My New Year’s resolution was to cook more often and it has been a rough start this week. Made a new recipe of “Taco tater tot casserole” tonight and it turned out great. I’m covered for several meals now.
It’s not often that I get to enjoy snow falling from my window as I cook. It’s a lovely Friday night.
Friday Evening: The flurries (and they’re currently big flurries) have arrived! This won’t be much… a dusting at most out of this.
A good visual from the KC area this afternoon! Bridges and overpasses freeze first
Remember how we always say that bridges often become slick faster than the roads? Well here is proof from Olathe, KS right now. Use caution if you're traveling this afternoon .
First Alert: While the focus is on snow chances for next week, my eyes are also on a developing pattern that looks to feature some below average temperatures for the middle of January. I'm growing increasingly confident in this pattern.
Additionally, I have to say that the next two weeks very well could be the most active of the winter. Not a guarantee, but there are some signals that I'm watching. We'll take it one by one and keep you updated.
You might have heard me say, "If you're wanting meaningful snow you don't want to be waiting on cold air." That's the set up on Monday/Tuesday with temperatures in the 30s during the duration of the precipitation. We'll get more clarity in the days ahead, but confidence remains low on the important parts of this system (impacts to travel and totals). I do think it's likely we'll see at least a little accumulation and minor impacts.
Cloudy on Friday with a few flurries & sprinkles by late afternoon/evening. Little to no accumulation expected. Cloudy with a few lingering flurries on Saturday. Some sunshine on Sunday. Next system arrives on Monday starting as rain, with an eventual transition to snow.
Friday Night's System: Not a big deal!
There will be a good amount of dry air in place to keep everything for Friday very limited. Parts of northwest Missouri could see up to a dusting. Storm Mode Index is at a 1 for Nuisance weather, I expect you'll be able to go about your plans with little to no problem.
Here's a glance at the probability of 3 or more inches of snow from Monday morning to Tuesday morning. Chances are highest across northwest Missouri, but note that this doesn't capture the full system as snow is expected to continue into Tuesday. We probably won't have a good idea of forecasted totals until late Saturday or Sunday.
Next week's storm system is still thousands of miles away! We have high confidence that a system moves through the Midwest early next week bringing rain and snow, likely starting late Monday and continuing into Tuesday. Watching the temps and track closely.
Thursday: Patchy fog in the morning then increasing clouds in the afternoon. Another seasonally chilly day with highs in the upper 30s.
Here's a glance at the probability of AT LEAST minor impacts next Monday night into Tuesday. Still plenty to watch in regards to track & temperatures, which will ultimately determine precip type and amounts.

Two different systems are on my radar! The first one on Friday night into Saturday doesn't look like a big deal to me. The second system that arrives early next week does look much stronger, but there is still a lot of uncertainty in regard to temperature, which will effect precipitation type & amounts.
2023 Year in review: Warm & Dry
-Overall the year was the second warmest on record and the drought persisted.
-4th least snowy calendar year on record behind 2017, 2021 & 1923.
-Most notable weather events? Large hail this spring & the continuing drought.
Wednesday: Not sure how the day will play out. Cloud cover is the big question… if we are seeing a good amount of mixing and sunshine in the afternoon our high will be near 40°. There’s some signs that low level clouds will try to move in, and if that’s the case we’ll be relegated to the mid 30s. Stay tuned.
Patchy fog is possible on Wednesday morning and with temperatures falling to the middle 20s that means freezing fog is a possibility. Ground temperatures for most of us are near, but above freezing. Let's watch for a patchy slick spot on bridges/overpasses. Plus, you'll likely need to add a few minutes out the door to scrape your windshield.

A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck western Japan on Monday, according to the United States Geological Survey and the Japan Meteorological Agency. Tsunami warnings were canceled along coastal regions of western Japan, but advisories remain and residents have been urged to evacuate. Tsunami waves of up to 1.2 meters (4 feet) hit a number of areas along Japan's western coast.

Some of us were able to make a quick snow angel on Friday morning in Mid-Mo, but Coach Drinkwitz wins the day with a confetti angel.
First Alert: Looking at the longer range pattern, I wanted to provide a few thoughts.
Next week: Precip chances will be harder to come by with a seasonal chill to the air.
I think somewhere in the time frame of the 8-10th of January we'll watch for our next decent moisture opportunity. That's far from a guarantee, but simply an opportunity.
Overall, I think January is going to be a colder month for us. Now before you read too much into that, it's not a high bar! December has been over 7° warmer than average. I think we're looking more at seasonal levels. Precipitation chances will come and go, but I think we're going to fight more dry air than we have in recent weeks. This lines up well with my winter outlook I gave back at the beginning of November!
As for the article making its way around the internet about a "brutally cold month," you can ignore that hype. Will there be some cold pushes? Probably... It's January. However, I see nothing concerning.

We officially picked up 2" of snowfall in Columbia.
Friday Afternoon: Clearing is starting to move this way and we may see just a bit of it before sunset. You can say a big temperature difference from the places that got more sunshine and the places that didn't. I'll have the forecast at 5/9/10PM on KOMU 8 News. Midnight Update: Columbia has officially received 1” of snowfall so far.
My drive home was perfectly fine. Visibility seemed better than a few hours ago. Roads, including the overpass I went over, were just wet. Ground temps remain warm! A isolated slick spot possible

I've been asked for a "French Toast Forecast" and this is what I've got for you! You'll be able to easily eat it at a restaurant Friday morning. Use caution when commuting across bridges and overpasses.
8:10PM Thursday: The snow has arrived and is coming down at a pretty good pace. Expect reduced visibility on the roadways for the rest of the night. Slow down a bit and give yourself extra space.
A quick moving batch of snow arrives within the next few hours! Lets watch for a few slick spots on elevated surfaces Friday morning, but with warm ground temperatures any issues will be limited. Things are in good shape Friday afternoon with some sun moving in!
Thursday Afternoon: Our next batch of snow is on the way! Ground temperatures are still very warm (S/O to today's sunshine). Any impacts will be limited. I'll see you at 5/6/9/10PM on KOMU 8.

Judy just sent us this video from Moberly, MO. Big flakes are falling, but temperatures are above freezing. This snowfall could make elevated surfaces, such as a deck, briefly slushy.
I never know what’s going to fly out of my mouth on live TV. 😂
9:35PM Wednesday: Snow is coming down in Eldon as round 2 of the winter storm moves in. Roads here are a lot like they are everywhere else in mid-Missouri. Snow covered and slick.
