There is something about fall that incites wanderlust and the desire to be outside—to drink in the crisp air and savor the scents of ripening grapes and apples, to feel and hear the snap of leaves underfoot. The explosion of colors, fragrances and textures offers food for all of the senses. This season, awaken your senses along the trails of the greater Western New York region, from the Erie Canal bikeway to the pathways and beaches of Presque Isle State Park, exploring the region through nature, art, food, wine and craft beverages.

Inspired by local growers, we explore the suppliers of our regional food system in the new summer issue. In “The Hands that Feed Us”, we talked with wholesale cooperative Eden Valley Growers as well as the owners of Abers Acres, an organic family farm in Kennedy. The region’s largest organic farm—Thorpe’s Organic Family Farm—is also featured, along with Grandma Stage’s Peaches, a small family farm in North East, PA. The dedication, resilience and kindness of these families who nurture the crops that feed us year after year, generation to generation stands out as a common theme. They are the real story behind our local food system.

Spring is the season for new beginnings—a time to reset. It calls for patience, watching for the days to grow longer, the seeds to stir and roots to grow. This year, in particular, we are especially keen on the returning light as we anticipate a darkening shroud as the entire region prepares for the 2024 solar eclipse.

In this issue we pay homage to the sun and the moon with stories of growing and healing as well as light and shadow. Nicole Capozziello talks with Andrea Neidrauer from Terra House in Akron, NY, about her path to feeding others. Donna De Palma introduces us to a herd of therapy goats, and Brett Llenos Smith gives us a primer on indoor growing.

We love the apple harvest! And what better way to enjoy apples than with apple cider? Well, and in pie, and tarts, and salads, too... Did you know that New York State leads the country in the number of cider producers and is second for apple growers?!

Contributor Brett Llenos Smith recently went searching for artisanal apple cider in Western New York. Read about his journey in the fall issue.

As Covid restrictions lifted, a friend and I were looking to mail order bottles of artisanal ciders from the Finger Lakes—with some costing $30 for a 750-ml bottle—when we decided: Instead of also paying postage, why not just go and make a weekend out of it? For the last few years, my friend and...

To the indigenous who live in Western New York, corn has been an important dietary staple and inspiration for making art for hundreds of years. Vanessa Parker, a Seneca Nation member of the Hawk Clan from the Cattaraugus Territory near Gowanda, wrote about the history and significance of corn for Edible Western NY & Erie Lakeshore. In Salamanca, NY, The Onöhsagwë:de’ Cultural Center also features artwork and exhibits that tell the history and stories of corn and the Haudenosaunee.

Behind the scenes flashback: Meet Jill Bornand Photography. Jill is a lifestyle, editorial and brand photographer from the Chautauqua region and has been shooting photos for Edible Western NY & Erie Lakeshore since its inception in 2017. As a visual storyteller and documentary lifestyle photographer, she creates brand imagery for small businesses as well as capturing perfectly imperfect images of family life.

This was one of our first photo shoots for the cover of the summer issue. It was a remarkably blustery cold morning on a Lake Erie beach!

Jill’s incredible edible-themed photos, many of which have graced a cover, will be on display at the Chautauqua Art Gallery in Jamestown during the Edible Art Show, now through October 27. Stop in at the artists reception and launch of our fall issue this Friday, September 8, from 5–7:30pm and say hello.

You can see more of her work at https://ediblewesternny.ediblecommunities.com/jill-bornand
