•The City of San Diego Fire-Rescue Department acquired the latest-generation Sikorsky S-70i Firehawk helicopter for its 2020 fire season, in response to increasing megafires and longer fire seasons.
• The decision was based on a study by Conklin & de Decker which showed that the twin engine aircraft could carry 40% more water than other recommended aircraft and had several advantages such as cabin volume, speed, mission endurance etc.
• Avionics integrator Hangar One installed tactical radios, navigation systems and other equipment while United Rotorcraft’s facility in Englewood integrated an external water tank made by Kawak Aviation Technologies of Bend.
• Four pilots received extra training from Kevin Bredenbeck before they were allowed to go into service with the new helicopter.
• The first major save occurred in December 2020 when San Miguel Fire District requested assistance due to structures burning under Santa Ana winds at 30 -40 knots; this alone, they believed, justified every penny spent on acquiring it

Mark Allen Barger, 46, allegedly pointed the laser at the Long Beach Police Department's helicopter, commercial airliners and at private planes within the vicinity of the Long Beach Airport.

Police said he anticipated the arrival of aircraft and pointed the laser at their cockpits.

His arrest came after police narrowed down the location of where the laser was coming from.

Detectives and the FBI conducted an operation Jan. 18 in which they allegedly saw Barger leave his home in the 1600 block of Silva Street. Barger was seen pointing the laser at the police helicopter multiple times, according to LBPD.

Long Beach police, with help from the FBI, arrested a man accused of pointing a "high-powered" laser at multiple aircraft for nearly one year.

Helicopter Pilot Aaron Fouquette was flying for AirLife at the time of the stop according to arrest documents, was in full flight uniform when he was arrested and told deputies he was on his way to his base in Hugo, Colorado.

Breath tests showed the veteran pilot's blood alcohol level was .126 as he was on his way to work in full flight uniform. He has since resigned, according to his lawyer.

The Lockheed Martin protest contends that the Army had a predetermined outcome for the competition that undermined equal treatment of the offerors; that subjectivity contaminated the comparison of competing designs; that some criteria used in selecting a winner were not stated in the solicitation; and that the claim of a best-value selection is belied by the significantly higher bid that Bell/Textron submitted for a design not materially better than the Sikorsky-Boeing offering.

If the protest is upheld by GAO, the Lockheed-Boeing team wants the Army to reevaluate the competing proposals fairly, adhering strictly to the terms of the final request for proposals (RfP) and eliminating subjectivity that it contends biased comparisons.

Bell’s winning proposal offered a tiltrotor design, conceptionally similar to the V-22 Osprey operated by other U.S. military services.

The Gardai Air Support Unit currently operates two Eurocopter EC135 T2’s (256 & 272). It would make sense from a standardization perspective that the new helicopter would also be an EC135 / H135 but the text from the Department implies the new helicopter would be bigger.
The budget for the helicopter is €12.5 million +VAT so the Airbus H145 could be a contender. The H145 has more than double the internal cabin volume and would fit the bill for transporting the Armed Response and Emergency Response Units.

North Shore Rescue has entered a new era in its mission, having performed their first ever hoist of a lost and injured snowboarder from a helicopter after darkness.

At the time, a heavy storm of snow and freezing rain was expected, raising the risk profile of the rescue.

Talon Helicopter’s crew was ready at the Cap Gate SAR station within 35 minutes. With the helicopter team’s night-vision capabilities, they could easily spot the snowboarder’s cellphone light down a familiar gully.

They lowered two rescuers about 60 metres below the aircraft, who quickly assessed the subject and got him harnessed to be winched back up. They were flying out of the backcountry before the ground team sent in as back-up had even left the rescue base.

It's the most efficient way to rescue people in the mountains and get volunteers home to their families, North Shore Rescue team leader Mike Danks says
