The current weeds and grass ordinance was first enacted in 1987. Botetourt County Sheriff's Office has been the lead enforcement agent on inoperative vehicles and while the office of Community Development handles grass/weeds complaints, the ordinance technically only gives that authority to the Sheriff's Office. The ordinance is not changing but will allow for Community Development staff to be an enforcement agent for weeds and grass complaints, and inoperative vehicles, and the intent is to reduce the amount of manpower that is needed when there are multiple violations on one site. There have been NO NEW staff members dedicated to this.
Here is some back story. Community Development has partnered with the Botetourt County Sherriff’s Office on complaints involving inoperative vehicles, animal safety, hoarding, public safety, illegal operations, and many other complaints, but has not had any lead enforcement authority.
Since 2009:
-Community Development has investigated 559 high weeds/grass complaints (key word - complaints...)
-The Community Development office also handles zoning complaints. The department works towards compliance first and foremost, meeting property owners and having multiple discussions and touch points throughout the process. As a result of the collaborative efforts to complain compliance, since 2014, only one zoning complaint has ever went to court. Additionally, through our partnerships, we've been able to link those in need to other service providers and nonprofits when someone may not have the means to address the complaints.
WHAT IS NOT CHANGING:
-Process is NOT CHANGING
-Remains complaint-based
-Lead enforcement agency remaining consistent
-No new position added (Full Time reduced to Part Time)
-No additional zoning districts added
WHAT IS CHANGING
-Consolidating enforcement from two departments to one where feasible
-Keeping citizens out of court by standardizing administrative processes for certain violations
We urge any citizen with questions to please reach out to us and not believe everything you see on social media. We also heard many of you at our last Board Meeting talking about reaching out to your neighbors before calling in a complaint. That's what we love about our community - you are always willing to help one another out! That's what makes Botetourt County so special and we are honored to serve.
Our Community Development Team wants to make sure that you have accurate information, plus many of the folks that work on this team also call Botetourt County home. You can reach out to them at our website: https://www.botetourtva.gov/communitydevelopment, by phone at (540)928-2070 or by email at [email protected].

I love suff like this
Here are some interesting facts about sunrise/sunset times.
> The sunset time remains the same all the way from June 22nd through July 3rd!
> The longest days of the year are actually June 17-19 and June 22-23, not June 20th or 21st!
> The morning sunrise actually starts becoming later as early as June 20th, but the sunset time does not reach its latest value until June 22nd, where it remains all the way through July 3rd!
> You still have six more days to enjoy the latest sunset of the year, namely 8:46 PM EDT. Then on July 4th, the sun will set 1 minute earlier and continue that trend until mid-December.
The table below illustrates these interesting facts (for Blacksburg VA - just minor variations would be noted for other cities in our region):

Nutritious food for kids this summer
During the school year, our students receive healthy meals, but many go without during the summer. That’s where Feeding Southwest Virginia comes in!
Botetourt County Libraries approached the Botetourt Resource Center, with a partnership opportunity through Feeding Southwest Virginia's Summer Food Service Program, to ensure that children have access to nutritious meals during the summer months. The Botetourt Resource Center serves as the primary partner and storage/distribution center, and Library staff provide onsite assistance on meal distribution days. During their first visit to the Center, parents/guardians must fill out a short enrollment form to order meal boxes.
"It's not unusual to see hungry kids at the library," noted Cheryl Wagner, Buchanan Library Branch Manager. "We don't have the resources ourselves to feed all those kids, or the space to store meals. But we know that kids can't continue to read and learn this summer if they're too hungry to think. We're so grateful to the Botetourt Resource Center for jumping at the opportunity and taking on this project with us."
Children aged 1-18 can receive free meals and snacks through this program. When families pick up meals, library staff will also offer educational activities that kids can take home, allowing kids to nourish both their bodies and minds!
Upcoming food distribution dates are:
• Monday, July 1, 4pm-5pm
• Monday, July 15, 5pm-6pm
• Monday, July 29, 5pm-6pm
Food distribution will take place at the Botetourt Resource Center located at 33 Bedford St, Buchanan, VA 24066.

A motorcycle traveling on the Blue Ridge Parkway went over a low stonewall at 101 MM and dropped down from the road about 100 feet this afternoon. Botetourt Fire and EMS responded and the Lifeguard helicopter transported the victim to the hospital. Thanks to one of our estute readers for the video and notification.

Have you heard the church bells on New Year's Eve? Heard and seen the shotgun start to the New Year ? Come to Fincastle and ring in the New Year on Main at the Courthouse! 11:30 is a good time to arrive. Spend a few minutes socializing. (With construction about to begin on the Courthouse project, don't know how this will effect the future of the tradition next year.)
