On 23 January 1943, Duke Ellington and his band were performing at Carnegie Hall in New York - for a concert that was later issued on a Prestige Records album.
Johnny Hodges and Ben Webster were playing saxophones and the featured drummer on 'Jumpin' Punkins' - written by Ellington - was Sonny Greer.

Bluesville Records has announced reissues of two seminal blues records, Lonnie Johnson’s Blues & Ballads and Mississippi John Hurt’s Today!, set to be released on February 28 2025. Both are available for preorder now. Both LPs, originally on Prestigem will feature an all-analog mastering and are pressed on 180-gram vinyl.

'Workin' with the Miles Davis Quintet', a classic album from Prestige Records that features Miles Davis and John Coltrane, was recorded in 1956 at Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey. It features a wonderful cover of Ahmad Jamal's 'Ahmad's Blues'.
The album was finally released in January 1960.

Yusuf Lateef, a composer, saxophone player and flutist who died on 23 December 2013, had a sparkling career.
Lateef made five albums for Prestige Records, including 1962's 'Eastern Sounds'.

Rahsaan Roland Kirk died from a stroke on 5 December 1977, aged just 42. The multi-instrumentalist, who played tenor saxophone and flute, worked with Lalo Schifrin, including on the 1962 album ‘Big Band Bossa Nova’.
He also recorded The Jaki Byard Experience for Prestige Records in 1969.

Miles Davis and John Coltrane were at Rudy Van Gelder’s Hackensack studio for a marathon recording sessions on 26 October 1956.
Davis treated the session as if he were playing a gig, calling out the song titles and counting in the band. They quickly went from one song to another without any fuss or second takes. What resulted was eventually sequenced by Weinstock into four different albums: Cookin’, Relaxin’, Workin’, and Steamin’ for Prestige Records.
The albums not only helped to establish Miles Davis as an intrepid jazz pathfinder, but also established his quintet as one of the most significant small groups in jazz.

The trumpeter pioneered 'cool jazz', hard bop, modal playing, free-form explorations and the use of electronics. Davis died on 28 September 1991, aged 65. This classic was recorded for Prestige Records.
