MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSMAN SHONTEL BROWN
At 7 pm on Sept. 10, you're invited: an OH-11 Service Academy Night at the Cleveland Public Library Hough Branch, 6530 Lexington Ave.
The Service Academy Night will feature representatives from US Service Academies, as well as our Service Academy Nomination Coordinator, who will answer questions and provide information on their institutions, and the application and nomination process.
In addition to providing important training for serving our country, the five federal service academies do not charge students for tuition or room and board. For more information on the academies, click on the link below.
The OH-11 Service Academy Night is designed for high school juniors and seniors and their families. The event is free to attend, but we ask that you register so that we can ensure we have enough space.

Students who want to attend West Point or other service academies should start preparing as soon as possible, experts say.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
Cleveland and its children deserve a better future. That’s why investing in education is essential. On Election Day, we have a critical choice, as the Cleveland Metropolitan School District aims to approve a single ballot issue that will transform our students’ future.
Here’s why I’m supporting the levy:
It will upgrade students’ reading, writing, mathematics, and social skills to better prepare them for jobs, college, and careers in fast-growing, good-paying fields. It will maintain vital mental health support services for students and their families. It will improve safety and security in and around every school facility. And it will ensure we have the quality teaching staff that our students need.
Look, I know that investing in education is hard. But the choice is clear. With the issue, students will keep key education and support programs they need to be safe and succeed in school so they can be prepared for the jobs of the future—and Cleveland’s students are our future.
This isn’t just about giving Cleveland students the investments they desperately need. It’s about public safety. It’s about jobs. It’s about opportunity and Cleveland’s long-term viability.
The choice is clear. I’ll be knocking on doors for the levy this year!

PRESS RELEASE -- Antonio Condemns Republican-Led Ballot Board Language Intended to Confuse Voters on Issue 1
COLUMBUS – Today, Senate Democratic Leader Nickie J. Antonio, wo represents West Park, condemned Republicans on the Ohio Ballot Board who voted along party lines to adopt dishonest language that will appear on the ballot in this November’s election for Issue 1, more commonly known as the “Citizens Not Politicians” redistricting constitutional amendment.
“I’m appalled by the Republican majority’s use of the Ohio Ballot Board to interfere in the democratic process and brazenly lie to the voters about the purpose of this proposal to remove politicians from the redistricting process,” said Antonio.
“Republicans in this state have stooped to an unimaginably new low. The move to formalize language that this proposal would lead to gerrymandering after the legal saga we were subject to two years ago is insulting to the activists who worked to get this issue on the ballot and the over 700,000 Ohioans who signed the petition for it. It is unconstitutional, and I hope the court sees it that way when this horrific language is inevitably brought before them. Regardless, I look forward to supporting Issue 1 to ensure that Ohio’s redistricting and representation reflects the will of the people, not the interests of politicians.”

PRESS RELEASE
Antonio Opposes Decision to Frack Under State’s Preserved Wildlife
COLUMBUS - Today, Senate Democratic Leader Nickie J. Antonio -- who represents West Park) released this statement after the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Oil and Gas Land Management Commission (OGLMC) again sold rights to drill for oil and gas under Ohio’s preserved wildlife areas.
“I’m deeply disappointed in the Oil and Gas Land Management Commission’s decision to move forward with these applications after receiving hundreds of public comments urging otherwise. The concerns shared by many Ohioans about their health and the safety of our state parks have been ignored throughout this process. Protecting Ohio's natural environment is crucial to ensuring that Ohioans have access to clean water, clear air, and a viable future.”
The OGLMC is responsible for deciding upon applications to extract oil and gas from Ohio’s state lands. The panel decided on Monday to sell 85 acres underneath Keen Wildlife Area to Houston-based EOG resources to frack in the preserved area, despite hundreds of public comments in opposition to such activity. The panel additionally voted to allow drilling to occur under Egypt Valley Wildlife Area in Belmont County; that land will go out to bid in October of this year.
In a process so wrought with controversy, ranging from environmental concerns to fraudulent letters being investigated by the attorney general’s office, it is clear that these efforts to frack under public lands are misguided at best and reckless at worst. That is why the Ohio Senate Democratic Caucus previously urged the OGLMC to reject applications to frack under Ohio’s state parks.

A newspaper by and for West Park

The West Park Times newspaper covers the West Park neighborhood of Cleveland, OH.

As change happens, we document it from our vantage point at the grassroots level.

That being said, the West Park Times publishes the truth- whatever that may be, as long as it pertains to the interest of West Park residents and our readers. Many of our readers are also contributors, so the role often goes hand-in-hand.

The West Park Times began with local journalist and West Park resident, Jessie Schoonover, who is also Treasurer of the Neighborhood and Community Media Association of Greater Cleveland, and author of several novels, short stories, and books, including “Labor of Love: A Book of Poetry,” and “1972.” It started with a helping-hand from Tremonster newspaper founder, Rich Weiss, and several other local journalists, and the newspaper grew to a trusted outlet for West Parkers to look forward to and rely upon.
