Music at Co-Cath is thrilled to present a fully staged production of Zuleta's captivating new work El Oratorio Panhispánico. This oratorio tells the story of the Passion of Christ through the lens of Hispanic immigrants. Zuleta composed this piece entirely in Spanish through the poetic form of “décimas,” and the music utilizes a mix of contemporary classical sound and Latin American musical genres from Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Cuba, and Venezuela among others. This fully staged production is directed by Daniel Irizarry and will include 12 singers and an 11-piece band that combines classical & traditional Latin American instruments.

The composer, Alejandro Zuleta, says "I wrote this oratorio as a way of resisting the consolidation of biased stereotypes about race and identity. I hope to accomplish this by using the material to explore the contradictory realities that emanate from human migration. On the one hand, migration makes possible the creation of new and unique expressions of culture, richness, and beauty. These expressions are only possible in the miraculous clashing of diverse cultural identities. On the other hand, there is the heartbreak that comes by being seen through biased stereotypes and treated as “The Other.”

As you know the Diocese of Brooklyn will celebrate a memorial mass for the repose of the soul of Pope Benedict XVI today, January 5, at noon at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint James.

During this week, I am attending a conference of FOCUS missionaries in St. Louis. 17,000 young men and women have joined here in prayer and renewal. You can be assured of my prayers uniting with you all back home as we pray for Pope Benedict XVI this day.
