The Pull of Autumn: Memory Tree (2024) - mini-review
US band The Pull of Autumn are out with the album "Memory Tree", and this is a production that possibly may be explained as being a part of the progressive rock universe on some level, and that at least will be of interest to some of the people that tend to adore progressive rock. The most striking and defining feature in this care are the backdrops. They are floating on top in a distanced manner, and comes across as electronic in nature or at least in the final ex*****on. A textured display with orchestral resonances, associations and fluctuations that exist on the halfway stage between noise and melody, and that more often than not also comes with a little bit of a cosmic feel. With what sounds like occasional expansions and additions by real or sampled but clean varieties of orchestral instruments. These textures float on top of songs that often sounds like they revolve around a singer/songwriter core foundation, not all that fleshed out from that basic premise either, although occasionally with a darker toned rock expression. The vocals are soft, controlled and dreamladen, often with a bit of a distanced or relaxed effect in play that complements the calm, ethereal but also striking backdrop perfectly. This is music that may be described as art pop, but in truth without the pop music element. Art music or ambient post-rock may be suitable expressions too, although neither of these really hits the mark here either. If you are intrigued by the notion of an album that combines elements from the ambient music, post-rock and singer/songwriter traditions into an undefinable whole, then this is a production you just might want to investigate a bit.
