Kelly Egan: Editor-in-Chief of Lancer Spirit Takes Home NH Journalist of the Year Award.
“When senior Kelly Egan heard she was named Journalist of the Year for NH, she was “shocked.”

“I didn’t even know how I did it,” Egan said. “It didn’t feel real.”

Egan has been on The Lancer Spirit staff since she was a sophomore. She’s been a reporter, then the A&E editor and currently she is the Editor-in-Chief of the student news publication.

Being on staff has pushed Egan to “grow as a writer and person.” In her job as Editor-in-Chief, she not only has to write the tough stories, but she also has to help other editors and reporters with their writing.

“Balancing being a mentor to others while working on my own writing has helped me grow,” Egan said. “Writing about hard topics has helped me learn how to navigate tough conversations.”

Having those moments not only make her better, but has made her ”become a better writer.”

“It breaks you down and builds yo

u up, and you have to try try again,” Egan said.

Egan credits her adviser Mary DeWinkleer as the one who “pushed” her to apply in the first place.

“I wouldn’t have applied if it wasn’t for [Dewinkeleer’s] motivation and her believing in me,” Egan said.

DeWinkeleer is “so proud” of all Egan has accomplished since having her for the first time when she was a sophomore.

“I knew when I first met Kelly that she was special and had a lot of talent,” DeWinkeleer said. “When she was a junior, I encouraged her to apply to the Al Neuharth Free Spirit Journalism Award, and she ended up getting that and representing N.H. last summer in Washington, D.C.”

It made sense to DeWinkeleer to then encourage Egan to apply to the Journalism Education Association Journalist of the Year during her senior year.”

LSO Video: Graduates walk the stage during 2024 Adult Ed. ceremony
The Adult Education Class of 2024 proudly graduates after a year of hard work and dedication they put to setting their goals.
“The Adult Education graduation is a very emotional event for friends and family members because all of their students went get recognized for their hard work. The Adult Ed. class of 2024 had their graduation ceremony on Fri. May 31.

Graduate Ryhan Kelley expresses how the Adult Education Program was very emotional, but an “amazing thing to accomplish.”

“Adult Education was one of the biggest mental decisions I made through high school,” Kelley said. “The hours of work in the classroom and outside were long and challenging.”

At times, Kelley felt “defeated” and thought that she would not have been able to attend her graduation.

“I didn’t believe I was going to make it to graduation and spent days feeling defeated while trying to complete work,” Kelley said.

Kelley knows it was worth the wait because of the “ultimate satisfaction” she got out of this day.

“In the end, the feeling of accomplishing graduating was a greater feeling and was worth the hard work,” Kelley said.”

Survey says…let teachers and students connect
Teachers should be permitted to give out surveys to students
“At the beginning of the school year, teachers are introduced to numerous students and are expected to know them and understand their needs. The best way to get to know them quickly is by giving them questionnaires. But unfortunately, these are considered to be “surveys” which according to NH RSA 186: 11, IX-d bill, is not allowed.

Surveys are a quick and easy way to ask all the questions teachers feel are important to make the students comfortable with them and for them to understand the child’s needs. Teachers have been using this strategy for years.

In the past couple of years, these simple questionnaires have become huge dilemmas, as parents think it’s crossing the line. On September 16, 2017, RSA 186: 11, IX-d was enacted to regulate surveys and questionnaires given by teachers to students. My question is: if these surveys were okay before, why aren’t they now?

The law directly states, “…‘non-academic survey or questionnaire’ means surveys, questionnaires, or other documents designed to elicit information about a student’s social behavior, family life, religion, politics, sexual orientation, sexual activity, drug use, or any other information not related to a student’s academics.” Teachers aren’t allowed to ask their students anything unrelated to school–even their favorite color. There is nothing wrong with a teacher knowing my favorite color is pink.

Social behavior over the years has changed drastically. This generation has grown up drawn to our electronics and losing proper social relationships. The isolation that COVID-19 put so many of us through during such an important time in our social growth has put us further behind, leaving us to play catch up. This is the time where students should get to know one another and our teachers to practice social skills and make connections. A quick way to achieve this is through questionnaires and/or surveys because they allow for a direct way for students to tell their teachers everything they feel they should know to have the best school experience possible.”

Musical Motivation
Students should be permitted to use headphones to listen to music

You’re sitting in your classroom. You have an essay that’s due today, but the only thing you can focus with the sounds of tapping computer keys, pens clicking, and the kid sitting next to you smacking their gum in their mouth. The solution? Your trusty earbuds. Right as you press play on your music, you feel a tap on your shoulder. Pulling your headphones out, you turn and look over your shoulder to see your teacher towering over you. Your head drops in defeat as you put your airpod back in its case and turn your attention back onto your work.

It’s almost natural to have the feeling of a small speaker in your ear nowadays. Your music is most always continuously playing whether you drown it out or not. If you’re paying attention what does it matter if you’re listening to music, it doesn’t negatively affect anyone or pull attention away from the lesson. So why are schools so against earbuds?

Yes, it can be frustrating when trying to talk to someone and they’re just not fully listening. Especially when having to back-track and explain everything once again or multiple times in a teacher’s case, and not everyone’s attention span is the same. Some people can use music as background noise, whereas others might give it their full attention, not focusing on what is going on around them. But being able to listen to music has a lot of benefits.

According to the National University, listening to music allows both hemispheres of the brain to maximize learning intake and improve your memory by using both the left and right side of the brain.”

Varsity Softball Team Dominates Regular Season, Eyes Playoff Run
“As the softball team moves on to playoffs, they need to get ready for whatever comes their way. From getting into the right mindset, to remembering what went well this year they feel they are ready. After finishing first in division one with a 17-2 record they are going into the playoffs as the “team to beat.”

“I think the season went so well because the whole team came in with the same goal. It also helps that we get along so well,” senior captain Zoey Nelson said.

Along with having the same goals and getting close with one another, success is also about knowing the amount of talent you have on your team.

“I think we have a really good squad this year, we have a lot of talent on the team,” sophomore team member Jen Raza said.”

Legacy fight puts UFC Heavyweight divison on hold
“While Jon Jones is undoubtedly one of the goats of the say what this stands for [UFC] Ultimate Fighting Championship, he has put his legacy in the way of the entire heavyweight division for two years to fight Stipe Miocic, who hasn’t fought since 2021 where he lost to Francis Ngannou.

I’m not saying Miocic is a pushover, cause he’s anything but. He’s arguably the greatest heavyweight ever and has the most title defenses of anyone the division has ever seen, but that was many years ago. He is now pushing 41 as a retired fighter, while Jones has still yet to lose his step in the UFC even with his inactivity.

When I first heard that Jones was still on track to fight Stipe, I was surprised. I thought that the interim champ, Tom Aspinall, was the obvious first choice. However, I think this is where Jon Jones’ ego and legacy take over. Wanting a fight that would hopefully give him a large sum of money and send him off into retirement with a win over an all time great opponent.”

Honoring Lost Heroes
Londonderry celebrates their lost heroes
“Memorial day is a day that comes every year. To some, it may not seem important, or anything more than the day off from school and for the parade. For 155 years since 1868 the United States has set aside the last Monday of May to honor those who went above and beyond for our country and died in the line of duty. It may seem like a mute point, just calling up names from times long past and speaking on their sacrifice. However, even in the modern day, it is still important to acknowledge that bravery and courage that inspired so many people to die for the freedoms that we as Americans are proud to represent.” More on LSO.

Tri-M welcomes new inductees
“As the Tri-M Music Honors Society states in the program guidelines they aim to “inspire music participation, create enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulate a desire to render service, and promote leadership in the music students of secondary schools.” On May 23, advisor Serge Beaulieu held their annual induction ceremony, welcoming in 25 new members who have strived all year to prove that they fit the high expectations of academic achievement, leadership, service, character, and musical participation that is expected off all those who become members of the Londonderry chapter of the Tri-M Music Honors Society.”

Lancers “speak up” for third year

“Health teacher Holly Lafore organized a mental health day for LHS students on May 24 2024. This day is curated to give kids a break from classes and to learn more about the importance of mental health.

“This event includes all LHS students who will rotate with their class through three different areas,” Lafore said. “The areas include our guest speakers, The Up Team, community vendors along with school clubs for local resources, comfort animals and a variety of activities for students to participate in on the track.”

This is the third year of the event. It all started back when LHS when 2022 graduate Sage Matzker had the idea for the event.

“She had a vision to bring the student body together to create a safe place and allow for discussions and activities to promote student’s mental health,” Lafore said.

Since this event first happened in 2022, it has grown and expanded.

“We have continued this amazing event that Sage began and have expanded it to a student’s total wellness,” Lafore said.”

Standing strong for those who’ve fallen
“The Blue and Purple Star Lancers held a “ceremony of the fallen soldiers” on April 16 to honor LHS alum who died while serving as an active member of an armed forces unit. It was also an opportunity to show support for Lancer families who have lost a loved one.

Senior and BSL member Hope Tessier is glad to help organize this event for these families.

“The BSL is a great community of people who all came together to put on a ceremony for the fallen soldiers of our school and their families,” Tessier said.

Tessier believes that it is important for this club to host this ceremony because of the impact it makes on the people.

“This sacrifice should be honored and remembered, and I’m glad the BSL was able to do that for them,” Tessier said.

Tessier was effected by the emotions she felt during the ceremony, but also the impact the ceremony had on the fallen soldiers’ families.

“During the ceremony, I felt very heavy-hearted, seeing the relatives of the fallen soldiers mourn their loved ones was extremely difficult,” Tessier said. “But the fact that they appreciated the BSL so much for putting the ceremony on made me very glad we decided to do it.”

Junior Purple Star Bailey Clevenger knows that the ceremony was a good experience because we put it on for alumni.”

Band seniors reflect on their final concert as members of LHS’ music department
“As the school year comes to an end, the seniors of the music department finish their final concert at LHS. Many of the seniors have been a part of the band since their freshman year, becoming a big part of their high school careers.

“I joined the marching band my freshman year but I was a part of the music program in middle school,” senior Sam Parisi said. “I kind of hated it but I got pushed into joining here and I’m glad that I did.”

While being able to practice music on a daily basis, being a part of the band also allowed many students to go on trips they would have never had the opportunity to go on otherwise.

“Some of my favorite memories from being in band are definitely the trips,” senior Genevieve Greene said. “I never thought that I would be able to travel to Disney or London during my high school years, but through the band I had a chance to experience all the activities Mr. Beaulieu had planned for us.”

Even for students that hadn’t been a part of the band for all four years like senior Jasmyn Johnson, being a member still had a large impact on their high school experience.

“I’m happy that I got to have the experience of being in the band this year because it not only allowed me to make friends but also was a great experience,” Johnson said. “I was so scared at first because I didn’t know many people in my trumpet section but I had other friends in other sections that made starting out a little better.”

Each senior has had different experiences from being a part of the band which made an impact on them.”

Going “Over the Edge” for Winter Percussion
“Music director Serge Beaulieu will be going “over the edge” with percussion director Keith Veale and senior Sam Parisi in order to raise money for the indoor winter percussion ensemble. This fundraiser is run by United Way who set up the equipment on the Brady Sullivan Tower for groups in NH fundraising to repel off the side of the building with a rock climbing rig.

“There’s a lot of different organizations and a lot of companies will have a team go and raise money for cancer or a memorial scholarship. We’re just one of 50 or 60 different groups,” Beaulieu said.

This is the third time the music department has participated in this fundraiser, with Beaulieu repelling down the building during his first year.

“It was super scary [the first time], especially getting up on top of the building,” Beaulieu said. “I’m excited this time. It was funny because I was really scared and I went down really fast but when I got to the bottom I was like ‘it was fun, I want to do it again.’ I think this time around I’m going to enjoy it a little bit more.”

Beaulieu will be joined in repelling off the building by Parisi who will gain a whole new experience from this event.

“I have no idea what I’m doing, which is a little terrifying but also I think is going to be a good experience,” Parisi said.

This fundraiser is important to Parisi since he wants to do “all he can” to support the music department.”

Documenting an extraordinary season; An LHS robotics season gallery
“Throughout the 2024 season, the LHS Robotics Team, otherwise known as Team 1058 of the First Robotics Competition, has done very well when it comes to competition and development of the team’s innovations. With new additions like a “swerve” drive system and an incredibly ergonomic style of operation, the team has created one of the most competitive robots that the team has seen in its 23 years of competing with First. With an additional victory to add to the teams history this year, this gallery celebrates some of the best moments from the season, along with a display of the team’s synergy when it comes to the activity they all love.”

Meet your Mr. LHS 2024
“LHS’s sacred tradition of senior boys dancing on a stage with shiny costumes and breathtaking talents in front of the entire student body has graced the school once again. After an eventful night filled with acts from the Mr. LHS contestants, and a very difficult decision from the judges, meet your 2024 Mr. LHS, Charlie Lantz.

Lantz took the floor on the night of Thurs Apr. 18 and swept the judges and the audience off their feet with his act by performing “My Way” by Frank Sinatra.

“A lot of time went into my act. I can’t thank Graycie Farnsworth and Liv LaBranche enough for choreographing,” Lantz said. “Also Evelyn Godbout and Ava Sampson. They came in on their Friday nights to help me look less stupid on stage and I’m extremely grateful to them.”

Beforehand, Lantz had his act together and choreographed and even had a few surprise elements that he came up with like starting his song from the top of the audience.”

Boston’s dominance against Toronto continues
“The two greatest words in sports history: game 7.

When the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs meet in the playoffs, the series always seems to go to 7 games, and this year was no different. For me, I thought this might be the year the Bruins go down.

While I am usually one for “hot takes,” I think this opinion had a lot of reason behind it. Since the Bruins were 0-5 in series clinching games, their stats didn’t help their case at all.

I felt that Toronto had more momentum coming back to Boston after coming back from a 3-1 deficit. This will usually make a team much more confident, and with as hot as their goalie (Joseph Woll) was, I was sure the Bruins would send their fans home disappointed in back to back years.

However, after the start of the game, and watching the first period, my prediction changed. I felt the Bruins had the stronger opening period, and when that happens, it seems to be a winning formula for Boston.”

LHS loses the signal
Students and Staff computers are disconnecting from the internet.
“It’s time to finally answer the age-old question, is it possible to survive without the internet? Due to an update to Windows that Sophos, the school’s anti-virus software, incorrectly pinged as a virus, large swaths of the school have been kicked off the internet as Sophos places their computers in a digital time out. This is part of a protocol in the system that will purposefully disconnect a computer from the internet if Sophos picks up a virus to quarantine it from the rest of the network. This is in an effort to prevent any potential virus from spreading to the rest of the network. As of yet, The IT department has found no evidence of any actual virus released into the network so far. While Sophos disconnected students and staff from the internet on this scale was never anticipated, currently, it would appear to be merely the result of the school’s anti-virus software being a little too hypervigilant in its attempt to protect student data and the school’s networks.”

New Pass System Starts at LHS
“By now most students are familiar with the new Securly pass system. Since its implementation here at the high school it has been met with a large amount of student pushback, many unhappy with the change.

The idea of switching over to a digital hall pass system has been in the works since last spring in order to address the disorganization that had pervaded the pass systems in use for ages, and has just come to fruition through the collaboration of LHS Principal Rick Barnes and library media specialist Brayall.

“[Securly] provides us with a consistent method that we can say we expect all staff and students to use versus the umpteen different methods that were out there,” said Barnes. “Students are going to be moving about the building, there is going to be a segment of the school’s population in the hallways at any given time. We need to know where they are, or at least where they said they were going. So if we have to send someone looking for them [in an emergency] they’ll know where to go. They’re not going to have to start from one end of the building and go to the other.”

Securly Pass is one of many online programs owned by parent company Securly. Securly offers many services to schools, and brands themselves on their website as “The Student Safe Company” and “a market leader in K-12 safety and wellness” The Securely pass system was originally known as EHall, before it was bought out by Securely and rebranded into the system that it is today. Several options were considered for a digital pass system, such as Minga and SmartPass which was also a strong contender.”
