WAR ON ALL FRONTS is an underground Heavy Metal print fanzine with an international scope, based in Ireland and following on from the earlier Irish zine Northern Blaze. Our first issue was released in the autumn of 2011 featuring interviews with Desaster, Portrait, Nuit Noire, Ereb Altor, The Wounded Kings and Fuil Na Seanchoille as well as live reports and over 100 demo/album reviews of Heavy/Thr
ash/Black/Death/Doom/Punk releases from that year. The style was kept intentionally sloppy and cut n paste as an homage to the great zines of old like Slayer, and the writing was undertaken mostly by Buarainech with contributions from Rigor Mortis. Although far from perfect issue #1 was the end result of an in-depth style of reviewing that has become the WOAF calling card and counted among the best in the print zine world. After issue #1 Rigor Mortis parted ways with WOAF and I (Buarainech) began work on a follow up issue. Progress was made as the reviewing style was honed even more while the interviews were being geared more towards deeper topics like philosophy, introspection and the esoteric, and the previously used cut n paste style was ditched in favour of a more high art aesthetic. Early in 2013 it became obvious that financial concerns would make releasing WOAF #2 impossible and the project was shelved, first of all temporarily and then indefinitely. WAR ON ALL FRONTS was resurrected again at the end of the summer of this year inspired by the excellent year of releases that has been occurring, arguably the best for Metal in 2/3 decades. Rather than start work all over again on another conventional issue of the zine the project is now focused on WOAF Anno Domini 2013. The plan for this bumper-size issue is to work around the theme of the rude health of Heavy Metal at the present moment in time and to chronicle what can be seen as a new golden era. To this effect WOAF Anno Domini 2013 will attempt to review as many of this year's fine (and some not so fine) releases with the same in-depth analysis our first issue showed. The inaugural issue featured over 100 reviews- this time we are aiming for well over double that, without compromising our honest and critical style. To facilitate this and to avoid being constricted by page limits WOAF Anno Domini 2013 will initially be released to be read online and as a downloadable .pdf in December, with a view to releasing a printed edition shortly after. Reflecting changes in online music distribution we hope to make this digital release available under a PWYW (pay what you want) download scheme, or allow donations/pre-orders to be made by thankful readers to contribute financially to the printing cost of the printed edition. We will also be posting daily links to killer music that we are currently reviewing on here, so make sure to subscribe to our updates. Like with music, revenue schemes for print media have been greatly altered by technological advancement. WAR ON ALL FRONTS is looking for a way to combat the outdated (and often integrity-compromising) method of seeking advertising in order to fund rising printing costs and falling levels of readership. Sites like Bandcamp have given artists a platform to allow people to hear their music for free, allow those people who still believe in supporting artists to pay what they can afford for a digital copy of it, and distribute a physical product to those who still appreciate it all at the same time. WOAF is looking to pioneer a similar platform that will allow it and other great fanzines a chance to continue into the future.
