It's been almost a full year since I've posted any cross-seasonal photography, so why not upload another one of my favorites:
Canon-Mac Stadium!

Yes this is a repeat post, but I've gained over 1,000 followers since I last posted this, so all you new-comers, welcome to photography unlike you've ever seen before!

A very popular spot to watch the Canonsburg 4th of July fireworks, Canon-Mac Stadium (or field?) is home to the Canon-Mac school district in Canonsburg, PA.

What you're seeing here are 4 separate drone photos, each taken ~3 months apart, and stitched together in a composite that showcases all four season in a single image of the same location, from the same exact spot in the sky!

The Aurora Borealis makes an extremely rare visit over the skies of Downtown Washington, PA (as well as Canonsburg Lake).

As many of you have seen cell phone pictures of the beautiful Aurora that struck the skies over Washington County on Thursday night, allow me to show you the capabilities of professional photography.

Fun science facts (summarized for simplicity):
- Green is produced by charged particles from the sun interacting with oxygen molecules in the upper atmosphere.
- Red/Purple is produced by the interaction of nitrogen molecules.

Tonight's game might be delayed, but if I were to ever have the opportunity to watch or broadcast it from this view?? For now, photos will do.

Two posts in one day?! (I had a big contract shoot yesterday, so I missed yesterday's post. Because of this, you get TWO today!)

FOCAL LENGTH is the DISTANCE BETWEEN THE LENS AND THE IMAGE SENSOR, when the subject is in the sharpest focus, measured in millimeters (mm). This plays a key role in how your photos look in your composition.

Below is an extraordinarily BASIC BREAKDOWN of how focal length can determine how your images look. I will not touch on lenses specifically, because that introduces a lot of more advanced considerations like chromatic aberration, barrel distortion, vignetting, sharpness, flare, ghosting, and a whole host of other variables. I'm also not accounting for crop factor.

25mm: When you shoot at 25mm, you capture a wide view, perfect for showing a lot of the city at once. This is best done at a distance, because shooting too close introduces too much distortion.

100mm: At 100mm, your subjects look more natural. (50mm and 85mm are considered most natural for portraits) You can focus on details without losing the context of the surroundings.

400mm: Finally, at 400mm, you can zoom in on specific features, isolating subjects from all other distractions.

Most SMARTPHONES these days come with zoom features labeled as 0.5x, 1x, 2x, and even up to 10x or more. This simply multiplies your phone's native focal length—typically around 50mm—by those factors, resulting in effective focal lengths of 25mm, 50mm, 100mm, and 1,000mm, respectively.

The more you know!

Be sure to give me a vote if you found any of this helpful!

We previously touched on how photography literally translates to 'Light Writing,' which involves a blend of cool science and physics stuff, so now we're gonna focus on the artistic side of photography.

Let's talk about COMPOSITION.

The goal of your photograph is simple: Create a visually pleasing work of art. You achieve this by many ways, but none are as crucial than composition.

Composition refers to how you frame your subject(s) and where you position the various elements within your shot.

Often, you may find that certain objects in your frame are immovable (hello, towering skyscrapers!). This is where your creativity comes into play. You need to think outside the box to minimize visual distractions, create 'leading lines,' and use color strategically to guide the viewer's attention—the possibilities are endless.

In the images below, composition was a primary consideration when capturing the drone shots. For the sunset photograph, I aimed to maintain ample negative space in the sky to highlight the beautiful color transitions and the way the clouds reflect different hues.

In the black and white image, the focus is on the couple atop the Ferris Wheel, gazing down at the crowd below. Their dark silhouette contrasts sharply with the lighter tones of the gravel path. The Ferris Wheel itself is much brighter than the rest of the scene and is the only element in sharp focus.

All of these different elements come together to draw your eye exactly where I want it.

Series 1 of 3: Mastering the Fundamentals

Instead of splurging on ads and chasing quick votes based solely on popularity, I’m here to EARN your trust and support.

This week, I’ll show you why I believe I should be named Washington County’s Best Photographer.

The short answer? As Zuko says, “I understand.”

So, what is it that I understand?

Photography is so much more than just snapping pictures of faces or capturing sunsets where the sky does all the work. It’s about diving deeper.

Today’s Lesson: Understanding Light

At its core, photography is all about light.

PHOTO means LIGHT
GRAPH means WRITE
Y indicates THE STATE OR CONDITION OF

So, PHOTOGRAPHY literally means: "Writing the Condition of Light" or just "Writing with Light" for short.

Your camera is simply a box that captures light. Even the most basic camera can create stunning works of art if you know how to use it.

A perfect example of this is a long exposure photo. When the shutter stays open longer, it allows light to enter the sensor and create beautiful trails and patterns over time.

Photography isn’t just about clicking the shutter; it’s about understanding how light works to transform an image into something extraordinary.

Stay tuned for more insights, and don’t forget to VOTE to show your support!

Allegheny Commons Park - Pittsburgh, PA

Photographed on a hot, summer day, (we've had plenty of them this year) this was shot between the two foot bridges at Allegheny Commons Park. This small little body of water is known as Lake Elizabeth, and this beautiful park is a stone's throw away from the National Aviary! (Not shown, but it's to the left of this angle)

When you're photographing scenes in direct sunlight, it's vital to maintain a higher dynamic range to keep detail in the sky, as well as detail in the trees. Harsh sunlight creates a sharp contrast in shadow areas, so post-processing is a must to create something more natural, seen as if you were actually there.

Utilizing the same technique I taught myself to photograph and perfectly align cross-seasonal aerial photography, I present:

Trinity Middle School Spring 2022 vs Summer 2024

As an alumni of Trinity School District in Washington, PA, I feel a mix of emotions when seeing the school I attended be transformed so much. It's cool to see the evolution, but also hard not to be jealous, but it's mostly cool.

I remember being in science class in 7th grade and watching those tennis courts (top left) being built right outside our room. I remember having gym class outside and utilizing them in 8th grade, and now they're gone already. ("Moved" to the Trinity West Elementary School a mile away)

There's an entirely new building, an entirely new sports facility, expanded parking, and a new area for kids to play for recess. (That latter of which isn't seen from this angle.)

As you can see from these photos, all of the above changes happened in less than 3 years. So crazy to see!

If you're on Desktop, use the arrow keys left on your keyboard to swap between the two pictures to see how perfectly these are lined up despite being taken years apart!

One of this evening's giant rainbows over the great city of Pittsburgh. There were several of them that kept appearing and disappearing thinking they were Harry Houdini or something.

I have tried and tried again to capture a rainbow over the city this entire summer, and every attempt failed. I know the signs when one might form, everything from the angle of the sun, how much direct sunlight is shining at active rain, and a few more factors.

It kept raining far too heavily to fly the drone, and it was very, very frustrating sitting there waiting for the rain to die down enough to safely fly with that expensive machine. But, the patience finally paid off when a break in the rain revealed itself, and I took to the skies.

Series - Washington County Fair 3/3

We'll close this short series off with one of my favorite photos I took last week.

The skies above give off a vibrant array of hues behind last weekend's The Washington County Agricultural Fair, Inc.. I wanted to get the drone a little lower to the ground (without being directly over people) to show more of the rides. The final edit here is intentionally underexposed a bit because I want the viewer's eye to travel around the photo and not get too distracted by any one point of visual interest.

I hope you all enjoyed this series, and based on the positive feedback and shares that this series has had all weekend, I'll post more photos in a series in the near future!

Until then, See Differently.

Series - Washington County Fair 2/3

Doing something a little different here. Well, if you've been following my page for a long time, this won't be so different.

Modern tilt shift photography mimics an older style of film making and photography where a specialized lens was able to be rotated and tlit the focal plane. For reference, this photo is a normal focal plane. Horizontal.

A regular lens can only have its focal plane horizontally, but the tilt shift can go vertical ways, and slantways, and longways, and backways… And frontways? And squareways, and any other ways that you can think of. It can take you to any room in the whole factory just by pressing one of these buttons.

Wait...that's a Wonkavator. But you get the idea!

A shallow depth of field (your "in focus" area) is most noticeable on longer focal lengths such that of telephoto lenses, as well as wider apertures such that of prime lenses. A physical tilt shift lens allows you to have the best of both worlds. No matter how close or far away your subject is, no matter your aperture setting, the foreground and background will always be dramatically out of focus.

Now, why did I say all of that? Because,

combine this with an overhead shot like from a drone, and bam! You get the illusion of a miniature setting!

I should also add that this effect is achieved using modern versions of Photoshop VERY easily, which is why I seldom do it. I prefer photography that is more challenging, like balancing dynamic range or taking aerial shots at night. Although, just because something is too easy, that doesn't mean it doesn't look cool.

See yinz tomorrow for the final post in this series!

As you can see wid'em eyeballs of yers, the sun is hangin' aut behind dem hills back'air. Jus' chillin'.

The 1st of 3 of my favorite drone photos from the fair last week. A labeled series means I'll upload one post DAILY until the end of the series. What does that mean for you?
Like and Comment on them to be sure the algorithm overlords show you my content more often!

During the The Washington County Agricultural Fair, Inc. last week, I had a few opportunities to get the drone up in the air, most often to take sunset and twilight photos since those are more challenging to get right, and I like me a challenge!

I wanted to showcase the fair as a whole, from the rides, to the grand stands, to the food trucks and vendors.

I love to use photos like this as an example when I'm teaching photography. The compositional rule of thirds, although not always followed, creates a visually striking element to your photo! (The sky was purposely composed to take up the top third of the image)

Until tomorrow, See Differently 'N at!

~ Pittsburgh Steelers Preseason Aerial Photography ~

This is a photo I've waited YEARS to capture!!!!

For the past several years, I've been eagerly anticipating the opportunity to fly my drone and capture photography during a Steelers game. However, this little thing called "The Law" and "Restricted Airspace" always prevented me from doing so. Who ever heard of those things? Haha

For real though. In the past when I've wanted to shoot a preseason game, that darn Pittsburgh weather always reared its ugly face. Get outta here stupid rain. Except when we need you. Then you can stay. Until we're annoyed with you. Then you can leave.

Two weeks ago, I FINALLY flew my drone around the beautiful stadium of Heinz Field (It'll always be Heinz Field, DON'T @ ME) during the first preseason game of the Pittsburgh Steelers 2024-2025 season!

In this flight, while maintaining conscious and continuous efforts to not traverse over the stadium itself, (VERY BIG NO-NO even if there are no TFR's in place) I took several photos during golden and twilight hours. This is one of my favorite ones from that evening's batch.

I wanted to capture as much of the city as possible, including its bridges and stadiums, all in one. I wanted to showcase it all under the golden hues from the sun setting behind me.

After all that behind-the-scenes tidbits, I'll now let the photo speak for itself. And as the stadium voice guy always says, "And that's a Pittsburgh Steelers....FIIIIIIRRRRRRRRSST DOOOWWN!"
