Saturday Night New Orleans Radio 1950s-70s collector's music on Sat midnight radio. 90.7fm or wwoz.org Streaming at: https://exchange.prx.org/series/31889-saturday-night-new-orleans-radio

Music from that time when rhythm and blues and rock and roll were emerging but hadn't yet become a predictable formula. A time when musicians were listening to and incorporating these music's exciting emergence into their own style of music. We focus on music that is difficult to categorize. C&W that sounds like rockabilly and rockabilly that sounds like R&B which sounds an awful lot like rock. Th

at's the sweet spot for the music on the show and, sure enough, that's where the New Orleans sound is centered. Songs are arranged in sets originating from an overall theme and between songs are short interstitial sound clips that sometimes tell a parallel story or a contrasting story or are simply audio cultural artifacts used that frame the music. Presented like the radio shows of the times, nothing staid or overly serious. This is "music you've never heard by musicians you've never heard of" without the culture vulture perspective or the competitive provenance contests of music collectors.

I'll get last weekend's show posted in a few days.

At the beginning of rock and roll a fad was to add a couple gong strokes and play the black keys on a piano to imitate what Americans thought was a "Chinese sound." Of course, China with the world's largest population might probably didn't have as many rock and roll bands as any typical American hig...

240804 show is baking in the "august" convection oven. First hour, songs with crying or laughter (or both) in the lyrics. There aren't many of them because it's hard to cry or laugh in tune and you can bet my songs are not in tune. Playlist below.

240728 show? It found me. One song where musicians used animal noises to make the melody lead to another and soon enough I have four shows worth of songs where musicians were using sound effects as music (and that's after excluding songs with car engines, train sounds, guns, chickens, etc.) It'll be fun.

The great missing chapter in the history of rock and roll would be titled "Indo Rock" and would feature The Tielman Brothers. This chapter could completely negate the chapter on the highly dilutive version of the Tielmans, Elvis Presley.

240606 (Tonight!) I'm doing the Thursday 7pm to 10pm show.

Two hours after I posted this ... I drop my hardrive of music and fatally broke it. I've got a backup but it takes at least a day to get the computer to recognize all the songs so there I am, naked in front of my homeroom class, expected to give a book report.

I'm at the studio, trying to ride this recycled show from 2019 that features songs sung by the casts from McCales Navy and Ginger, Mary Ann, and Lovie Howell. You know, the usual dreck from my usual wreck of a show. We're posting here. Kinda. I think I'll go get a bunch of drinks.

We're posting here for the 240602 show at midnight on 90.7fm in soggy-town and WWOZ.org if you're uphill. Tonight, primitive songs and too many songs about "wild" women and men. Playlist and photos of some of the musicians:

Below is how the live show unfolded with all my usual urrrpss, schzenits, and zurps:

240526 show features The White Label record company of Cees ("Casey") Klopp a record collecting Dutchman who fell so deep into The Music he bootlegged and released hundreds of "White Label" and "Collector" compilation albums. "Bootlegger" and "curator of lost songs;" Cees had a great ear and the diligence to put this music back into ears that would never have found it without Cees' bootlegging.

The live show starts at midnight on WWOZ.org or 90.7fm. Tonight (as in every show) we explore the post WWII emergence of rock and roll as the definitive end of musical orthodoxy and syrupy pop songs.

This week, a different take on our theme. Surely Spike Jones did more to murder musical orthodoxy and syrupy pop in the 1940s and long before rock and roll became "a thing." Seeing a single Spike Jones performance is enough inspiration to bury even the most ingrained orthodoxy and find a do-it-yourself rock and roll sensibility. Only three songs by Spike Jones but do yourself a favor and watch this documentary about him:
