Round 1, 2 years in
The headache is like your head is the grape
and the virus is
the thumb and forefinger
rolling your head till it’s pulpy
The bedroom air is hot cotton
stifling each try at a normal breath
The only acceptable air is
8 degrees fresh from outside
Laying for too long on one side makes that hip feel
like it’s been a hip for 150 years
But to roll over enrages your pulpy head
so that it fills again with pressure
for the virus fingers' pleasure
The dreams are busy, and all about how not to give covid
Going 24 hours without a toothbrush is an unwise choice
forcing you out of bed
at 3:50 in the morning
even though you’re clattering with cold
After 30 hours the smell in the room
is potato chips and it’s time to wash the sheets
You wake to the news
that pap is in the hospital
and later you find out he didn’t make it
And the headache doesn’t seem like that big of a deal
