Our special theme for this edition is witchcraft: from the history of witches and witch trials, to medicine women, mystics and herbalists, spells and enchantments, shapeshifters and familiars, covens, hags, crones and sabbats. We welcome writing on witchcraft as the old religion, remembered or imagined, and the depiction of witches in fairytale, folklore, literature and film (both good and bad) across cultures.

"Sarah Nicholson, the South Coast Writers Centre director, publishes Heroines and says it is writing about women, by women.

"When you give them the opportunity, women writers tend to grapple with deep questions of our humanity that we don't talk about very much," Dr Nicholson says."

The director of a writers' festival in Australia says it's time women stopped apologising for being writers — and she suggests writing in your car if that's the only time you have.

Happy 84th birthday to esteemed Canadian novelist and poet Margaret Atwood! She is pictured here attempting to burn an 'unburnable' copy of her novel "The Handmaid's Tale" with a flamethrower. A single unburnable copy was created last year to raise awareness about increasing censorship; her dystopian science fiction novel, which centers around one woman's quest for freedom in a totalitarian theocracy where women's rights are completely suppressed, has been the subject of numerous censorship challenges since its publication in 1985. The unburnable copy was auctioned off after Atwood's flamethrowing attempt, raising $130,000 for PEN America, a literary and free expression advocacy organization. As Atwood famously asserted in her poem "Spelling": "A word after a word after a word is power."

Born in Ottawa, Ontario in 1939, Atwood is the author of 15 books of poetry and numerous novels, including Cat's Eye, The Robber Bride, The Edible Woman, and Oryx and Crake. She won the Booker Prize -- which honors the best original novel published that year -- for "The Blind Assassin" in 2000 and has been shortlisted several additional times. She has also won two Governor General's Award, Canada's highest literary honor. This year, the American Academy of Arts and Letters elected Atwood as a Foreign Honorary Member of the Academy.

It was around this time a fortnight ago that I arrived at the venue to perform a couple of my poems and to speak as part of my very first Q&A panel with The Heroines Festival at the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival. I was so worried that I'd seize up and not know what to say in answer to the questions. But I surprised myself by actually having a lot to say! 😅

One of the questions posed was 'if the male journey through history as told through tales and mythology is characterised by strength and heroism, what characterises the female's story?'. 🤔

I answered to the effect of how the woman's journey was also one of strength, but not of the brute force variety; hers was a quiet strength, her story characterised by resilience and survival in the face of surrounding brutality. Then I launched into a diatribe about how things haven't changed much for women to this day. /rant 🙊
