En éste, su quinceavo número, Psychoanalysis.today interroga los vínculos existentes entre lenguaje e inconsciente. El lenguaje permite al ser humano expresar su pensamiento y comunicarse por medio de un sistema de signos convencionales que conforman una lengua. Lengua materna, lenguas extranjeras que cuestionan el formato mismo de esta revista de psicoanálisis, publicada en cinco lenguas. La traducción permite el pasaje de una lengua a otra, llamadas lengua fuente o lengua de partida, lengua meta o lengua de llegada. La traducción no siempre llega a reproducir lo que permanece oculto en una lengua ni a transmitir su intensidad. Si esto es así para cada traducción, la de los textos psicoanalíticos tropieza con un obstáculo aún mayor en el encuentro de la materia lingüística con el inconsciente, con la ‘lengua de lo infantil’. Además, ¿lengua de la infancia o lengua de lo infantil? Una lengua nos atraviesa inconscientemente. Y es en la transferencia donde el analista reconoce la fuerza de la lengua, la potencia de la nominación, los fragmentos de la lengua primera, los efectos de desplazamientos…

Y J.-B. Pontalis evoca la profesión de traductor como una profesión ‘también imposible’. ‘Elegir la lengua de partida es, en más o en menos, maltratar la lengua de llegada; preferir ésta, es sacrificar aquella. No habito ni una ni la otra, nos dice el traductor; me encuentro necesariamente entre ambas’ .

La obra de Jean Laplanche nos ofrece un ejemplo. Después de su empresa de traducir la obra freudiana lo más ajustado posible al texto, propone un ‘modelo traductivo’ a partir de su teorización del ‘primado del otro’ en la génesis del inconsciente. El infans busca traducir los mensajes enigmáticos, no necesariamente verbales, provenientes del adulto que se ocupa de él y ‘comprometido’ por lo sexual infantil de este último.

Em sua décima quinta edição, Psychoanalysis .today estuda os laços existentes entre linguagem e inconsciente. A linguagem permite ao ser humano exprimir seu pensamento e se comunicar por meio de um sistema de signos convencionais que constituem uma língua. Língua materna e línguas estrangeiras que questionam o próprio formato desta revista de psicanálise, publicada em cinco idiomas. A tradução permite a passagem de uma língua para outra, que são chamadas língua fonte ou língua de partida e língua alvo ou língua de chegada. Ela nem sempre consegue restituir o que permanece camuflado em uma linguagem e transmitir sua intensidade. Se isso acontece dessa forma em toda tradução, na dos textos psicanalíticos o choque é ainda maior, pelo encontro da matéria linguística com o inconsciente, com a ‘linguagem do infantil’. Aliás, linguagem da infância ou linguagem infantil? Uma língua nos perpassa inconscientemente. E é na transferência que o analista reconhece a força da língua, a potência da nominação, os fragmentos da língua primeira, os efeitos de deslocamentos...

E J.-B. Pontalis fala da profissão de tradutor como um trabalho ‘ainda impossível’. ‘Escolher a língua de partida é, de certa forma, maltratar a língua de chegada; preferir esta, é sacrificar aquela. Não habito nem uma, nem outra, nos diz o tradutor; fico entre as duas necessariamente.

For its fifteenth issue, Psychoanalysis.today examines the links that exist between language and the unconscious. Language allows humans to express their thought and to communicate thanks to a system of conventional signs that make up a language. Mother tongue, foreign languages – the very format of this psychoanalytic journal, published in five languages, poses the question of how they relate. Translation elicits the shift from one language to another, a source or original language and a target or final language. A translation cannot always render what remains hidden in a language or convey its intensity. While this applies to any translation, the translation of psychoanalytic texts further tackles the encounter of the linguistic matter with the unconscious, with the ‘language of the infantile.’ Is it in fact the language of childhood or the language of the infantile? A language runs through us unconsciously. And in the transference, the analyst acknowledges the force of this language, the power of naming, the fragments of the first language, the effects of displacements...

J.-B. Pontalis refers to the translator's job as an ‘ever impossible’ profession. ‘Favoring the original language more or less implies mistreating the final language; preferring the latter implies sacrificing the former. I dwell in neither one nor the other, the translator tells us; I am necessarily between the two’ (2002: 261)

The work of Jean Laplanche illustrates this. Following his project to translate the Freudian corpus as close to the text as possible, he set forth a ‘translational model’ on the basis of his theorization of the ‘primacy of the other’ in the genesis of the unconscious. The infans strives to translate the – non necessarily verbal – enigmatic messages coming for the adult who looks after him/her, messages ‘compromised’ by the infantile sexual of the adult.

The Body of Odysseus, No-Body’s Body

From a theoretic-clinical point of view, psychoanalysis disposes of interesting models to think the body: hysterical conversion, models referring to psychosomatic pathologies, as well as the recent theorizations of A. Lemma. However, when working with subjects whose corporeal problematics are at the fore, the body of Odysseus has time and again worked for us as a metaphor to illustrate the manner in which identity seeking is expressed through the subject’s relation to its own body.

Desde el punto de vista teórico-clínico, el psicoanálisis dispone de modelos para pensar el cuerpo: la conversión histérica, los referidos a las patologías psicosomáticas, así como las recientes teorizaciones de A. Lemma. Ahora bien, al trabajar con sujetos cuyas problemáticas del cuerpo ocupan el primer plano, el cuerpo de Ulises nos es útil como metáfora para ilustrar la manera en que el periplo identitario se expresa en la relación del sujeto con su cuerpo.

O corpo de Ulisses – Corpo de ‘persona’

De um ponto de vista teórico-clínico, a psicanálise dispões de modelos para pensar o corpo: a conversão histérica. Eles se referem às patologias psicossomáticas bem como as teorizações interessantes de A. Lemma. Ora, trabalhando com sujeitos cujas problemáticas do corpo estão em primeiro plano, o corpo de Ulisses serviu com frequência como metáfora, para ilustrarmos a maneira pela qual o périplo identitário se exprime na relação do sujeito com seu corpo.

D’un point de vue théorico-clinique, la psychanalyse dispose de modèles pour penser le corps : la conversion hystérique, ceux se référant aux pathologies psychosomatiques ainsi que les théorisations intéressantes d’A. Lemma. Or, en travaillant avec des sujets dont les problématiques du corps sont au premier plan, le corps d’Ulysse nous a souvent servi comme métaphore pour illustrer la manière dont le périple identitaire s’exprime dans le rapport du sujet à son corps.

Issue 14: Psychoanalysis and racism in Brazil

For our issue on ‘Racism, Class, Caste, Faith’, Psychoanalysis.today editor Marina Kon Bilenky talks to Wania Maria Coelho Ferreira Cidade, former President of the Brazilian Society of Psychoanalysis of Rio de Janeiro and current Director of Community and Culture of the Brazilian Federation of Psychoanalysis (FEBRAPSI), on the lack of racial diversity in Brazilian psychoanalysis (both analysts and patients), and how this reflects widespread structural racism in the country as a whole.
