My loyalty to my party ends where my loyalty to my country begins—Manuel Luis Quezon

“Under the new guidance naman, I think it's safe to expect na maitutuloy ang mga naitatag na ng namahala ng Literarium last year. Siguro pinaka pivotal point sa magiging efforts this year is to further cement ang name ng QueSci when it comes to writing and oratorical competitions” ayon sa Language Society President na si Jolo Rubias.

“Before the event, naramdaman ko na ‘yung success ng organization since I have a team, officers last academic year and volunteers, including G&BB team, that’s really hands on din for the organization.

SPORTS FEATURE | A True-Blooded Alchemist: Xianthy Dator’s Craft of Combat

Where’s the trophy? She just comes running over to me.
Whether Taylor Swift would agree or not, Alchemists come in manifestations beyond Travis Kelce. The sole Karateka—or one would fondly moniker as a Karate Practitioner— of the QSHS Alchemists, Xianthy Lexine Dator embodies supreme precision and control, turning the ordinary into extraordinary with the magic she brings to the mat.

Dator won a silver in Laro’t Saya Karatedo Tournament for the Kumite Discipline - Junior Girls bracket this August 10, 2024 held in Tayabas City.

Hooking the audience with her signature Kagi Geri or Hook Kick, Third Class Brown Belt Karateka Dator won silver after defeating First Class Brown Belt Karateka Jesica Ebreo with a score of 0-6 in the finals round, representing years of practice, discipline, and the mastery of technique.

Their belts’ hierarchical differences show with Ebreo slamming Dator down to square one. Ebreo’s high proficiency and tactical understanding is expected, with the Karateka just a rank away from black belt.

Dator showcased her dominance in Kumite with a 5-3 win in the elimination round and a 7-2 win in the semis and a final blow in the last round vs a senior.

“With the score difference naman, tinanggap ko na lang siya kasi pagod na pagod na ako tapos sinukuan na rin ako ng left thigh ko,” stated Dator on a post-game interview.

She looks back on the bittersweet ex*****on of her favorite move, the Kagi Geri. Cladded with multiple injuries; in her left thigh and both ankles, Dator was saddened that she only executed Kagi Geri once.

Martial Arts is a physically demanding sport, injuries and permanent mobility impairments are not uncommon. While martial arts may take a toll on your body, it builds mental conditioning. The most important virtues learned in Martial Arts are the act of respect and discipline.

Respect towards yourself and others is a huge factor when it comes to success, and in Karatedo discipline is a necessity to be an exceptional Karateka. These ideologies are applicable inside and outside the dojo, for student-martial artists this applies to the demands of life and their sport.

According to Dator, “Mahirap maging estudyanteng atleta,” a statement the QSHS sports team, Alchemist can attest to. She expressed how difficult it is to juggle her academics, extracurricular activities, sports—and the limitations set by personal beliefs.

In the same competition, Dator’s Kata heat fell through in the Elimination Round when she made a crucial mistake of a wrong stance. A move that encapsulates the life of a student-athlete.

Like the 1:30 minute round of Kumite she played, for her life requires the same critical thinking skills needed in Kumite. Martial arts teach you many things in life, now older and wiser, her skills in life grow much like her skills in her sport.

Karatedo is still a growing community in Quezon Province. Laro’t Saya, a sports development program by Tayabas City Mayor, Lovely Reynoso. Is an avenue to enhance the skills of Tayabenses and their neighbors when it comes to sports.

Dator hopes for the growth of the Karatedo community in Quezon and the Nation as a whole. At present there is no DepEd coordinator for the sport, therefore it is not part of the Palarong Pambansa and its qualifying series.

“Hopefully ilagay na nila [sa Palarong Pambansa] at magkaroon na ng coordinator ang DepEd for Karate kasi I’m sure na maraming lalaro… In representing the school, for me syempre lalaro ako”

Karate’s inclusion in the Palarong Pambansa event is in talks after Karate Pilipinas (KPI) held a demonstration this year’s installment. This has been a 20 year discussion between the Palaro Committee and KPI board Directors, hopefully it opens doors for athletes like Dator.

As Xianthy continues her journey in karate, there is little doubt that she will continue to refine her alchemy, turning each new challenge into an opportunity for growth and transformation. Her legacy will not just be one of victories, but of the lessons she imparts—lessons about the power of focus, the importance of strategy, and the magic that happens when an athlete fully understands and embraces their craft.

INSUFFICIENT VAULTAGE: PH Pole Vaulter EJ Obiena falls one jump short to medal on Paris Olympics 2024

Filipino Pole Vaulter Ernest John 'EJ' Obiena fails to bounce back for the podium as he places 4th on Men's Pole Vault - Finals on Paris Olympics 2024.

Landing a clearance score of 5.90, Obiena tied with Greek opponent Emmanouil Karalis but the latter still hailed bronze medal via clearance countback.

"I am heartbroken that a single failure cost me and cost a nation I so deeply love—the podium," stated Obiena on his social media platforms.

Though failing to enter the rostrum, improvement is apparent as he leaps from 11th place on Tokyo Olympics 2020 to Paris Olympics' 4th Best Men's Pole Vaulter.

With his Paris 2024 heat over, Obiena is yet to decide for LA Olympics 2028 comeback.

Meanwhile, Swedish-American Pole Vaulter Armand Gustav "Mondo" Duplantis defends title as Champion and sets new 6.25m World Record for the same category.

“Sa SSLG, we look forward na mas dumami pa ang mga facilities that would nurture Quesayanos' talents especially in the field of STEM.

Regencia passes torch to sci-educ supervisor

These were the parting words left by outgoing school principal Peter Andrew Regencia during the ceremonial turnover for the directorial office of Quezon Science High School (QSHS) today, August 2.

As ad-interim officer-in-charge and school director, Science Educational Program Supervisor (EPS) Carmela Ezcel Orogo is expected to lead the helm for school year 2023 to 2024.
Regencia was reinstated to Caigdal National High School (CNHS) in Unisan, Quezon after he was promoted to Principal III.

Prior to the reassignment, the former director served two consecutive school years as the officer-in-charge school director of Quezon Science High School (QSHS).

𝝞𝗠𝗣𝝖𝗖𝗧 𝝖𝝢𝗗 𝗗𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗟𝝤𝗣𝗠𝗘𝝢𝗧
Under his two-year stay, Regencia facilitated the construction of multiple infrastructure projects in the institution, including the new cafeteria hall, second dormitory building, and multi-purpose building.

His sudden reinstatement—which drew doubt from the student body—was soon alleviated by promises of consistent progress for the following years.

“I-fofollow up sa stakeholders [projects] para tuloy ang physical development, for both infrastructure and curriculum instructions,” promised Regencia.

Furthermore, he confirmed that the completion of the three-storey science building is slated to continue up until projected completion in 2025.

𝗦𝗧𝗨𝗗𝗘𝝢𝗧 𝗘𝗫𝗣𝗘𝗖𝗧𝝖𝗧𝝞𝝤𝝢𝗦
Acting School Director Carmela Ezcel Orogo’s key turnover ceremony was also met with hopes and optimism from this year’s incoming students.

“Although wala pa ako masyadong masasabi dahil kakaupo pa lang, mananatili akong hopeful na sana ay may ears and handang panindigan ang mga bibitawang pangarap,” shared a student.

“[During the term] sana ay mabigyan ng focus ang sektor ng security, specially sa dormers,” shared another student.

“Hindi to the point of irresponsibility, pero nag-iisang dalangin ko lang ay sana mabigyan ng opportunity maging free to express themselves ang students, not to the point na irresponsible na, pero enough lang,” they added.

𝝢𝗘𝗪 𝗣𝗥𝝖𝗖𝗧𝝞𝗖𝗘𝗦
In the following months of Orogo’s governance, who is also acting as the EPS for science, the school is expected to recalibrate its practices in scientific and technological fields—particularly in the field of research.

Following the school’s rising stagnancy in the Division Science and Technology Fair (DSTF) in the past years, this is seen as a step forward to regaining their standing in the local research scene.

Orogo previously served seven years as the founding principal of Quezon Science High School.

“I am commited to listening to your voices, and understanding your needs and addressing them," pahayag ni Orogo sa kanyang pananalita sa unang araw ng taong panuruan. "Together we will be a QSHS that not only upholds traditional excellence, but also the hollistic development of every individual.”

“As we look forward, I ask for your support and cooperation, lets work hand in hand to create an environment that inspires and empowers; walang iwanan tungo sa matatag na kinabukasan,” dagdag pa niya.

"Let us begin the legacy that future generations will look up to with pride through your passion, dedication, and hardwork," ani pa niya. "Remember the lines 'honor, excellence, and service'."

Quezon Science Welcomes ‘24-‘25 With a Smile

Quezon Science High School (QSHS) kicks off year ‘24-‘25, welcoming it with pride and honor, opening the program with a cheerful smile.

In line with the change of Officer-In-Charge (OIC), the school proudly welcomes back its first OIC, Mrs. Carmela Ezcel A. Orogo. She shared few words igniting the fire within students to continue striving.

The flag ceremony continued as usual and the tradition thrives as the grade 7 students introduce themselves in front of all the Quesayanos, teachers and non-teaching staff, and parents.

As new chapter begins, so does the school year, as the Department of Education pushes forward the opening of school year ‘25-‘26 back to June. The current school calendar has been shortened in order for the next academic year to kick off in time.

With hope for the betterment of the school, students anticipate what the new OIC plans as many projects of the past has just begun. It is still evident that there has been shortcomings from the recent OIC.

QueSci HS names interim principal for year ‘24-’25

Schools Division Office of Quezon appoints Science Education Program Supervisor (EPS) Carmela Ezcel A. Orogo as the ad-interim officer-in-charge of Quezon Science High School (QSHS).

Orogo previously served as the school’s founding school principal for seven years back in 2011 spearheading the training for science-related competitions and leading the construction of school infrastructure such as the dormitory.

This decision was primarily driven by former school director Peter Regencia’s reassignment to Caigdal National High School (CNHS) in Unisan, Quezon, where he is set to serve as Principal III.

Despite doubts brought by his sudden reassignment—Regencia reassured that development plans left by his administration will be continued and improved by the succeeding administration.

Regencia adds.

Moreover, Regencia expressed satisfaction with his two-year performance, adding that he has met expectations set for him throughout his administration in QSHS.

Regencia says.

In line with Orogo’s temporary assignment as school director, the student body should expect the possibility of another change in administrations within the school year.
