Amanda Mangan Journalist Freelance Journalist focused on agriculture news in Ohio I began my career in journalism in 1995 in Cleveland.

I’ve worked for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, interned for WTAM 1100 AM in Cleveland, also worked for WLCC Radio and several radio stations and newspapers in Athens, Ohio. I graduated with a bachelor's degree in journalism from Ohio University in the Scripps Howard School of Journalism 2003. I started working for West Virginia Radio Corporation as an afternoon news anchor in Morgantown, WV in 2004.

I was with Allegany Radio Corporation when it began in 2006. I provided live news updates weekdays, and I was the news and public service director for Allegany Radio Corporation in Cumberland, Maryland. I was also the host of Potomac Highlands Today on WKLP-1390AM and Tri-State Today on WCMD 102.1 FM and 1230 AM. In 2022 I stepped away from WVRC and ARC and moved back to Ohio. I am currently a freelance journalist focused on agriculture news across Ohio.

The USDA announced that six projects in Ohio will get a portion of $608,000 through the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program. The Ohio Department of Agriculture will distribute the funding for the projects that are designed to strengthen Ohio’s specialty crop industry through education, marketing and research.

22 Counties in Ohio have been declared as primary natural disaster areas due to drought. The designation means the USDA and FSA will be able to provide emergency credit to farm operators through the FSA emergency loan assistance program. Several contiguous counties in Ohio and West Virginia were also included in the designation. The deadline to apply for loans is April 28th, 2025.

Fourteen communities across the state will get more than $330,000 in Grow Ohio Grants to fund local agricultural education opportunities for children. Governor Mike DeWine and Department of Education and Workforce Director Stephen D. Dackin released the details this week. The funding will go to programs that support farm to school projects including outdoor and indoor gardening, hydroponics, collaboration with local food producers and food literacy. More than $14.3 million dollars in Patrick Leahy Farm to School Grants are going to more than 150 projects in 43 states including Ohio. The funding will help close to 2 million children eat more nutritious foods in school while also supporting farmers and producers in their local communities. Thanks to the addition of 500,000 acres of cropland a total of 2.2 million acres statewide are enrolled in the H2Ohio program. Governor Mike DeWine and Ohio Department of Agriculture Director Brian Baldridge made the announcement this week. DeWine says since the beginning of the program farmers have shown they are dedicated to the mission and being a part of the solution toward better water quality.
