“The Aristocrat of Motion Picture Magazines”

Photoplay was one of the first American film fan magazines. Founded in 1911 in Chicago, the magazine was directed at movie fans, following the stars both on and off the screen. During its apex in the 1920s and 1930s, Photoplay was considered very influential within the motion picture industry, publishing the writings of starmakers such as Hedda Hopper, Walter Winchell, Hazel MacDonald, Adela Rogers St. Johns, Sheilah Graham, Dorothy Kilgallen, Rob Wagner and Louella Parsons.
