On 19 August 2003, a bomb attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq, killed 22 humanitarian aid workers, including the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello. Five years later, the General Assembly adopted a resolution designating 19 August as World Humanitarian Day (WHD).

Each year, WHD focuses on a theme, bringing together partners from across the humanitarian system to advocate for the survival, well-being and dignity of people affected by crises, and for the safety and security of aid workers.

WHD is a campaign by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and humanitarian partners.

: Twenty medical students Kidnapped.

12 from the University of Jos and 8 from the University of Maiduguri.

The students were kidnapped in Benue State along the Otukpo/Otukpa/Enugu Road on Thursday.
The students were travelling for the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students' annual convention in Enugu when they were abducted.

Widespread condemnations have trailed the abduction of the 20 medical students.

While the Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has condemned the abduction and directed the security agencies in the state to intensify efforts to ensure their safe release, the Minister of Health, Professor Muhammad Pate, expressed sadness over the incident, describing it as unfortunate.

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has also called on the IG to urgently intervene in the abduction of the students.
This is just as the IG, Kayode Egbetokun, ordered the deployment of tactical operatives and assets to ensure the prompt rescue of the kidnapped medical students in Benue State.

The House of Representatives, in a statement issued yesterday by its Spokesman, Hon. Akin Rotimi also called on the Inspector General of Police (IG) and other security agencies to mobilise all necessary resources to ensure the safe return of the students.

: Heman Bekele has been named Time's 2024 Kid of the year.

The fifteen-year-old invented a soap that could one day treat and even prevent some skin cancers.

Bekele was honoured for his work on a cancer-fighting soap this year's 3M Young Scientist's Challenge, a competition that encourages kids to think of unique ways to solve everyday problems. Last year, his work won him $25,000 from 3M for his research.

Bekele's award-winning soap was inspired by his childhood in Ethiopia before moving to the United States at the age of 4. The soap delivers cancer - fighting drugs via lipid nanoparticles — which work to activate the body's immune cells to fend off cancer.

As Time writes, "His accomplishment: inventing a soap that could one day treat and even prevent multiple forms of skin cancer. It may take years before such a product comes to market, but this summer Heman, who's 15, is already spending part of every weekday working in a lab at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, hoping to bring his dream to fruition."

⚠️The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) outbreak in parts of Africa, a public health emergency of international concern.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has withdrawn the controversial , which stipulates the jailing of people who embarrass or disrespect government officials.

The legislation, introduced on 24 July, sought, among other things, to criminalise certain actions deemed to be against national security and sovereignty.

It includes any Nigerian who refuses to recite the national anthem or a place or worship shall be fined N5 million, face a 10-year prison sentence, or both among others.

: The Southport stabbings have led to frequent riots across the over the past week.

Police said Monday two girls, aged 6 and 7, were killed, and six of the nine that were injured were in critical condition. Officers said the following day that another child, a 9-year-old girl, had died as a result of her injuries.

Two adults were also critically injured, police said, adding that they suffered their injures because they “were bravely trying to protect the children who were being attacked.”

Merseyside Police said the attack took place at a Taylor Swift event at a dance school in Southport on Monday, July 29th morning, and the force said it received a call for help just before midday. Emergency services, including 13 ambulances and other specialized resources, were sent to the scene, and a “major incident” was declared.

According to a report by BBC on the 4th, the riots triggered by far-right activists inciting demonstrations in multiple locations have become more tense over the weekend.

On August 3rd and 4th, protests erupted in more than 30 cities and towns across the UK, with many demonstrations turning into riots. In some places, thugs threw flares, looted shops, and even attacked and burned police stations.

Police have nearly 400 arrests linked to violent disorders across the UK, with that number set to rise with each day.

"So far 378 arrests have been made and we expect that total to rise each day as forces continue to identify those involved and continue to apprehend those responsible," Gavin Stephens, chairman of the National Police Chiefs' Council, has said.

"Work is going on around the clock to do this, and those involved will be brought to justice."

He also sought to ease fears that violence could continue or escalate, saying police were prepared.

"I want to reassure the public that a united and robust policing response is in place across the country, and we are doing all we can to tackle this disorder and keep you safe.

Hasina has been the Prime Minister since 2009, leading the Awami League government.

The resignation comes after weeks of student-led protests demanding her resignation, which eventually turned into nationwide unrest

Earlier, nearly 100 people were killed on Sunday as clashes between police and anti-government protesters intensified. The student protests, initially focused on abolishing quotas in civil service jobs, have now grown into a broader anti-government movement.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has ordered telecommunication operators to immediately reconnect all phone lines that were blocked as part of the NIN-SIM verification exercise.

The NCC gave the directive in a statement on Monday.

The press statement reads in parts ⬇️

"Over the weekend many telecom subscribers/consumers were unable to access their phone lines because of the inability of many telecom consumers to verify their NINs with their Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs).

Telecoms consumers and the public will recall the compulsory linkage of NIN with SIM which began in December 2020 when the government directed telecommunication companies to bar unregistered SIM cards and SIMs that were not linked to NIN.

Since December 2023, the Commission has since reviewed the deadline a few times; April 15, 2024 was set as the deadline for the full network barring of subscribers with four or fewer SIMs that had unverified NIN details. This deadline was then reviewed to July 31, 2024, to give consumers more time to ensure their submitted NIN details are properly verified. Despite these extensions, many phone lines are yet to be linked with verified NINs.

The consumer is our priority, therefore, considering the challenges the blockages have caused, the Commission has directed all operators to reactivate all lines that were disconnected over the weekend in view of the short time available for consumers to undertake the verification of their NINs with their SIMs. Reactivated consumers are to note that this is for a limited period to allow them to properly link their NIN to their SIM.

Members of the public who are yet to verify their SIMs are encouraged to do so as soon as possible to maintain access to their lines.

President Bola Tinubu has signed the ₦70,000 minimum wage bill into law.

The president signed the bill in the council chamber of the State House, in the middle of the federal executive council (FEC) meeting.

A National Assembly delegation led by the President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio and some members of the House of Representatives were around to witness the ground-breaking event...

Labour unions had initially proposed ₦494,000 as a new minimum wage from ₦30,000 with the government offering ₦60,000. After a series of negotiations, the workers demanded ₦250,000 while the government shifted grounds to N62,000.

But on July 18, the Federal Government and the unions reached a consensus figure of ₦70,000.

: The Federal Government and Organised Labour have agreed on a new national minimum wage of N70,000, a significant increase from the current N30,000.

The newly agreed minimum wage was reached on Thursday when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu met with the leadership of the organized Labour, led by presidents of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) at the State House, Abuja, the second meeting within a week.

Before reaching the agreement, the two sides, being government and the organised private sector on one side, and the organised Labour on the other, had held a long-drawn series of negotiations, starting with the Constitution of the Bukar Goni-Aji-led Tripartite Committee on New National Minimum Wage.

Investigators believe that Thomas Mathew Crooks, armed with a semi-automatic AR-15 rifle, opened fire at the former president while he was addressing a crowd in Butler, Pennsylvania, leaving one audience member dead and two others wounded.

The FBI has yet to identify a motive.

The 20-year-old kitchen worker was shot dead at the scene by a Secret Service sniper, officials said.
In his well-to-do hometown, however, neighbours are in shock, seemingly unable to grasp how a quiet young man is now accused in the shooting.

The FBI, for its part, has said only that Crooks was the "subject involved in the assassination attempt on the former president and that an active investigation was under way."

The FBI has obtained the gunman’s telephone.

The FBI found “suspicious devices” in the gunman’s home and his vehicle that have been “rendered safe by bomb technicians”.

Thomas Crooks had not been carrying ID, so investigators used DNA and facial recognition technology to identify him, the FBI said.

The Galaxy Ring is a "smart ring" that can track health metrics and is a first-of-its-kind product for Samsung.
Samsung completely redesigned its Buds3 series of wireless ear phones.

Samsung also launched the and foldable smartphones.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 most notably add the 8 Gen 3, which is Qualcomm’s latest flagship chipset. It has a dedicated neural processing unit for the growing list of Galaxy AI and Google Gemini features present in Android 14 and One UI 6. Samsung refined their outward design with a flatter profile and less curvature around the corners and edges while making internal room for better cooling properties. Both devices also get an IP48 rating for protection against dust and water.

They previously didn’t have an ingress protection rating for dust, though the “4” in that slot means it’s not exactly dust-tight — it only guarantees protection against objects 1mm or larger.

#ICYMI: NIN and 10k - Nigeria Customs Service has commenced the distribution of seized food items. The Customs initiated this with a bag of rice being auctioned at the price of N10,000 in Lagos State which was kicked-off by the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, who expressed commitment to align with President Bola Tinubu-led administration's plans to tackle the pressing issue of food insecurity by ensuring the availability of essential food items to Nigerians. Speaking at the flag-off of the rice disbursement program in Lagos on Thursday, February 22, 2024, CGC Adeniyi emphasized that the distribution of rice would be targeted at areas of customs operations, ensuring direct access to beneficiaries. The Governor of Oyo State said the explosion occurred at about 7.44 pm yesterday in Bodija, Ibadan. Gov. Seyi Makinde revealed that illegal miners occupying one of the houses in Bodija had stored explosive devices there, which caused the blast with over 70 casualties. The Governor released statement reads ⤵️ "We visited the scene of the explosion which occurred at about 7.44 pm yesterday, 16 January 2024 in Bodija, Ibadan. This unfortunate incident resulted in death and injury to residents in the vicinity and also affected properties. We have already deployed first responders and all relevant agencies within Oyo State to carry out comprehensive search and rescue operations. These operations will continue throughout the night. Earth moving equipment, ambulances, emergency lights, and security were deployed to the scene of the incident. The wounded and injured are being treated and moved to public and private hospitals within Ibadan. Medical personnel are on standby at these hospitals to provide all needed assistance to the injured. We have visited UCH to see some of those injured during the incident. In total, we have 77 injured victims so far, most of whom were treated and discharged and 2 fatalities. May their souls rest in peace and may God give their loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. I have directed that the medical bills of all victims be covered by the government. We will also be providing temporary accommodation for those whose houses were affected and ensuring that they are supported to rebuild their lives. Preliminary investigations by the security agencies revealed that illegal miners occupying one of the houses in Bodija had stored explosive devices there which caused the blast. The investigations are ongoing. All those found culpable for this will be brought to book.
