Who on Earth is Dr Ben, and why is he on my radio?

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkXyLtWIttgLFlrdSsStgug/videos?view=57&flow=grid

Starting out co-presenting a science series titled 'Cornwall's Science Sessions' on Pirate FM DAB, Dr Ben - a biologist from Exeter University - headed to Falmouth's Source 96.1 FM to produce and present your Thursday morning breakfast show. With a love for playing anything by Rod Stewart and chatting to marvelous special guests and celebs, Ben invites various well-known, fantastic people to chat on-air every week. But, something is missing: your delightful company! Tune in and please do get in touch; Ben would be delighted to hear from you. You can catch Ben on West Cornwall’s Coast FM every Wednesday evening from 18.00, too, where you’ll hear Ben chatting to scientists, celebrities and other AWESOME guests!

His scientific research has a focus on the way in which temperature fundamentally underpins ‘friendly’ relationships between hosts and resident microbes in nature. As it turns out, this kind of interaction (termed a ‘mutualism’) is absolutely vital for all living things on the planet: take coral reefs, which amazingly underpin around one third of all species of fish in the entire ocean; the coral animals responsible for manufacturing these rocky structures (reefs are actually the external skeletons of corals; pretty weird right?) live with tiny plant-like organisms inside them. Unfortunately, many of these vital mutualisms in nature are breaking down or changing in line with climate change (think ‘coral bleaching’, where corals lose their resident plants). So, it’s a priority for scientists to understand some of the key factors - such as temperature - which affect these relationships.

When Ben can’t be found in the science laboratory - playing with small green microbes - or spinning epic tunes* over at Source FM, you can usually catch him in the ‘beat lab’ (his home recording studio). He has recently released his first EP, proceeds from which he will donate to The RNLI (Search for ‘Young’ by ‘Benjamin Makin’ on iTunes/Amazon/Spotify/YouTube).
