Quick-tips for improving your piano playing. Got any of your own? Add them below.
1. Use clusters. It sounds crazy when you play a D and a Db at the same time, but if you put a A and an E around it you’ll get a heart-wrenching beautiful A chord. The Db creates a suspended tension in the middle of it all. If you play the root note of the key in your right hand and never move it, whilst changing chords around in your left, you’ll automatically create clusters.
2. Separate your hands. If you want to add some dynamic as you progress through a song, just make sure you aren’t staying in one position on the keyboard all the way through. Keep your hands close together for smaller, intimate sections and move them further away from each other for bigger choruses and bridges. As you move your hands further apart, you’ll take up more space on the frequency spectrum which will contribute to a larger sound.
3. Don’t just settle for the default piano sound. The most beautiful pieces of music in the world will carry regardless of the sound that being being played on, but paying specific attention to the sound that you’re using can completely transform your music. Fast paced playing works better on grand pianos and upright pianos, but sustained ambient playing is perfectly suited to felt pianos.
