How I celebrated Juneteenth 2024: This painting was inspired by a story one of my siblings told me about traveling to Ghana, and taking a tour there. The title "Slave Fort of West Africa" is based on a healing ceremony that was conducted by the tour guide and a group of travelers, recognizing the suffering of of the slave trade, as Juneteenth Day Celebrations and a national holiday were conducted, lest we forget why Juneteenth is an essential part of American history. This room inside the slave fort had one little window of air and light for the imprisoned slaves! No matter how political forces try to erase or whitewash those memories, they live on in the hearts of minds of their descendants from the African Diaspora, comparable with the holocaust encounter by European Jews and others during World War II. Never forget!

"The Basquiat Effect" was part of my illustrated lecture at the Peekskill Museum this past February 2024 for their Black History Month Celebration. The topic, "Renaissance Men and Women-Past and Present," was a dive into the relationship between artists, and THEIR CHAMPIONS! Sometimes a gallerist, another artist (Paul Gaugin, Roommate to Vincent Van Gogh), sometimes a dealer (Paul Durand-Ruel in Paris promoting the first "Impressionists"), sometimes its a patron (Lorenzo de Medici sponsoring a young Leonardo Da Vinci), and sometimes it's the Church or other institution, and sometimes it's a collector (Chester Dale hosting Pierre Matisse and Salvador Dali in America), who helps them keep body and soul together, while creating work. Who is building the next generation of collectors for Peekskill artists? When artist start really banding together for Peekskill (not just joining a group as a member, and expecting results to automatically happen), then the "Peekskill Brand," will show how "all boats rise," when we promote Peekskill as an innovative and diverse collection of artist. Are promoting Peekskill or ourselves? All successful art movements have occurred when artists starting meeting, talking, finding common ground in a common place (like a salon, a tavern, a restaurant, a museum/gallery space. We are a City, not a "Town."

Interdisciplinary Artist Steven A. Worthy celebrates "Peekskill, The Paris of Westchester" and its Renaissance as a leader in culture and cooperation between artists, business and government like no other in the Hudson River Valley. He celebrated 2024 Black History Month with a painting of Sun River Health Clinic's founder, Rev. Jeannette Phillips along with eight artists, each spelling out the letters P-E-E-K-S-K-I-L-L.

It was truly an honor to be included in the February 2024 Black History Month Celebration and Art Exhibition at Sun River Health Clinic in my adopted hometown of Peekskill, New York! All nine "Graffiti Artists" (a first for me) honored the clinic's founder, the Reverend Jeannette Phillips, and her name is on the front marquee as you enter. Each artist was given a letter, spelling out "PEEKSKILL," and was given a word to represent the character of Ms. Phillips. Thanks to Arts10566 Founder Wilfredo Morel and Curator Coulter Young for this special opportunity! The work is my largest so far at 40" x 30", and is acrylic on canvas. Most of my work honors the work of those who have made a positive impact on the world, with a few "villains" thrown in for perspective. For more info, you can contact me at [email protected] if you want to honor someone you know and/or respect

"The Social Fabric No. 1" (C)2024 by Steven A. Worthy (work on paper 8 1/2" x 11"-prints available)

More and more, I realize how delicate human relationships are to "The Social Fabric." "We must live together as brothers or perish together as fools." Martin Luther King Jr.. If we just pause, then away from our electronic devices for a few minutes, and consider how lucky, blessed and fortunate we are to be living in this (sometimes, and sometimes not) United States, then act on it, the world today would be a far different place. Are you satisfied where you are, or do you know we have the potential to live what we want, preach and teach others?

You are all cordially invited to support programs at the Peekskill Museum for my discussion for Black History Month on February 25th, 2024 at 3 pm! You hear the word "Renaissance" thrown around lately, from Beyonce to art exhibitions and fashion runways. The meaning from Italian is "rebirth," and a return to ages of innocence and freshness of spirit, imitating the coming of Spring every year. You might have a bit of it yourselves, so let's keep this beautiful museum with dedicated volunteers thriving, and meet old and new friends in the spacious rooms. Peekskill rides again, and all boats rise, when we support Peekskill! Refreshment delights will be served!

A great documentary is on YouTube if you can't make it to the Ossining Library at 7 pm tonight! Julius Rosenwald, a contemporary of both Samuel H. Kress and Rush H. Kress, was a unique philanthropist. as head of Sears and Roebuck, he funded over 5,000 African American schools in the South during segregationist Jim Crow days among the legendary "southern hospitality" oxymoron!

For Black History Month 2024, I will be presenting "The Basquiat Effect," at a couple of locations in Westchester. This is the first, and I hope you can make it. Check here for more announcements as they are scheduled. Yes, Jean-Michel Basquiat visited Ossining as a young man, as my father was friends with his father Gerard, and we drew together at 145 Charter Circle in Ossining during the 1960s. My talk includes this icident and his effect today on other artists and the art scene in general!

Good leaders know who to utilize the talents and abilities of their constituents, so that "ALL BOATS RISE," and everyone in the society, top to bottom, eventually benefits. It takes vision, it takes empathy, and it takes courage, even if the majority think they know better only because they are the majority. We find out more and more, that real values are the ones that keep the peace, that try to feed and house everyone, that gives everyone a chance to prove what they can do, with respect, dignity, and care. Impossible and hypocritical values only backfire and hurt us in the end. Remember "Prohibition?" What a destructive experiment, that would have failed if one state tried it out, instead of forcing it upon an entire nation! Like the Pete Seeger song, "When Will We Ever Learn?"

"Awakening In The Cave" (C) 2023 by Steven A. Worthy 36" x 24" Acrylic, Ink & Graphite on Canvas. The "first interactive screen" began long ago and now we hold images on devices small enough to fit into our hand. Studying "Plato's cave" in college was "Greek to me" at first, but as they say, "a picture is worth a thousand words." Enjoy!

Thank you for the opportunity of sharing my art practice with you all this past year. Most of you know me as a musical artist, but my first love was art since kindergarten, until a junior high school art teacher derailed me with derogatory comments. Since 2015 I have returned to my first love of creativity, and placed art with collectors like the Basquiat Family Estate, Andre Leon Talley, Anna Wintour and Charles F. Dolan. For more info, reach out at [email protected] and you can see more artwork at instagram.com/worthy.steve. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year blessings to all! (Tribute to Mick Jagger & Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones. My first song performed live with my high school band, "The Reptiles," was "Paint It Black!" How's that for poetic irony?)

Art, Fashion, Sports and Tech titans all came together at Art Basel Miami, according to the Hollywood Reporter this year! Where would the art world be without collectors?

Marc Glimcher, one of the world’s most powerful art dealers, was seen at Art Basel Miami Beach with Jeff Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez.
