This Page serves as an outlet for information regarding the world of indie publishing and its authors derived from personal experience and shared relevant online articles. Book Publicity by Marlan is a subsidiary of Roadmap Communications, both operated by freelance publicist Marlan Warren, a veteran journalist and filmmaker whose goal is to create custom-crafted marketing campaigns that assist ar

tists in spreading the word about their unique visions through media and social networking. It will provide tips for the novice as well as the seasoned author, as well as feature books that may be of interest visitors to this page. Marlan Warren is a graduate of USC Film School (BFA Screenwriting). She combines her talents in writing and story pitching with expertise in the field of author public relations. She also designs websites and is a professional photographer. In addition, she is a sold screenwriter whose documentary, "Reunion" was the official selection at numerous international film festivals, and the author of the novel, "Roadmaps for the Karmically Challenged." Her belief is that like snowflakes, no two authors or books are alike. Each deserves a specially designed "frame" and "launch." This page will give pointers on how indie authors may get maximum benefit out of their marketing and publicity.

Found this in my mailbox today. I met this writer a few years ago when I was speaking on panels at the Greater Los Angeles Writers Conference. Part of the fun involved meeting with writers individually to give free editing consultations, and he was one of them. Flash forward to NOW. He sent me his manuscript and I gave him written notes with editing suggestions for free instead of my usual initial consultation fee.
After much consideration, we decided not to pursue a working relationship; however, he kept insisting that he wanted to pay me for my notes. That's what this check is.
More valuable than anything is his note of appreciation.
A welcome Thanksgiving gift!

Into everyone's life, especially now, a little Self-Help must fall! I'm excited to announce that I am partnering with Professional Life Coach and Hypnotherapist Luke Benoit this summer as we launch his follow-up to ALL STORMS PASS: THE ANTI-MEDITATIONS. Here's the scoop:

If anyone ever told you that you were anything less than wonderful—they lied.
—ALL STORMS PASS: RAIN AND FIRE

Life Coach Luke Benoit has followed up his book, ALL STORMS PASS: THE ANTI-MEDITATIONS with a second book in the series: RAIN AND FIRE. Warning: This is not a book for the faint of heart in need of recovery from trauma. It’s a two-fisted, take-no-prisoners approach to coping with mental, emotional, and psychosomatic traumatic challenges.

This book offers ways to soothe the suffering and liberate them, if they are willing to face their demons.

As with the first book, Benoit presents verses he calls “anti-meditations” (which are the same as meditations, only different). RAIN AND FIRE continues to riff on therapeutic themes of recovery, addiction, self-help, and personal spirituality. A former psychotherapist with extensive 12-Step Recovery knowhow, Benoit proposes that these anti-meditations may occasionally serve as puzzles—jumping off places for discussion, self-assessment, or prayer.

As a philosopher and poet, Benoit strikes a balance between his own truths and universal truths. Yes, he went through the Valley of the Shadow, but he points out that his experiences are not unique. The question ultimately is not necessarily how can we avoid trauma, but how can we flourish in spite of it?

RAIN AND FIRE’S hybrid of searing poetry, confessional naked rage and heartfelt love is tempered with popup humor that keeps the reader smiling through tears while turning pages. Instead of titles, the meditations have subject-oriented headlines such as:

“When will it be success and how will I know it when it gets here?”

“Today, I will admit that sometimes BEING STUCK IS A CHOICE”

“Today, I will accept that LIFE is not an ALFRED HITCHCOCK MOVIE”

“There comes a time when no matter where you've been and no matter what you've been through, you have to MOVE FORWARD anyway”

And my personal favorite:

I will WALK MY DOG -
no matter what else is
going on.

Even Benoit’s Dedication starts out with a smile:

For my Auntie Cia,
my Mom and Dad
and the Tall Dark Stranger
I thought might bury me
in the basement.
In a poignant, highly personal passage, the author reveals that after writing the first book, he suffered a physical and mental breakdown that was eventually diagnosed as severe vertigo—a health crisis that ended his progress for a time, except in the arena of healing, which eventually did happen.

Benoit does not attempt to offer readers magical solutions received from On High, but supplies aid as a fellow traveler who has come many times to a crossroads that asks him to choose between Light and Darkness, and he continues to choose Light.

I highly recommend this book to advocates of 12-Step Recovery and those who wish to learn more about it; seekers of recovery from trauma or life itself; spiritual seekers; and poetry lovers.

I received this nice email from the L.A. Times Festival of Books volunteer organizer giving us a heads up on getting our tickets for their virtual event in April. I stopped at 6 tix, but very pleased with the selection available (one panel includes Chang-Rae Lee whose first novel, "Native Speaker," I came close to optioning for a film back in the day, and who was later nominated for a Pulitzer).

The link for the Calendar of Events might be hard to find so I'm including it here: Calendar:
https://events.latimes.com/festivalofbooks/2021-calendar/

And you'll have to click on the event listing to get details, then reserve your ticket for the Zoom thingy by filling out a bunch of info, etc.

How great that they don't have to transport the authors, give them escorts (that was me), etc. I miss some of the names I used to look forward to (Michael Ondaatje, Joyce Carol Oates, Patt Morrison, etc.), but there's plenty to nourish us in these new offerings!

"We miss our volunteers, but as you probably know by now, due to current health conditions the 2021 Festival of Books is once again, a virtual event. So the volunteer gang won't be able to get together this year. But we continue to think of you and look forward to a return to an in-person event in 2022.

That said, since there's no role for volunteers in a virtual event, it provides the opportunity for you to attend and enjoy this year's programming. Today, the L.A. Times has released its line-up for the week-long virtual festival taking place April 17 - 23. You can make reservations now!

Things are looking brighter, and we hope you'll join us again as a volunteer next year!
We thank you for your past service and your continued loyalty to this great SoCal event.
Stay safe, stay healthy, and we'll see you next year! - Larry Deckel

Book Publicity By Marlan Celebrating 7 Years

Marlan approaches each book with consideration for the passion that created it and the audience that will best appreciate it. Authors are as different as snowflakes. Each campaign is crafted with that in mind.
