There is a stigma around career breaks. It’s why I was terrified to make the choice to leave my job as a TV producer 8 years ago.

I LOVED my job. But being a morning show producer didn’t match up with the kind of motherhood journey I wanted.

👉So I took a career break. I stayed home with my kids for many years and I don’t regret that choice for a second.

⭐️Still, even though I wanted to take the career break, I remember feeling embarrassed when I started updating my resume. I even fudged some of the dates to make the gap look a little shorter.

And when I went to update my LinkedIn profile 3 years ago, I had no idea what to do with that gap.

👉I was nervous it would impact my ability to get back into the working world.

⭐️But it didn’t. In fact, I’ve found more professional success post career break.

And LinkedIn is recognizing the career breaks shouldn’t matter and they don’t matter. Now you can share those gaps proudly with LinkedIn’s new features!

Many of us moms have some sort of resume gap… don’t let that stop you for living your dreams!

The career break doesn’t matter… it those moments with your kids do!

⭐️The gap used to hold me back… now it’s what’s pushing me forward.

What’s something that’s holding you back? Comment ⬇️

After learning how to tap into my story (thank you and ) and my passion to merge our personal lives and professional lives into one, and make it possible to be a parent AND professional, I’m excited to sure I’ll be giving a TedX talk on this subject!

⭐️That said, I need YOUR help. I have to pick a headshot for the website.

I can’t decide. Which do you like best?

1, 2, 3, or 4? Drop your answer ⬇️ please!!

You’re never going to be perfect.

Neither am I. But sometimes done is better than perfect.

⭐️I almost didn’t share this. I didn’t want to bring attention to my mistake.

💭But I can’t stop thinking about it; wondering what people will think. So I’m owning it.

I recently posted a reel. Days after it went up, I noticed a typo.

⌨️For some, a typo may not be a big deal. For me, a journalist and publicist who is supposed to catch them, it feels huge.

🤔I know the difference between you’re and your. I read over my caption and the video text many times.

I still made the mistake. And guess what happened?!

✨The reel still got tons of views
✨The reel got shares
✨The reel got saves
✨ The reel got likes and comments

And not one person has mentioned the mistake — which tells me most people probably haven’t noticed.

Why am I drawing attention to this?

⭐️Because sometimes mistakes happen (even if you KNOW the correct answer or way to do it).⭐️

And that’s OK. We are humans not computers. We will make mistakes.

‼️It’s how we handle those mistakes that show our true characters.

I’ll admit I’m really hard on myself when I make a mistake. I don’t take criticism well. And it used to impact how I responded to others.

✨Now I take a breath and recognize mistakes are inevitable. And it’s important to KINDLY point them out when necessary. We don’t need to make others feel bad for a mistake.

👉My initial reaction to this typo was to remove the reel and put a new one up. Instead, I’m owning the mistake, recognizing these things will happen, being kind to myself for making the mistake and moving on.

Because even with the typo—the content and information is good.

🗞 I’m not the only one who makes mistakes. The New York Times has a corrections editor… someone dedicated to fixing all the mistakes that are made in their news coverage.

Mistakes are normal & will happen. Make it right. Move on.

Drop a 💕 if you needed this reminder today! ⬇️

After this week of snow days and constant juggles between work and kids… the fact there is a new movie for us to watch is definitely welcomed news.

🎥We’ve run out of new movies and shows… so this really did make my day!

It also means I have a new babysitter in town 😂

Seriously though, what do you watch with your kids?!

Comment below with ideas! ⬇️

Let’s not forget, kids are like Petri dishes, especially in the winter. Always have been, always will be!

But now those sneezes and sniffles bring out SO much anxiety. 🤧

Any other parents feel like they go full on crazy mode any time their kid sneezes or coughs?!

Please tell me I’m not the only one who goes into panic mode over a sniffle!! ⬇️

🚨The local news doesn’t take a break between Christmas and New Years!🚨

This blurry picture is our New Years Eve photo ringing in 2013.

I was producing the morning show at ABC and I had to be at work at 11:00pm on December 31st.

I wanted that midnight kiss from my husband, so he came to work with me. We ate leftover homemade key lime pie, he sat with me while I started building my show and at midnight he indulged me with this picture.

Then he went home to go to sleep… and I continued with my work day.

I’m telling you this because:
✨the local news doesn’t take a holiday vacation
✨there are people working on Christmas AND New Years
✨vacation time is based on seniority meaning it’s usually the newer producers and reporters putting on these shows… and they are looking to prove themselves

🎉What does this mean for you?🎉

If you have a great story, that will add value, reach out to your local station.

📺 Many of the stories that air during this time are repeated over and over again. If you can provide something new, that will drive views and shares, you’ll be a fill-in producers new best friend!

📺Do some research and see who has filled in during past holidays seasons. This will give you an idea of the talent who will be off versus the talent you should reach out to.

📺Remember, there are real people in the office during this time, so don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and call the local news station. Let those who are there working during the holidays know you’re there to help by providing a great, unique story for their viewers.

Just because most people are taking time off… doesn’t mean everyone is.

Now is you’re time to stand out!

Have story ideas? Let’s workshop them below! ⬇️

I was so flustered from waking up late, getting breakfast and lunch made, rushing to get us all out of the house, think about my work to-do list and trying to be on time, I almost missed out on this moment.

👯‍♀️It’s a good thing my girls are more present than their mama. Because they could point out we all randomly picked out the same look!

❓Do you ever find yourself missing out on moments because your thinking about a million other things?!

Today I was interviewed by a college senior.

She needed to speak to a media and PR professional and she got my name from her professor.

Considering I still feel like I’m a senior in college, I was surprised when she emailed me asking if she could talk to me about my successes and my ethical and moral dilemmas I’ve faced throughout my career. (I guess I’m no longer peers with the college kids). 😂

My set up today wasn’t how I anticipated. My kids were home from school because they’ve both had colds.

👉I spent the first 5 minutes apologizing.. swearing up and down I am a professional regardless of the craziness she was seeing.

👉And then I stopped apologizing. Instead, I explained that this is what I set up for myself. Exactly what I wanted.

🗞I could spend my days in a newsroom or big PR agency. But then when my kids need to be home for any reason, I’d have to scramble for childcare.

But over the last 8+ years I’ve taken steps to have the freedom and flexibility to do what I love and be a mom.

So, I stopped apologizing and let this student ask me all her questions.

And even though the interview ended with me sitting on my bedroom floor, in my pajamas and mom bun, she ended with saying how cool it was that I could do this media thing the way I am… and that the story of my viral parenting post was funny.

✨So, the moral of this story is… a college senior thinks I’m cool and funny!!

✨Oh… and that you CAN be a successful parent and professional!

✨I’m doing it and I’m so proud of myself for sticking with it. It’s taken forever to get where I am… but I wouldn’t change the journey for anything.

What’s 1️⃣ thing you’re doing today that makes you feel proud of yourself?!

🚨You need to use social media as your own media platforms… here’s why…🚨

In May 2019 I went back to work part time at a hyper local magazine.

I had an early morning assignment interview Michelle Obama’s chief speechwriter.

My husband did the morning routine. And do a wonderful job. Yet somehow my daughter ended up at school in her underwear.

After a handful of correspondence and a lot of laughs, I decided to share the story on social media.

It’s relatable: former stay at
home mom goes back to work and on her first day back, her husband sends their daughter to school in underwear.

So what did I do?

1️⃣ Wrote a long caption with all the details
2️⃣Researched mom bloggers who would find the content numerous
3️⃣Tagged bloggers who I knew covered this kind of thing (I didn’t mass tag, I purposefully did it)

Here’s what happened:

✨a blogger reposted my content, it went viral and ALL the mainstream media outlets reached out to me. I’m talking Today Show, Inside Edition, and Parents to name a few.✨

They all reached out to me on social media because of the story I put out there on my social platforms.

➡️Fast forward to today.

My friend tagged me on Facebook in the article reshared on the Today Show reshared in November 2021.

More than 2 years after the initial story and these media outlets are still sharing it.

Now while my poor husband will never live this down, and my daughter is now 6, it goes to show a good story sticks around forever.

And that social media is where the gatekeepers of traditional media are hanging out, finding the stories they want to tell.

It’s why you want to include social media on your PR strategy.

If you have a story to tell (which you all do) don’t wait for someone to give you permission.

Start sharing it on your media platforms today!

⭐️By doing so, you’re getting yourself one step closer to that earned media you deserve… that will live forever!⭐️

When I go away, I unplug from technology and plug into a good book.

I read this one in three days. I loved the main character from the first page… and rooted for her as she navigated her way to her happily ever after (which may not be what you think based on the title).

The journey of her life didn’t go how she envisioned it would go. But whose does?!

It’s not about the destination, it’s about the path you take to get to there. And that path is not always linear.

As I was reading, I started thinking about my journey… about where I was when I graduated college to where I am now.

And while I knew I wanted to be a mom AND have a career in media, getting to where I am now didn’t happen the way I thought.

Here’s a little breakdown of my journey:

✨May 2009: graduated from college single and with no job. But I had a lot of DVDs of myself showing my reporting skills (I was applying to news jobs all over the country)

✨November 2009: Met my husband on a blind date

✨Feb 2010: Got my first job at an international tv station in DC (ended up taking a behind the camera writing job because I was striking out with reporter jobs.)

✨Nov. 2011: Got married and got a new job at in a DC news station (I commuted an hour to the job; my hours were 2am-10am)

✨August 2012: Took the morning show producing job at a Baltimore station (still worked overnights)

✨August 2013: Found out I was pregnant and left the TV world to get a master’s in emerging media. I didn’t know how I was going to be able to give my all to being a parent and a morning show producer so I pivoted.

✨2014 to 2019: Full-time stay at home mom (had another baby girl during this time, 17.5 after my oldest was born)

✨ 2019: Had a post go viral and realized I LOVED helping others share their stories

✨ 2020: Pandemic parenting (enough said)

✨ 2021: Started building Freed Up Communications, my own media strategy agency.

I am now on my way to that parent AND professional I set out to become. I didn’t get there quickly and it wasn’t a straight path, but it’s happening.

Eight years ago I left my job as a morning show tv producer job.

I was newly pregnant… very newly. I gave my two weeks notice the same day I found out I was pregnant with my first daughter.

I didn’t want to work from 11pm to 7am when I was a mom.

But even more than that, I knew I wasn’t going to feel ready to go back to work after just 12 weeks (or less) of maternity leave.

At the time, I knew there weren’t great maternity leave options.

But I didn’t know how sh*tty our options in the US really were.

✨I didn’t know there was absolutely NO federal law requiring paid parental leave. That means none of us are entitled to any paid leave after becoming a parent. Instead it’s up to the states or companies to create their own policies.

✨I didn’t know out of 41 countries, the US has the worst paid parental leave policy.

✨I didn’t know that only 9 states require paid family medical leave.

Eight years ago I knew things weren’t right… but I didn’t realize the implications of these lack of policies.

Congress is now considering legislation that would require 12 weeks of paid leave. It’s not as good as many other countries, but it’s better than what we have now.

So what do you think? Are the paid maternity/paternity leave policies in the US fair?
