Kelsi conquers the turf! And Pick 5 Carryover Fever Continues!

Kelsi Harr, in the 6th race tonight, was on Virtually, a horse bred well for the turf, but had raced only once on the green -- in just the second start of her career, a maiden special weight at Colonial, in 2022, when she split the field. Six months later she was at Fonner Park and then Arapahoe. Both tracks that have no turf courses.

But tonight, in her first start at Canterbury, Virtually found herself back on her favorite footing...the grass. At 50 - 1! Kelsi sat chilly for most of the race. And then in the stretch, she took Virtually to the inside, where she just flew home. A great ride! A $102 payout! On a horse that genuinely figured in the race.

The same can't be said for Kelsi's mount in the 7th, Outlaw Run; an Arkansas Bred that had never been on the turf and has no turf pedigree to speak of. His first ten starts were at the ultra-competitive Oaklawn Park (which has no turf course), where he had limited success. His 11th start was at Canterbury two weeks ago, a maiden special weight on the main going short. He ran dead last. Then tonight.

Outlaw Run was entered by sharp conditioner Robert Cline into a maiden special weight on the turf, going two turns. That's what good trainers do. If something's not clicking, try something else.

Once again Kelsi reserved her horse off the pace and then let him fly, coming into the stretch turn, where he motored home at 35 - 1!

The Kelsi (Turf) Double paid $4,067, an all-time Canterbury record. Kelsi's two huge wins also produced yet another Pick 5 carryover. Tonight's carryover was $30,000 and produced a $170,000 pool. Tomorrow's carryover is $60,000. The total pool is likely to eclipse $300,000!

Tonight's racing at Canterbury was literally one for the record books. Tomorrow just may be the same! Whatever the case, a big shout-out to Kelsi Harr for an amazing night of race riding.

More details including statements from Walz, Canterbury and Running Aces.

Odd that these two managed to apply on the same day which happened to be the very last day they could apply. And they were appointed the very next day - after careful vetting of their applications, I’m sure.

Walz says Melanie Benjamin and Johnny Johnson are professionals who can handle the work.

Though he's good with all horses, according to trainer Joe B. Roberts, groom Juan Rodriguez works especially well with young horses.

In all, he oversees the care of six horses. Roberts says that Juan's horses are always clean and fit. This talented groom also does a very good job organizing the shedrow.

For all of this, Juan Rodriguez is our Groom of the Week!
