Part 1: Das Orchester Magazine Review of the
Monograph of the Antonio Stradivari Cello c.1690 ‘Barjansky’

A few years ago, the Jost-ThĂśne-Verlag set the bar high for the quality of new publications on violin making with its eight-volume comprehensive presentation of all of Antonio Stradivari's string instruments. The latest monographic publication follows on from this documentation, but now goes into greater depth by devoting itself to a single instrument by Stradivari from all conceivable historical and instrument-making perspectives, namely the "Barjansky" violoncello built around 1690.
For this purpose, the Alago Family Foundation, which has been in possession of the cello since 2019, has commissioned scholarly research whose breadth and quality dwarf anything previously devoted to the study of a single instrument. As extraordinary as this undertaking is in its entirety, the magnificent and visually stunning presentation of the results in English is equally unique. Primarily historically oriented essays deal with the question of what role Stradivari generally plays within the history of the development of the violoncello, provide insights into the circle of his customers, or reconstruct the changing ownership of the "Barjansky" from its creation to the present.

Part 2: Das Orchester Magazine Review of the
Monograph of the Antonio Stradivari Cello c.1690 ‘Barjansky’

Other contributions are devoted to the instrument from the perspective of violin making. Particularly instructive are the explanations, supported by numerous illustrations, diagrams and comparisons with the "Mediceo" cello built in 1690, of the changes made by unknown hands which led to a reduction in the size of the "Barjansky". A comprehensive report on the "Barjansky" restoration also provides never-before-seen insights into the inner workings of the instrument.
The scientific investigations, in turn, record - for example by means of 3-D computer tomography and digital measurement - the finest structural details, provide information about the varnish and its changes by means of ultraviolet and infrared fluorescence photography, or narrow down the origin of the wood types used by means of dendrochronological methods. In addition, aspects such as the instrument's shape, which is not strictly symmetrical but "biological" as it were, or the question of the tonal effects of modern stringing are also discussed.

Part 3: Das Orchester Magazine Review of the
Monograph of the Antonio Stradivari Cello c.1690 ‘Barjansky’

From the high-quality paper to the abundance of photographs showing the instrument and its components from every conceivable angle, this volume proves to be an extremely sensual affair. The fact that this is not a completed project, but rather a field that remains open, can be taken from the indication that in the future new findings about the "Barjansky" will be added to the publisher's website, where high-resolution 3-D visualizations of the cello are already stored in an area accessible to buyers.
