Churches often today use sound stages, choreography, light shows, and much more to keep church going.

And yet their sermons usually don't compare to simple pastors hundreds of years ago speaking without a microphone to their audience using just the Scriptures and their studies as their guides.

Inspired by Mere Meerkat's recent meme template.

A message from Elise:
Hello everybody! I wanted to hop on here and thank you all for praying for me and even financially providing for us this past week as we got doctors, travel and insurance all figured out. And thank you so much, we are so appreciative of you all! I avoided surgery and will be in a boot for the next 6 weeks (4 of those without being able to walk on it at all).

Mira has been stepping up into her role as my assistant chef quite nicely and she made us a sausage and cabbage skillet tonight and it was tasty. Please continue to pray for us as we work on changing up the family dynamic for a while. Also pray for pain management for me, proper bone alignment for optimal healing, and that I would be able to still feel/be productive.

Troy goes back to work on Monday and the kids start back the following week. They're both very excited to see all their friends again. Thank you guys again and please know how very grateful we are for you all!

Prayer Request!

Elise (host of Martyrs and Missionaries) broke her foot today while playing with the kids.

Having a broken foot is never easy. But in the case of living in Indonesia, this is not a place where handicap accessibility exists.

And we do all of our life on motorcycles (don't own a car). So there's a lot that we'll have to figure out.

But right now, the priority is Elise's foot. She will have to go to Singapore for a possible surgery, and cast (we'll know more tomorrow). We have already consulted with the Singaporean doctor.

Pray for us as we get flights and finances and everything settled. And pray for Elise who is in a lot of pain.

Pray for us to see God's plan in this unpleasant time.

Today we want to maximize comfort and minimize anything that makes us uncomfortable.

But the early church longed to suffer like Christ did and was disappointed at missed opportunities.

Legalism is often used against people who are trying to be Biblical.

But there's also no denying that legalism is a thing that often infects a believer's life and robs them of their joy in God.

Ever wondered what 200+ episodes of Church History podcasting looks like if each person/location was marked on a map to see?

Wonder no more! It looks like this.

It took way too much time to put this together but the end result looks really great on the website and was a lot of fun to see just how much history we've covered from around the world.

He is probably one of the most infamous pastors in church history. At least American history.

History has laid the weight of the Salem Witch Trials on his shoulders, fairly or not. Many know him only from this legend.

Yet he had a different ministry that made him unlike any other pastor I've seen.

In 250+ sermons revived on Revived Thoughts, I've never seen a pastor have a ministry outreach to this group of people.

Cotton Mather, the infamous pastor, would go to pirates and counsel them with the words of Christ.

He would share the good news with these prisoners.

Not the pirates you think of from the movies. The real ones. Smelly. Uneducated. Killers. The vagabonds of society.

Men who gave up sailing the proper way for a quick score. Men who sunk ships and threw people overboard.

When they were rounded up by society their deaths led to cheers among the townsfolk who were happy to see the criminals go.

But it was to that group that the famous, powerful, leader of the New England colonies would sit with. Speak with. Share the Word of God with. Give out his personal books for reading. And pray alongside them.

He'd hear their misgivings. He'd ask for forgiveness. And as they were led away to die he'd give their final sermon.

Try to imagine a big name in Christianity meeting with cartel members in a prison today. Imagine the mega-church pastor in town spending days at a time giving books from his personal collection to Neo-Nazi skinheads.

We can't picture it. But it's exactly what Cotton Mather did.

And it worked. People got saved. We will see some of the fruit of his labor in Heaven someday.

What about today?
Who are the "pirates" of society?
How is the church reaching those that most wouldn't stoop to talk to?

Will we be like Cotton Mather and stop and make the time? Or will we pass them by?

You can listen to one of those very sermons he gave on this week's Revived Thoughts.

Too often people "educate" themselves out of appreciating great men of the past.

And yet, the smartest people I have known or read from usually have a deep appreciation of history and those who came before them.

Do you know the Taiping Rebellion?

The story of a man who forced Christianity on millions of Chinese and almost overthrew the Qing Empire?

Or was it actually Christianity? For he believed in Jesus...... and that he was Jesus brother!

I can't be the only one who got confused at times reading Confessions. The part where he spends like 15 chapters describing how we lose and forget our own memories despite the fact that our brain knew we once forgot it still boggles me.

What we do...

Whether you are listening to our podcast through Apple, Spotify, Podcast Addict, or on our website, you can expect each episode to bring you a Godly sermon from the past. Joel and Troy take sermons from history and get them recorded so that they can be heard again. As sermons from hundreds of years ago are being preached again people are realizing that these old truths don’t die. And that they are as relevant and timely to us today as they were when they were first preached. Each episode starts off with Troy and Joel giving a 5-10 minute back-story of the preacher. This is followed by a sermon recorded by one of our dozens of volunteers from around the world. We have done sermons by famous preachers like Charles Spurgeon, Oswald Chambers, Jonathan Edwards, and John Knox. And less famous preachers like George Matheson, Andrew Gray, and Lemuel Haynes. These sermons are reviving history and edifying people in their faith today. Make sure to subscribe as there are new episodes out every Thursday!
