Last week I was at Microsoft in Joburg, talking with a few old friends. I got the lowdown on how intense and widespread the current round of layoffs truly is.
I know what it’s like to lose the rhythm of the 25th-of-the-month paycheck, then wake up the next day with no safety net. I lived that when I left Microsoft. I had to learn the hard way how to handle the shock of income loss.
If you are in that place right now, waiting for interviews or proofing your CV, maybe try something different. Send at least as many proposals as you send CVs. Treat your skills as a product you can market. Put yourself out there.
I remember the fear. But I also remember the first proposal that became an invoice. That moment brought immense relief and gave me the motivation to keep sending proposals, not CVs.
These layoffs may feel like an ending, but they could also be your personal catalyst. You might not have chosen entrepreneurship, but if that door has opened, you now have a chance to test the market, to serve a client directly, and to build on your terms.
This is why I started this particular Substack series: to help people manage the transition from corporate to entrepreneurship. Check it out and let me know what you think. Link in the comments.
