Ahoy Ahoy Razorcake Friends - SATURDAY! - We are back at Footsies for another year of drinking beer and listening to records.

Our DJs this month include old vets to our event, Juan 38 and JoeDana, but we also have new friend to the party, Sharon Like, who you may know from No More Heroes on KXLU FM.

All that and we will have the latest issue of Razorcake and the buy-a-shirt-n-get-a-beer special. C’mon! Let’s Go!

In this edition of my Razorcake podcast I present you with songs I’ve been listening to from the latter half of 2023. Some of these songs are on albums that came out this year and other tracks are tunes that got stuck in my head. Some mornings I wake up and it’s a Slayer song or Jawbreaker. Most of the time, unfortunately, it’s Christian punk or metal from my teenage years. I won’t subject you all to that, though. You’re welcome.

Just posted! New TTPBTDBs!

We’re not naïve. We know that part of the aging process is having to say good-bye. Say good-bye to our youth, to our past, and unfortunately to people. Some tragically taken before their time, others graced with the privilege of a natural death. And so we find ways to cope, we develop mechanisms that guide us through the shock, anger, sadness, and into acceptance. 2024 won’t be different, but neither will 2025, so we might as well buckle up and protect ourselves from the impact. In this pod we look back at those who passed this last year. Both friends and strangers alike. It’s the least we could do. Preserve the mark they made on this culture.

We obviously couldn’t play a track from everyone, so if there was someone you can think of that you would like to give a shout out to, please feel free to write something in comments. We’re all in this together, and we’re here for each other, because if we’re not, who is?

Thanks for listening and Happy New Year!

Dude’s Trip #3, Superior Camping by Nighthawk
Hi everyone, self-proclaimed punk rock Rick Steves here. You may or may not have read one or both of the first two installments of this column. If so, thank you. If not, let me introduce myself. I am a forty-two-year-old punk rock type who likes to travel and write, among other things. Specifically, I like to go camping. It’s very cheap. Some campsites are only ten dollars! Most punks don’t have a lot of money, for various reasons. I’m no exception. Get a tent (if you wish), some sleeping gear, and you’re on your way. The rest is life as usual: spend when you have to. This ain’t your first checkbook.

If this podcast wasn’t already niche enough, strap in for a very merry holiday horn hootenanny!

The captain of our ship and local grinch Todd took a mulligan on this one, leaving Ethan and Tim to pull the weight in compiling this eclectic and festive flurry of rock, glam, pop, punk, and punk parody tunes. While these may not be the greatest songs ever written (hell, they aren’t even the greatest Christmas songs ever written), we can guarantee they are the best of the best in Christmas songs featuring a horn and that’s what we’re all here for, right?

We have some good news and some bad news… literally… we start things off with Bad News (pause for laughter) but the good news for you internet trolls is that we’ve gifted you this holiday season with the Rocket From The Crypt tune you’ve all been clamoring for since they were first played back in Episode 1. Hopefully that keeps you sated for a while. If only X-Ray Spex and The Saints had done the same, it’d be crickets from the peanut gallery.

We break our self-imposed “no ska will be played” contract and deliver you a twofer from The Meaty, Meaty Beeftones and Mild Manners. When you’re drinking from a well this shallow, some concessions need be made.

After an hour and a half of yuletide punishment, Todd is swept up in Ethan’s unusually positive energy and the spirit of Christmas present. He makes the bold statement that, “Christmas songs are no longer just for December and shall be listened to year-round!” Ethan then comes to from his eggnog blackout and realizes it was all just a dream, but they’ve both learned much from this journey and are forever changed.

My name is Lorde. I’m an online s*x worker. Lorde Destroyer is my stage name. Lorde comes from feminist and civil rights activist, Audre Lorde, and a client christened me Lorde Destroyer because I destroy egos, paradigms, and old identities. Psychological devastation—or as some like to call it, mindf**k—is my niche.

Greetings!

Please enjoy this audio recording of a chat with Daryl. We taped a couple live songs—fair warning: I blew out the set-up by roasting my guitar in a hot car all day beforehand (ewps), but Daryl did a great job tracking! Got to share a few recent favorite songs and complain a little about work and consumer holidays.

Hope you enjoy it!

Thanks to Daryl and Razorcake for having me!

I’ve frequently been sent a meme stating that hardcore has ruined me for shows: “I spend twelve dollars and I feel entitled to do karate, sing one of the songs myself, and jump from the highest point of the venue consequence-free.” By that metric Daikaiju is the most hardcore band around and has ruined me for shows.

Lack of Solidarity by Yann Bourdeau
In Montréal, there are more and more unhoused people. I don’t judge unhoused people, who are often drugs addicts or alcoholics. Being a drug addict is punk and being straightedge is punk. You choose your own path. I have found my personal way to try to help them.

AHOY AHOY RAZORCAKE LOVERS! SATURDAY December 12 is our last little happy hour party of the year and we decided to make it a bit extra special!

Now of course we will have wonderful ambiance of Footsies, the latest issue of Razorcake magazine, and the fantastic sounds of our vinyl-only DJs: DJ Liuba, The ToddBall, and new to our soiree: DJ Auntiecapital.

But this time we decided to have a holiday cookie party!🍪! We’ll have both vegan and non vegan options of cookies for people to enjoy along with their raucous punk rock and booze. Feel free to bring your own cookies and add to the spread.

All that and JoeDana will be there with the beer/t-shirt special that could be the most fun way to finish off your holiday shopping. Don’t miss it!

Trace the wild adventures of two childhood pals (Bill and Booth) who decide to shove their dead-end jobs and become punk rock soundbite archivists. They adopt the die hard motto of “We do what we gotta do so we can do what we wanna.” The ambitious duo will encounter every category of movie clip, weird voicemail, and political tirade adorning the songs they love as they make their way up the precarious ladder of fame. Their spirited friendship and hungry dreams keep them in constant trouble until a series of unusual and hilarious occurrences thrust the duo into soundbite fame and fortune.

Listen now at razorcake.org!

Also, it’s that time again, donation drive season! Do your part to keep punk print alive and sponsor a space and/or hook your friends and family up with the best zine out there!

Chris Chappell Photo Column— Fest 21
Heading down to The Fest in Gainesville, Fla. feels like going to summer camp. I see many “camp friends,” folks who I only interact with at The Fest and on the internet. The weekend is a welcome escape from the trials and tribulations of daily life in our capitalist society. But this year, between the hugs and high fives, something hung over this year's Fest.
