawker bars Welcome Ren Min and Hello Ren Min are going as strong as ever.

This has been a challenging, consuming, and more than anything fun and rewarding experience thus far. I'm proud of what we as a team have accomplished since our debut as Ren Min on 29 December 2020, and am so psyched about what's still to come.

The one downside to this has been less time at the moment for Beer Travelist. But as I semi-recently noted on Instagram, this publication isn't going anywhere; in fact I'm sitting on several stories that need to see the light of day, and they will, just as soon as I'm able. I hope you'll stick around, and maybe keep tabs on what we're up to at Ren Min in the meantime.

When I launched Beer Travelist in May 2017 I intended to build it into a respected source for (mostly) long-form, (always) high-quality storytelling about craft beer and craft beer culture. I have never prioritised or had interest in churning out content for the sake of it, and that hasn't changed. Quality, in other words, has always been more important to me than quantity... and I'm not just saying that due to the lack of new content lately. 😆

Finally, there'll be no conflict of interest between Beer Travelist and Ren Min. There's an understanding that I won't be doing any in-depth stories on Ren Min here, and that any mention whatsoever will include full disclosure about my relationship with Ren Min.

Thanks for staying along for the ride. And I hope you're staying sane and finding bright sides in these crazy fu***ng times.

Cheers,

Brian Spencer
