Beat Roots is an up and coming music based radio show created and hosted by Ned Helyar and Benjy Barnett. Originally from URF at the University of Sussex, Beat Roots has now also taken up a fortnightly slot on 1BrightonFM with the intention of providing a truly global music flavour. Since the age of two, Ned has lived in various countries across Africa and has had constant exposure to a variety of
different arts and cultures. Throughout that time, he has been lucky enough to work with and meet a great mix of artists and musicians who have helped to both inspire and develop his understanding and love of music. Now based in Brighton, his aim is to bring this collective experience together and help fuel the Beat Roots fire. Initially trained in Viola and Percussion, Benjy first discovered music within a classical environment. More recently, with a passion for sound system culture and bass music, he has delved deep into the UK's Dub scene and become somewhat of a specialist, whilst having also used his classical tuition to hone his ear towards finding fine tunes of any genre. Every episode Ned and Benjy will zone in on a new geographical location, exploring the hidden musical gems that each particular area has both spawned and inspired. Both hosts bring their own selection of songs and artists to the table along with lesser known facts about the artists' backgrounds and their origins. Prepare for a journey through time with a vast array of enticing and exciting genres; each week, a new location.
